1 Ms. Lockhart Phone Number (360) Room 202B ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY SYLLABUS COURSE DESCRIPTION: Builds upon skills learned in Introduction to Photography, includes camera techniques, photo analysis, photocomposition and increasing emphasis on adjustment and improvement of photographs using photo manipulation software. Students are encouraged to develop various forms of composition such as photography for science, art or publication. Some consideration will be given to the history of photography, digital photography, and related procedures. Students spend two - three periods a week in class, which will include lecture, discussion, critique, and hands on experience. Students should expect to spend up to an additional 5-10 hours per week shooting photographs. Photography is a very time-consuming avocation and this class is an advanced class, which will progress at a steady pace. COURSE OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to understand advanced techniques in photography and some special effects. The class will culminate with an exhibit of the students work, which will be on display on campus or in the community. PRE-REQUISITES: An Introduction to Photography course. REQUIRED MATERIALS: All students must be prepared with a spiral notebook, pen, or pencil. Many students find it helpful to have a highlighter. Taking Notes is a course requirement. Notebooks are reviewed every two weeks and a final grade given at the end of the trimester. Although not required a digital SLR or Point and Shoot digital camera helps in this course. Students may also check out a (basic) digital camera. There are a limited number of cameras and are on a first come basis. Parent or guardian signature is mandatory prior to use in class or check out overnight. Cameras must be returned at the end of each class period. If checked out overnight the camera must be returned before the start of classes the next day. This may be done during tutorial. Failure to return the camera by these guidelines will result in removal of checking out privileges. I. COURSE OVERVIEW AND OUTLINE: Understanding Photoshop's Interface And Core Concepts Learn How To Isolate Areas Of Images Use The Most Powerful Color Adjustment Methods Learn The Basics Of Retouching And Digital Painting Use Filters To Rework Images Use And Understand Layers, Photoshop's Core Feature Introduce Layer Styles And Effects

CLASSROOM POLICIES AND RULES Respect and Honesty Respect for Yourself o Respect for Others Respect for School Property Policies: Respect yourself enough to learn all that you can by working hard, maintaining a positive attitude, producing your best work, and having fun. Respect others and their learning process by allowing them a quiet atmosphere and courtesy. Respect yourself and maintain your academic integrity by doing your own work. Cheating will not be tolerated and both parties will receive a zero for the first offense and a failing grade for the semester on a second offense. Respect the equipment, furniture, room, and school. Rules: No food or beverages are allowed in the classroom. Students will remain in assigned seats unless retrieving documents from the printer. No , Chat lines, My Space, Face Book, and games. Computers are for educational purposes. Electronic devices such as CD players and I-pods with headsets are not allowed in the computer lab. No music and/or DVD viewing on the computers. All cell phones must be turned off during class time. Any cell phone in use during class period will be taken from the student for the duration of the class period (for first offense). Additional reminders about cell phone use will have additional consequences. In addition, students will observe all school policies for South Kitsap High School. III. HALL PASSES Students must have a planner with the preprinted passes in it. During instruction or class lectures passes will not be signed. Students must let me know if it is an emergency. A hall pass will be given at the discretion of the teacher and will not be allowed during the first or last fifteen (15) minutes of the class period. Any personal needs should be taken care of during your passing time. Passes should not become a distraction to the learning environment. IV. LEARNING GOALS: Students will be able to: Demonstrate communication skills through the use of appropriate tools and formats for expression and/or transferring of information or ideas

3 Show editing and proofreading skills by submitting error free documents. Demonstrate proficiency by generating completed projects Students will be able to open, modify, create, and edit using Photoshop. Demonstrate proper techniques for accessing visual files, to scan pictures with a scanner, and to save them in the appropriate format (GIF, JPG, and BMP) Complete a project in which they: o Apply skills of each component learned. o Complete research on a subject of personal interest o Demonstrate effective communication skills V. LEADERSHIP: LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES Organize activities and duties using time management. Identify and follow rules and policies. Participate in leadership activities. Demonstrate the ability to work as an individual or as a member of a group. Leadership is an integral and state mandated portion of all Career and Technical Education Classes. Earning these points will be explained in a separate handout. This is a way for students to become involved in their class, their school, and their community. Leadership projects can be turned in at any time. There are two due dates for Leadership points 40 points due at Midterm and 60 points one week before the end of the trimester. If you miss the midterm due date you can still complete the required 100 points later in the trimester but those points will be applied to your grade at the end of the trimester. Leadership Points are NOT accepted after the due date(s). You will also receive a CTE Professional Leadership Development Checklist to use during the semester to gain a maximum of 100 Leadership points. The sheet you receive is only a guideline. VI. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES AND UNITS OF STUDY: Methods and activities for instruction include lecture, discussion, demonstration, small group/cooperative learning, peer teaching, and assessment, and project based learning. All assignments are provided to students and are located within Ms. Lockhart s Instruction folder. Make sure you read each and every part of the assignment to ensure you get the full benefit of learning this subject matter. The following is an example of the course work and planned projects: VII. GRADING CATEGORIES: Students self-evaluate all assignments each student completes a rubric, which shows this assessment each student then attaches the file with their completed assignment to this rubric prints it and turns it in. Students may any work to the address above. Late work will result in a loss of 5 points from the total points for the assignment. Please discuss due dates with

