1 Course: Teen Living Teacher: Office: Downstairs Office #300 Room: 605 Apparel Lab: Room 303 Foods Lab: Room 306 Lecture & Lab Course: Monday - Friday Reagan High School Family and Consumer Sciences Department School Year Prerequisites: (8 th Grade Life Skills Preferred, but Not Mandatory) Course Description: This course examines life management skills in the areas of personal and family living; wellness, nutrition, and foods; financial management; living environments; appropriate child development practices; fashion and clothing; and job readiness. Emphasis is placed on students applying these skills during their teen years. Through simulated experiences, they learn to fulfill their responsibilities associated with the work of the family and community. Skills in mathematics, communication, science, technology, and personal and interpersonal relationships are reinforced in this course. FCCLA leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply instructional competencies and workplace readiness skills to authentic experiences. 2 Student Responsibility: Each student is responsible for reading the syllabus and becoming familiar with the policies and schedule. Although every effort will be made to follow this syllabus closely, it is subject to change. WHEN IN DOUBT REFER TO YOUR STUDENT HANDBOOK. You are responsible for any announcements concerning the course which are made during class, whether or not you are in attendance. If you miss class for any reason, you will need to ask a classmate for any notes written/discussed during your absence. It is the student s responsibility to check with me before or after class for any missed work after you have spoken to a classmate. Missed work is placed in the file crates within the folder with your name. I will ask for homework assignments at the beginning of class. Unexcused absences are not tolerated; there is no makeup work for unexcused absences. Excused absences will be assigned one chapter of work that coincides with the material covered the day of the absence; it is expected to be completed by the next day so the student may move forward in the material with the rest of the class. I have an open door policy, but sometimes I may be in a meeting or unavailable. When you need to see me, it is best to set up an appointment to make up work, test, extra help on assignments, or projects. I am always available to help you with work for this course; however I will not DO the work for you. **HOMEWORK is only given when necessary and is expected to be turned in at the beginning of class and completed by ALL students! ** Grading Policy & Scale: Major tests will be administered after the units are completed. Quizzes will be given, both announced and unannounced. Projects and Labs will count as a major test grade. THIS A PROJECT/LAB HEAVY COURSE. Semester Exams will be given from the North Carolina State VoCats Test Banks. This course has very demanding labs and projects, in which it is important that all students be present. In order to lead by example and teach the responsibility of a work ethic that many jobs are requiring today, I have included a work ethic grade to encourage the attendance and participation that is needed for this course. THIS A PROJECT/LAB HEAVY COURSE. Extra credit opportunities are available for Raider Fridays, Dress for Success Days, and Random Acts of Kindness (RAK). ** Tests and quizzes MUST be made up within 3 days of returning to class after an absence. If you are unable to make up your test within this time frame, you will receive a zero.** Course Structure: Binder / Daily Work/Quizzes 25% Labs/ Projects/Tests 50% Participation/Work Ethic 25% A variety of learning styles will be addressed in this class and are reflected in the structure of evaluation for the course. Class time will consist of lecture and class discussion as well as group and individual activities. 2

Be seated and prepared before I begin class. 2. Remain in your seat until the bell rings. 3. Raise your hand and ask permission if you need to leave your seat while the teacher is talking. 4. Keep your hands, feet, and personal comments to yourself. 5. I should not be able to see you chew gum. 6. I should not be able to see or hear your cell phone. 7. Bottled water is the only beverage allowed in the classroom. 8. When in doubt, silence preserves your dignity. 9. Failure to follow instructions and rules will result in a referral. 3
4 Study Skills for Success Often times we do not realize that when we study, we may not be actually studying. Here are easy guidelines to help you not only with this class but your other classes, and college classes as well. Reading Textbooks Step 1: Skim through the chapter, note and write down the headings on paragraphs, bolded key words, first, and last sentences of paragraphs. (Often best done the day before Step 2) Step 2: Read in detail. Write down main points of the paragraphs, examples, and complete a chapter study guide, if provided. Write any questions on the material or theories you do not comprehend or understand. (Remember: There is no such thing as a stupid question!) Step 3: After class discussions and lecture on your own time, create a review sheet you can use to study for quizzes, tests, and exams. Bring Step 1 and Step 2 together along with answered questions. Rewriting your notes helps commit the information to memory. Staying Organized By keeping your notebook organized you can find items quickly and keep up with important instructions and sheets. Use different colored pens to draw your attention to main names, key words, and dates. Use a calendar in which you can write down assignments, reminders on project due dates, and general information. Outside of school add important reminders to your cellphone, especially supplies you need to purchase for projects or appointments. Place important documents such as your syllabi, class calendars, and important course documents at the front. Preferably in plastic protection sheets, this allows you too easily find those documents. 5 FACS Family and Consumer Sciences Teen Living Stuff CTE Career and Technical Education FCCLA Future Career and Community Leaders of America Student run Organization for students who take courses in FACS. Opportunities such as Socials, Competitions, and Volunteer work are possible. NTHS National Technical Honors Society If you are a junior or senior and have an overall 3.0 GPA and a 3.5 in your CTE courses you may apply for membership in NTHS. Dress for Success Passes Once a month there is a day marked on your course calendar for Dress for Success Pass. In this curriculum we will discuss the proper attire for an interview. You may choose to earn bonus points by dressing in attire for an interview. Raider Passes Given on Raider Fridays. Students who choose to wear Raider colors (Black, Teal, and Silver) receive Raider Passes to be used for Bonus Points on Exams/Projects or may be used for Bathroom Passes during Class. RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) Passes Students may earn a RAK Pass given by for choosing to help another out. RAK passes can be redeemed for Food Bucks or may be used for Bathroom Passes during Class. Work Ethic Points -Every day you are in class, you are on the job in Teen Living. Each day you are present you earn a Work Ethic Point. Lab days carry 2 Work Ethic points per day. Remember: Participation grades cannot be made up. What is Work Ethics? A work ethic is defined as a set of values based on hard work and diligence. A good work ethic includes being reliable, having initiative, or pursuing new skills. Employees exhibiting a good work ethic are often noticed and selected for better positions, more responsibility and ultimately promotion. Employees who fail to exhibit a good work ethic may be regarded as failing to provide fair value for the wage the employer is paying them and often are not promoted or placed in positions of greater responsibility. The Teen Living curriculum has very demanding labs, in which it is important that all kitchen members be present. THIS IS A PROJECT/LAB HEAVY COURSE. Remember: Participation and Work Ethic counts as 25% of your grade. Work Ethic points can be lost or not earned. Ways to lose or not earn Work Ethic Points: Being Absent (Participation Grades cannot be made up!) Tardy to class ISS (In School Suspension) OSS (Out of School Suspension) Issued a D-1 by Causing Classroom and Lab disruptions Cell Phone Confiscation Improper Attire for Class or Lab Not following s Expectations 5
6 Career Blogging Throughout the semester we will be blogging about different career options that relate to our curriculum. First we will set up an account for you, so you may post your thoughts and comments about the position. 1. Log on to the computer 2. Open Internet Explorer 3. Type into the address bar. 4.
