1 Student and Parents/Guardian(s), I am extremely excited to have you in class this year. This syllabus will provide basic information that will allow you to be successful. Please read over it carefully and share it with your parents/family. Keep it with you, in your class notebook, for future reference. I want you to be successful! Let s get started quickly, go together. A major key to thriving students is teacher/parent/family/student communication. I want to help all of my students prosper in this class, preparing them for life after high school by encouraging them to strive for excellence. With parental/family help by providing encouragement and support at home, I believe each student can achieve his or her maximum potential. Please feel free to call me at school and leave a message or me at if you or your parents have any questions. My conference period is daily from 9:45 to 10:30 AM; please give 24 hour notice whenever possible. Grades via the internet at: COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to teach more advanced concepts and skills associated with computer programming as prescribed by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills requirements for the Advanced Computer Programming and the AP Computer Science courses. This course prepares the student to take the Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science A exam for 3 hours of college credit. Currently, the AP exam is given in JAVA so that is the computer programming language used to study these advanced topics. Each student will be expected and required to work in class everyday and put in additional outside work, as needed, to stay on the pace required to successfully accomplish all the required material. Students will be expected to pursue much of the basic learning individually through reading, research, and programming at home. Outside lab hours will be available for students that do not have computer access at home. It is imperative that each student establish a workspace early in the semester. AP students are expected to participate in an extracurricular/outside CS activity, such as, UIL CS, or Business Professionals of America (IT categories). This is a weighted two credit course. Computer Programming 1/PreAP CP 1, or teacher approval, are prerequisites. Students are expected to stay on task and work independently in class and at home in this AP course. There is no industry certification associated with this class; however, students are expected to take the AP CS A exam. Elearning online & GoogleDrive In this course students will use an online, student resource, calendar, forum and assignment file upload site delivered through Moodle and a shared Google Drive folder to communicate and transfer resources and assignments. Students are expected to use this site to check agendas and calendar changes. Students will login to the Adv. CP site, using district login standards, at: INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS INFORMATION The course will primarily utilize computer-based and online text materials and development environments. Some curriculum will be available to the students at home through a virtual learning site. Other resources, such as a class set of textbooks, will be provided as needed. The student should have a pen or pencil and notebook paper available every day for class. Lost books or wasted resources (paper) will need to be reimbursed by the student.

2 Notebooks: Keeping an organized notebook is essential to success in Advanced Computer Science. Notebooks may be provided and may be left in the classroom most of the time. The student must retain returned work for study purposes or settling any grading discrepancies. On some occasions you will be allowed to use notebook materials on a quiz. ASSESSMENT / GRADING POLICY Each six weeks will be evaluated as follows: Daily Work. 60% Tests/Projects. 40% According to District Policy, the three six weeks grading periods will be averaged together for 80% of the overall grade with the Semester Exam representing 20% of the overall grade for the semester.

3 CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS Both you and I will abide by these policies as well as those established by the Mansfield ISD school board policies Respect for yourself come to class prepared with your materials and assignments; be dressed and groomed so that it will not be necessary during class. for others classmates are learning and I am directing that learning, so distracting behavior will not be acceptable for your environment no food, drinks, or other pollutants (i.e., perfume, sprays) for property clean up after yourself and be careful with items that are placed in your care Responsibility taking care of assignments and other business at appropriate times Reliability be prepared and on time for class ABSCENCES/TARDIES It is your responsibility to get any information missed if absent or tardy. This includes and is not limited to warm-ups, vocabulary, notes and assignments. If you miss a test or quiz, you will have one week from the date of assessment to make it up; otherwise, the grade will remain a zero, per district policy. LATE WORK All due dates will be given at the start of an assignment/project. Ample time will be given for every assignment/project. Make good use of your time. If extra time is needed it will be handled on a case-by-case basis. There will be a standard deduction of 15% per day for late work; however, this will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. It is important that you communicate any special circumstances regarding absences and late work to me ASAP. TEST RETAKES - Students will be allowed to demonstrate proficiency of learning objectives by means of retest for a maximum of 70% of the original score possible. Please see pages 8-9 of the Student Handbook for all the details that are involved per District Policy. TUTORIALS It is your responsibility to let me know that you are in need of help. It is very important to not fall behind. Tutorial times will be set on an individual basis. Afterschool (2:45-3:45), Monday and Wednesday are currently my standard days; please give 24 hour notice if you plan to come for tutoring or you need to set a special time/day. INTEGRITY I believe that honesty is extremely important. Please, give me no reason to suspect any form of cheating on work that is done in this course. While working with others on homework/projects is allowed & encouraged, I consider copying all or part of any assignment to be cheating both parties to blame, whether the student(s) is/are currently enrolled in this course or not. Consequences include a zero on the assignment, parent contact, and a referral to your assistant principal.

5 1. Students are to be in the room when the bell rings. 2. Sign in at table by the door. This is how attendance is taken. It is your responsibility. 3. Assigned seats students must sit at their assigned computers and are not allowed to use other computers unless specifically directed to by the instructor. 4. Backpacks, purses and other large items must be left on the floor under computer workstation. 5. Cell phones and IPads are not allowed during class unless for designated instructional use per District Policy. 6. Computers are to be left in the same configuration as found. NO CHANGES! Remember these are not your home computers and the district is watching. 7. No outside storage devices are to be used in the computer lab. 8. No food/drink is allowed in the computer lab. 9. Printing Some assignments may be printed to a central network printer. Students should preview work before printing. Any printing of items not pertaining to this class requires specific permission from the instructor. 10. Five minutes before the end of class students are to: Return all materials to the appropriate location. Leave workstation, including chair, area clean and ordered for the next session. Shut down your workstation, if/when directed by teacher.
