1 1 COURSE EXPECTATIONS AND GUIDELINES COURSE: GRAPHIC DESIGN I Instructor: Mrs. Steinecker is the best way to contact me: Phone number: (708) (ext. 5968) MATERIALS NEEDED: Student Planner Textbook: Textbook and Tutorials will be provided. Pen and Pencil Notebook paper 1 Binder (you will be allowed to leave in class) GRADING PROCEDURE: Grading Scale: Grades will be assigned according to the assignment rubric. All semester grades will be based on the following grading scale: A B C D Grading Process: Academic performance will represent 80% of each semester grade and the final exam for the semester will represent 20% of the semester grade. Quarters will report progress to date, not independent grades. Taking the total points they received for the class and dividing by the total points possible determine a student s grade. What Makes Up the Grade for This Class: NOTE: Your point values will come from the following Weekly Tutorials Classroom participation/ behavior Projects Worksheets, Handouts, and Notes Portfolio -All of your work put together orderly in a binder and it is checked once a week.

2 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class is constructed to teach students the practical application of design theory through a product-oriented environment. Students will take a hands on approach to graphic arts through several different areas. Students will learn how to create good designs using several different software programs. Students will then learn how to produce their design using our printing and production equipment. The goal is for students to learn proper design strategies and techniques by making several hands on projects while utilizing tools of the field and trade. TENATIVE COURSE TOPICS: Design Principles Color Theory Design Process Type/Fonts Layout of Basic Advertising Advanced designing techniques SOFTWARE: Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator QuarkXpress CLASSROOM PROCEDURES: NO FOOD or DRINK: To minimize the chance of accidental spills and/or dirty keyboards, absolutely NO FOOD AND/OR DRINKS are allowed into the computer lab. No food and/or beverages are to be brought into the computer lab/classroom at any time. Students will be asked once to throw away any food and/or beverage which are visible to the instructor. Students will receive a discipline referral in the event food and/or beverages are present in the computer lab. MAKE-UP WORK: If your absence was excused it is your responsibility to check the class website and then see the instructor upon your return to make up your missed work. Attendance is very important. It is the student s responsibility to see the teacher for make-up work. All work missed due to an excused absence must be made up at school (before school, after school, or Resource Room 373) or by arrangements made with the classroom teacher. All unexcused absences will result in a zero. SAVING: You may be denied credit for documents not saved, all student work should be saved to the H: drive SAVE ALL WORK!

3 3 WORK AREA: All students will be responsible for the use and care of their computer workstation. Any problems/damage should be reported to the teacher immediately. Any tampering with the computer or the school network will be subject to severe disciplinary action. Your work area is to be kept neat and clean with no garbage. You will be asked to clean your work area weekly. NOTES: Many times there are quizzes over the notes. Notes may be given to you while you are seated at a computer. Keep all notes and tutorials in your binder. CLASS WORK: Please write in black/blue ink. You will be given a zero on the assignment until it is completed. It is your responsibility to keep track of any worksheets or handouts I give to you, all of them should be placed in your binder. Check the portal often. PROPER HEADING: Every assignment you turn in should have a proper heading on it. When in doubt write a heading on an assignment. One section of the classroom will be used for basic design layout and note taking. The other section of the classroom contains computers where the software portion of our class will take place. Please do not take touch anything on teacher desk. If you need a pen/pencil, please ask.

4 4 PASSES: Leaving the classroom should not become a regular occurrence; passes will be issued accordingly (depending on the frequency, tardies, etc: see sign-in sheet below). SIGN-IN/OUT SHEET: The sign-in sheet is placed on my desk. Make sure you sign-in and out as you come in or leave my classroom. If you come into my classroom late sign in and quietly take your seat do not disrupt my classroom. LATE WORK: Work should be turned in on time. For every day after it is due, the assignment will drop one letter grade. You have five days to turn the assignment in before it becomes a zero. SEATING: Be in your seat with your materials out, when the tardy bell rings. Be in your seat at the end of the class period so that any closure activities can be conducted. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: I take academic dishonesty very seriously. Do not copy others work. Do not let others copy your work. Do not plagiarize. Any acts of academic dishonesty will severely impact your success in this class. Any student caught copying or changing another s student s work will receive a zero on the assignment. RESPECT / TEAMWORK: I consider each one of my classes a team that works together and respects one another. In order for this respect to be present in the classroom I have several guidelines everyone must follow. Do not talk when other students are contributing information to the classroom. If you have an answer to a question, please raise your hand, and wait to be called upon. There is no swearing, negative comments, insults, interruptions or invasions of others personal space. If this takes place the discipline plan for my classroom will be put into action. DISCIPLINE / CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PLAN: SCHOOL DISCIPLINE CODE: In order for your education to have the best possible outcome for you a school discipline code has been created. You are expected to follow the school discipline code at all times and this classroom management plan. Failure to do so will result in you being assigned a consequence that fits the behavior you are exhibiting. The following actions will occur if discipline issues arise: 1. Verbal Warning 2. Detention/ Hours 3. Phone Call Home 4. Referral to Deans
