1 VIKING NEWSLETTER January/February, 2016 Dear MMS Families Over the last year, the Edmonds School District has been researching and discussing a topic I know most of us wish we did not have to explore. Yet, we must prepare for the possible reality of a violent intruder entering one of our District schools or buildings. With the safety of everyone on our campus at the forefront, a necessary change in our practices Districtwide is being made and I ask you to carefully review the information about this change. In order to be better prepared should such a tragic event occur, we have adopted a new drill using the A.L.I.C.E. protocol. A.L.I.C.E. stands for: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. The basis of this new response plan is to provide staff and students more options. The five steps of A.L.I.C.E. are not linear and are applied age appropriately. They can be used by staff and students in any order, as the situation develops. The number one goal of A.L.I.C.E. is to keep students and staff safe and away from harm. What the training looks like for our different age groups of students varies greatly. During our Districtwide rollout, myself and all principals were trained first, followed by school staffs and now we are beginning to train our students at each school. At MMS, we are looking at ways to include parents in the trainings through a community meeting on January 21 at 6:00 in the MMS Library as well, so everyone in our school community is vested in this important change. This is the same evening that we will be hosting our Family Literacy Night from 6:30 8:00 PM. Through this change, we are empowering our staff and students with more safety options by ensuring that they are educated and prepared. Past tragedies have demonstrated that simply having students lockdown and attempt to hide is not always the most appropriate response. I appreciate your attention to this information. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have questions. Sincerely, Jennifer Kniseley Principal, Meadowdale Middle School

3 Ms. Jackson, College & Career Readiness Specialist, has started visiting homeroom classes, on Thursdays, for a brief talk with students about college and career training and Washington s College Bound Program. A recent study by Georgetown University indicates that by 2018, 70% of all jobs in Washington will require technical training or a college degree. Below are some notes from those talks for discussion with your child. Paying for College Cost (Examples are estimates for 2015/16 school year): Public 2-year community or technical college. Ex: Edmonds Community College $4,000/year. Does NOT include living expenses. Public 4-year institution. Ex: University of Washington, $27,000/year. Includes dorm housing, food & some personal expenses. Private 4-year institution. Ex: Seattle University, $56,000/year. Includes dorm housing, food & some personal expenses. (Private universities often have more financial aid available to offer their students than public schools, so don t let the sticker price automatically scare you off. The overall financial aid packages may work out to be about equal.) Ways to Pay: Scholarships & Grants do not have to be repaid. That means free $$ for college! Scholarships are typically based on academic performance, athletic ability, religious affiliation, race or a number of other factors. Grants are based on merit, on need, or are student-specific. Most commonly offered by federal and state government. Also offered by institutions, such as the school you wish to attend, and private organizations, such as Costco or The Gates Foundation. Loans are available from the federal government as well as from private banks, however students should pursue all other op - tions for federal student aid before entering into a private loan. Work Study is a program that provides jobs on campus, or nearby, for students to earn money to help cover costs. Work study may be part of a student s overall financial aid package. Earning college credit in high school is another way to decrease the cost of college. What can I do NOW, as a middle school student, to help cover my future costs for college? Find out if you are eligible, based on family income, to sign up for Washington s College Bound Scholarship. Washington is one of only three states to offer this kind of early commitment to financial aid for college an excellent way to get tuition fully or partially covered. Act now because you must apply in 7 th or 8 th grade. You cannot sign up in high school. Use your chrome-book to show your parent the website Follow the $ for College tab to see the income requirements for College Bound. Develop good work habits to earn solid grades. If you re not sure where to begin ask for help. Don t let frustration or fear keep you from getting support. Teachers and staff are here to assist you! Begin talking with your family about what kind of post-secondary training might be right for you. Think about it 2-year degree, technical or certificate program, 4-year degree, apprenticeship.. How do I sign up for the College Bound Program? Pick up an application in your preferred language from the Counseling Office, or from Ms. Jackson. Return your completed application to Ms. Jackson or to the office. You may choose to complete the application online in which case you will be required to complete a signature sheet. That signature sheet must be returned or your application will be considered incomplete. Ms. Jackson, Ms. Cole and Ms. Hyde can help you to apply online, or you can apply online with your parent/guardian.

4 FAMILY LEARNING OPPORTUNITY LITERACY & SOCIAL STUDIES NIGHT JANUARY 21, 6:30-8:30PM Our English and Social Studies classes are full of engaging activities every day that encourage our students to read, write, listen and speak at high levels. Come learn more about how students are learning in English and Social Studies in the age of technology and how you can support your student at home! The Teen Librarian from Lynnwood Library will be here to give book talks and help students get signed up for library cards. Childcare will be provided, as well as light snacks and beverages. Come engage with other families, students, and staff in a fun night celebrating learning! Please bring your student s Chromebook and login information to the event. In the sessions, you will be using the Chromebook to learn how students are using the technology to work both in and out of class. Your students are also welcome to attend the sessions with you. Happy 2016! Thanks to all the staff, parents, and students who participated, either by shopping or playing, at our annual Barnes and Noble Books and Music event fundraiser. Thank you to Carol Hartman Davis, the Community Relations Manager for Barnes & Noble, who did a wonderful job organizing the event on site and continues to be a big supporter of our library. We enjoyed listening to our 8th Grade Choir, Jazz Band and Orchestra entertain us with wonderful holiday tunes. Thanks to Mr. Laven, Ms. Zickefoose, Mr. Rengsdorf and all the music students for their participation. Thank you also to our volunteer gift wrappers, Juanita Labosier and Phuong Phillips. The gift wrapping donations totaled dollars for our library. It was a fun, festive atmosphere in the Barnes and Noble Café. Thank you to all the parents, students, and teachers who attended the event, made purchases for gifts and donations to the library. This money goes directly toward the purchase of more books and e-books for our library. Thank you for your generosity. Mark Your Calendars.Scholastic Book Fair Monday, March 21 st Friday, March 25 th If you would like to volunteer at the book fair, cashiers are needed, please contact Mrs. Shana Miller, Book Fair Coordinator, at We have morning positions from 7:30-8:00 a.m. and lunch time positions from 11:30-1:00.
