I m very excited to work with each and every one of my students this year. This class will be a challenge and to be successful in this course, students will be required to maintain a high level of participation in classroom activities and to keep up with readings and assignments outside of class. As high school students, it is my expectation that students will take great responsibility over their own learning. It is my hope that from this challenge, we will collectively grow as learners and as thinkers. Course Info: The Ancient World History course provides a way to understand history and a foundation from which to view the complexities of today s world. Its emphasis on encounters and interactions provides a framework that is especially important. The course, which adopts the periodization approach to analyzing global events and interactions from the origins of man to the French Revolution, is designed to challenge students to create independent ideas by maintaining a student-centered classroom environment. One goal for the course is to provide an engaging and rigorous curriculum that motivates students. The long-term objective is for students to demonstrate an understanding of how the big picture of world history assists in understanding the complexities of today s world. As students, you will improve your analytical abilities and critical thinking skills in order to understand historical and geographical context, make comparisons

2 across cultures, analyze documents and other primary sources, and recognize and discuss different interpretations and historical frameworks. The course imposes a heavy reading and writing load throughout the year, and the demands on students are purposely rigorous in order to adequately prepare students for World History II. Course Text: The course content will integrate primary source documents, secondary source readings, and other material beyond the course text, World History: Ancient Times from Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, which is merely a point of departure for our studies. Materials: Composition notebook (to be stored in the classroom) Pencil or pen (blue or black ink only) Colored pencils 3-ring binder as required by MTHS Units of Study: Unit DC-CAS Standards Islam Ancient Asia Ancient Africa Medieval Europe Mesoamerica Renaissance Reformation British Imperialism Growth of China/Japan India Scientific Revolution Enlightenment Age of Revolutions Expectations: Rules: Our classroom will subscribe to the McKinley Essential Five: 1) Be in uniform, 2) Be on time, 3) Be responsible, 4) Be respectful, and 5) Be active and participate. To this list, our classroom will add the rule, Learn History. This is the fundamental objective of our class and all behaviors, activities, or actions that do not further that goal, such as off-task behavior or disruptions, will not be tolerated. Attendance: This course will move at a rapid pace and it is, therefore, imperative that students come to class every day, barring an emergency or if

3 the student is sick. It is the student s responsibility to catch up on the missed instruction and make up any missing assignments. If a student misses class one day, they must come and get their makeup work the first day they return to school, even if they are not scheduled to attend World History that day. Students can pick up handouts and assignments in the designated make-up work box. Students who need to make up a quiz or test after an excused absence must make an appointment to stay after school with Ms. Kilbourn to do so. Recommendations: Homework: Students will be given homework regularly. Even if no written work is expected of the student, it is recommended that he/she be actively reading the textbook or relevant notes. It is expected that students have read the applicable section and/or chapter at the beginning of each class session and work will be assigned with this prior knowledge in mind. It is in the students best interest to read the appropriate chapter sections each night in order to come to class prepared. Students should not be surprised by a pop quiz or journal entry related to the readings. Homework should be completed prior to entering the classroom. Any student who is found to be completing homework in class on the day that it is due will not receive credit. No exceptions! Parental Role: Parents are the experts at knowing their children please provide me with any information that you think will help your child learn. Parents can help their children understand concepts by speaking with them about current events, and having conversations about how historical content relates to the modern-day. As history and social science is essential to all of our lives, this course is important to the success of every student at McKinley Technology High School. Grading Policy: Homework 10% Class work 40% Assessment 30% Project/Advisory Exam 20% Total: 100% General Classroom Policies and Routines:

4 Late Work: As per the policy of the 9 th grade team, NO late work is accepted. Students who are absent and the absence is excused will take responsibility for turning in any missing assignments by the class period following their return. Honor Code: I take McKinley s honor code very seriously. We will review the code and its implications in class. In-class composition book: Students are expected to enter the classroom each day and immediately retrieve their composition books. Lessons routinely ask students to answer review, introductory, and closing questions, which they will answer in the composition books. Failure to complete any of the comp book requirements will negatively impact a students class work/participation grade. Quizzes, Unit Tests & Exams: Quizzes will be used to formally assess your mastery of concepts on a weekly basis. Tests and exams will address whole units and big ideas. Make-up assessments are addressed on a case-by-case basis for excused absences ONLY. Excuse notices must be provided upon your 1 st return to class. In addition, the teacher will modify all make-up tests and quizzes at her discretion First/Last 15 minutes of class: As per MTHS s rules, no student will leave the classroom during the first and last 15 minutes of the class period. Entering: Students will enter the classroom quietly and place personal items under their seat. Place only necessary materials (notebook, pens/pencils) on the desk. Students will pick up their comp book and all handouts they will need for the day at the designated area, turn in any homework in their inbox, and promptly begin the warm-up. Remember to copy the Do-Now question and the date on the next available page of your Comp Book. The classroom should be silent during this time so your teacher can take care of administrative duties, namely attendance. Do-Now: At the beginning of every class, a 5-minute warm-up activity, a Do-Now, will be posted on the board. This will be a short review of the previous lesson and/or a connection to today s lesson. There should not be any talking during this time. Tardiness: Each minute spent away from the classroom is a minute where valuable information is lost. Therefore, students should strive not to be late for class. Tardiness for class will affect your grade. If a student is late for class, without disrupting the class itself, the student is to sign the clipboard located at the front of the room so that his/her attendance for the day can be taken. Each time a student is late for class and it is unexcused, one point will be taken off of his/her final classwork/participation grade. For example, if a student is late three times during Advisory I, the highest classwork grade he/she can receive is a 97%. Failure to arrive within the first thirty minutes of class results in an unexcused absence. Exiting: The last 5-10 minutes of class will generally be used to assess students understanding of the day s lesson. This will be done through several

5 methods, predominantly in the form of a Brief Constructed Response (BCR), or exit ticket that must be turned in before students leave the class. Cell phones, ipods, mp3 players, PSPs and other music devices: As per school regulation, cell phones and music devices are not allowed in the building. Any cell phones seen or heard will be reported in the form of a referral to an administrator or the Dean of Students. (See the McKinley Technology High School Student Accountability Policy for a detailed description of consequences) Bathroom: It is the student s responsibility to utilize lavatories between class periods. However, students may leave the room ONLY with the teacher s permission and a Tech pass. Students will indicate their need to use the restroom by silently tapping their head and wait for explicit verbal permission from the teacher. Excessive requests for passes will be reflected in your participation grade and will be communicated to parents. No one is allowed to leave the room while someone else is out or during critical moments of the lesson. Students have 5 minutes to return to the classroom. Get ready and get psyched, we re going to have a great year!

6 World History 1 Syllabus My name is Ms. Kilbourn and I will be teaching your child s World History 1 course at McKinley Tech. I am looking forward to getting to know all of my students as well as their families. I value parent input and inquiry and encourage you to contact me by phone or should you have any questions or concerns at any point during the school year. I am anticipating an exciting year and would like to keep you updated on the progress and direction of our class. On this form, you will find space to list your addresses. If you have access, please write clearly any parent or guardian addresses that you would like updates sent to. It is my goal to send a parent update every two to three weeks, which will include information about the course, assignments, and important dates. I would also like to have any phone numbers where you can be reached, either home, cell phone, or work. Please indicate your preferred method of communication. In addition, I am requesting that parents or guardians, as well as students, sign this form affirming that they have read and understand the World History I course syllabus. I included a space for any additional information you would like to share with me as we begin our school year together. The syllabus includes my expectations for the course and a basic idea of what we will be learning in World History.