4 me before the due date if you think you can t finish let me know before the due date. I am glad to help as much as possible. Grades will be updated once per week and available seven academic days after completion of the assignment (excluding weekends). This is for work completed and turned in on the due date. For example if a project were due on Wednesday that assignment would be in Skyward on the seventh school day following the assignment due date. Skyward will also provide a comment for missing or turned in for your reference. Should a student fall behind in class work and need to make up work that work may or may not be available within the above period. On time and up to date work will be graded expeditiously and entered in to the electronic grading system. CATEGORY Class Work, Daily Projects & On task Project Work, Technique and use of software CLASSIFICATIONS PERCENT OF GRADE Daily 70 % Unit and Final Project Comprehensive Projects 30 % VIII. DISCIPLINE / CLASS BEHAVIOR / MAKE UP WORK The focus of this class is to learn the proper use of Photoshop. Students will practice and learn each day of class. Staying focused on your work and trying to complete each project is the way to earn the complete amount of points. All students are expected to have excellent attendance, work habits, and behavior. As an incentive to maintain this conduct, students will receive 10 Leadership Points per week. Active participation in class answering questions, asking questions, providing input and being an active learner earn you the total amount of points each week. You will not receive all of your points if you participate in any of the following infractions: 1. Absence excused* 5. Disturbing others 9.Talking or distracting noises 2. Absence unexcused 6. Off task 10. Out of Seat (w/o permission) 3. Tardy (excused see *) 7. Cheating 11. Food/drink 4. No class materials 8. Misuse of equipment 12. Poor attitude *points added when excused absence or excused tardy is made up with out-of-class time. IX. SUCCESSFUL WORK HABITS 1. Bring all materials to class and arrive on time to be in your seat when the bell rings. 2. Be ready to read the class instruction folder during the first 5 minutes of class each day. 3. To get full credit for assignments: Assignments must be labeled correctly (name, date, period, page assigned) Must be turned in on time.

5 Late work will be accepted but 5 points will be deducted off the total points. I do not accept Leadership Points late. 4. Please seek and/or ask meanings to words or concepts you don t understand. X. COLLEGE DUAL CREDIT This course is College Tech Prep approved and articulated with Olympic College. Students who demonstrate proficiency of the college course competencies with a B (3.0) or better grade may earn college credit through the College Tech Prep registration process. See teacher for college registration information and requirements. XI. EXTRA HELP I am more than willing to provide help during tutorial and after school; most days directly after school. You must sign up for the time you will be staying after school. 6 INTERNET USE ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR Use of the internet provides great educational benefits to students. Unfortunately, however, some material accessible via the internet may contain items that are illegal, defamatory, or potentially offensive to some people. Access to the internet is given as a privilege to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. We require that students and parents or guardians read, accept, and sign the following rules for acceptable on-line behavior. 1. Students are responsible for good behavior on the Internet just as they are in school. General school rules for behavior and communications apply. 2. Network storage areas may be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system integrity and ensure that users are using the system responsibly. Users should not expect that files will always be private. 3. The following are not permitted: Sending or receiving ; sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures; chat rooms (such as My Space) are off limits; printing inappropriate material not related to a school assignment Using obscene language; listening to music and/or watching videos Harassing, insulting, or attacking others Damaging computers, computer systems, or computer networks Violating copyright laws; downloading files Using another s password Trespassing in another s folders, work, or files; trespassing in system folders and files Intentionally wasting limited resources, including through the use of chain letters and messages broadcasted to mailing lists or individuals Employing the network for commercial purposes Revealing the personal address or phone number of yourself or any other person without permission from your instructor 4.
