1 College planning starts your Freshman year of High School and continues throughout your high school years. The following timelines can be used as a guide to help you stay on track. SEPTEMBER: Seniors Make decisions regarding post-secondary education. Visit your school guidance counselor to see if you are on track for college. Continue college search and acquire admission applications to selected colleges. Work on college applications and outline essay topics. Organize your calendar with deadlines. Check your transcript for correct credits. Finalize resume. Begin to apply for available scholarships: Have adequate supply of senior photos. Develop and organize a scholarship folder. Apply for ROTC scholarships. Register by mail or online for the ACT, SAT I SAT II: Subject Tests. Contact colleges you hope to attend and arrange on-campus visits. Continue checking your school's scholarship bulletin and apply for scholarships that you are interested in and qualified for. October 1 = Arizona schools early admission deadline. OCTOBER: Apply to schools with early admission application deadlines. Continue the college application process and visit schools. Attend post-secondary school rep meetings at your campus.

2 Attend TUSD College Night at the Tucson Convention Center. Mail ROTC and military academy applications. NOVEMBER: Last chance to register by mail for ACT/SAT I. These test scores are a requirement for most scholarships and 4 year colleges. DECEMBER: Go to for financial aid worksheet to begin preparation for January. Most parents and students will complete online..the easiest way! If you would like to complete it via mail, you will need to request a paper form. Continue to apply for scholarships. JANUARY: Complete FAFSA. Plan to attend Financial Aid Night at a local high school, Pima College, or U of A for assistance in completing the FAFSA. FEBRUARY: Complete the FAFSA by February 14 th to receive your results quickly. First come, first serve with financial aid. You can continue to complete the FAFSA after February 14 th. Scholarships season is now in full effect! Be checking the 2 minutes bulletin for scholarship opportunities. MARCH: Continue to apply for available scholarships. Local and alumni scholarship applications are available at this point. Over $25,000 of scholarships are distributed exclusively to our graduating seniors. Notify your counselor of scholarships or academic awards that you received. APRIL: Complete Senior Survey. Continue to notify counselor of scholarships/academic awards received.

3 MAY: Last chance to notify your counselor of scholarships or outstanding academic awards that you have received. Attend awards night and graduation. Remember to thank scholarship donors, teachers and others who have written letters of recommendations. Request that the high school registrar mail a final copy of your official transcript to the college of your choice. Register for college summer orientation programs Juniors SEPTEMBER: Check with your counselor about credits needed for graduation. Check your schedule to assure you are on track at this time. Take a strong academic prep program. Prepare for the PSAT test. See your counselor about programs to help Organize a calendar with deadlines. Use your planner. Take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational And Battery) OCTOBER: Take the PSAT Test (results in 4-6 weeks.) Top scores qualify for National Merit Scholarships (notification next fall.) Attend post-secondary school representative meetings on your campus. Attend TUSD College Night at the Tucson Convention Center. NOVEMBER: Develop a preliminary college list with parents and counselor. Talk with military, college, and vocational school representatives who visit your school. Visit your schools career center.

4 DECEMBER: If you are taking an Advanced Placement Course, ask about AP exams. Fee Waivers re available. JANUARY: Discuss PSAT scores with counselor, SAT/ACT prep courses. Register to take a SAT or ACT! FEBRUARY: Prepare for SAT I and ACT given this month. Check transcript with counselor and plan senior year. MARCH: Register for your Senior Classes. Check with your counselor to make sure you are on the way to graduation. Register for SAT I and ACT for May or June if you have not already taken it or need to re-take it. Register for AP exams. Write to colleges or other programs for brochures and admission information. APRIL: MAY: Notify your counselor of scholarships/academic awards received. Complete your junior survey prepare a resume, and begin looking for a summer job or volunteer program. SAT, SAT II, and AP Exams given this month. Many colleges have summer school classes or programs you can take. Check them out! Make appointments to visit colleges, universities and tech programs during the summer. Do some volunteer work in field of interest. JUNE: SAT I and II, and ACT given this month. Athletes get cleared by the NCAA by submitting on-line at Sophomores

5 Map out your high school career. Set goals and make an academic plan to get you there. Work hard to get good grades realizing that all 4 years are considered by colleges for acceptance and scholarships. Begin thinking about interests and skills to start identifying possible careers and the education that would be required. Use the AZCIS and CHOICES interest inventories at the Career and College Center. Research colleges and universities to know their acceptance requirements so that you are able to prepare yourself and register for the right classes. Get to know your high school counselor so that you know that you are on the right track. Try to prepare yourself for the expense of college by saving and working summer jobs. Begin to work on a financial plan with your parents. Most colleges require entrance exams like the SAT Reasoning Test and/or the ACT. Begin thinking about these and try to prepare yourself so that you can take them during the second semester of your Junior year. Consider the SAT II subject tests if you are interested in going out of state since some require them. See Mr. Fernandez for more information. Also, remember that the PSAT (which is the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) should be taken in your junior year so that students can be recognized for scholarships and National Merit Program. Sophomores are also welcome to take the PSAT for preparation reasons. Begin developing those very important extracurricular skills, work and volunteer experience. Colleges love students who not only have strong academic backgrounds, but also students who show interest in outside activities. Be a leader in clubs, teams, and committees. Start a resume of your accomplishments and activities. Apply for scholarships, contests and programs for which you are eligible. The best scholarship online resource is where you can find scholarships that reflect your interests and abilities. Through a questionnaire, you will be connected to some scholarships. Don't despair, there are very few for freshmen and sophomores, but there will be many more as you reach your senior year. Keep updating your profile and fill out as many as you want.
