COURSE DESCRIPTION: WEB DESIGN 1 SYLLABUS This introductory web design course is designed to give students experience working with the elements and principles of design and apply those principles to web page creation. This class develops the fundamentals necessary for successful completion of additional classes in the CTE Business and Marketing program and is the gateway course for the informational technology program major. Class activities are project-based and give students an opportunity to practice art and design fundamentals while learning technical skills including Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) coding and web design software as well as Photoshop. Course content meets the standards set in the district Art Survey curriculum as well as the 10 th grade arts Essential Learning Framework. (Currently this course does not receive Art cross-credit.) Through class activities, students will explore careers, assume leadership roles, and practice skills used in the work place. Students may earn dual credit (high school and college credit) if they pass Web Design 1 with a B (83%) or better grade. II. STUDENT OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, students will have completed the following: Projects Project Objectives GLE Alignment Describe the Internet and its associated key terms Describe the World Wide Web and its associated key terms Identify the types and purposes of Web sites Discuss Web browsers and identify their purpose Chapter 1: Define Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and the Intro to HTML standards used for Web Development Describe the tools used to create HTML documents Discuss the five phases of the Web development life cycle Describe the importance of testing throughout the Web development life cycle Use HTML tags and text to create a Web page Chapter 2: Use a browser to view your Web page Creating and Edit a Web page and improve its appearance by using a Editing a Web background color, centering a heading, and adding a Page horizontal rule Use definition lists to present information on a Web page Chapter 3: Creating a Web Site with Links Chapter 4: Creating Tables in a Web Site Develop a two page Web site that has links from each page to the other Create an link Set target links within a Web page and create a bulleted list to link those targets Create a link to another Web site and use both text and an image as links to each site Create both bordered and borderless tables Use an image in a table Create a four-page Web site that links from each page to another Create a list link on a home page and a menu bar on the other - 1 -

Add links to Web pages. Modify and test Web pages. Create a personal Web site that uses techniques and aspects from all chapters III. Internet Explorer; Chrome Notepad Materials provided by students: Pencils and Pens (Black or Blue) 2 Binder Notebook Paper Flash Drive (USB Drive) IV. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES: Methods and activities for instruction are based on a lab environment setting with a project based learning style which include lecture, demonstration, peer teaching, project based learning, and assessment. V. ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES: Students will be assessed in the following areas: Demonstrate proper file management techniques and computer fundamentals (through hands-on assessment). Demonstrate communication skills through the use of appropriate tools and formats for expression and/or transferring of information or ideas. Demonstrate the elements and principles of design and apply those principles to web page creation. Show editing and proof-reading skills by submitting error-free Web pages. Complete a project in which they: - 2 -

3 o o Apply skills of each component of the Web Design 1 curriculum. Complete research on a subject of personal interest and create a Web site VI. GRADING: Grade Weight Scale: Quizzes, Tests, Projects 50% Daily Classwork 30% Employability/Leadership Skills 20% Class Grading Scale (Percentage): = A = C = A = C = B = C = B = D = B- < 62 = E Employability/Leadership Skills: Organize activities and duties using time management Identify and follow classroom, school, and district rules and policies Participate in leadership activities Demonstrate the ability to work as an individual and as a member of a team VII. CLASSROOM RULES, EMPLOYABILITY/LEADERSHIP SKILLS POLICY, SCHOOL AND DISTRICT POLICIES: To ensure proper work ethic and responsibility, any violation of the following rules and policies will result in progressive disciplinary action. In addition, any violation of the district, school, and classroom rules may include the loss of hall pass privileges, computer privileges, loss of credit for the course, and/or financial restitution. T-Bird Way: Expectations are based on the belief that all students can learn, all students should be responsible for their own behavior and academic performance, and that students, parents, and staff should work together for the success of all. We have four basic expectations we expect all students to abide by: Respect Yourself Respect Others Respect Personal and Public Property Follow Staff Instructions Employability/Leadership/Participation Skills Policy: Students will not receive all of their points if students participate in any of the following infractions: 1. Absence excused* 5. Disturbing others 9. Talking or distracting noises 2. Absence unexcused 6. Off task 10. Out of seat (w/o permission) 3. Tardy excused* 7. Cheating 11. Food/drink 4. No book or class materials 8. Misuse of equipment 12. Poor attitude/disrespectful *Points are added back when excused absence or excused tardy is made up with out-of-class time. Students will also receive a Business Education Professional Leadership Development Checklist to use during the semester to gain Leadership points

CLASSROOM RULES, EMPLOYABILITY/LEADERSHIP SKILLS POLICY, SCHOOL AND DISTRICT POLICIES: To ensure proper work ethic and responsibility, any violation of the following rules and policies will result in progressive disciplinary action. In addition, any violation of the district, school, and classroom rules may include the loss of hall pass privileges, computer privileges, loss of credit for the course, and/or financial restitution. School and District Policies: Students will comply with The Tacoma School District s Internet Code of Conduct Contract. The Internet Code of Conduct Contract must be signed by a parent/guardian, student and on file with the classroom teacher Students will comply with all Mt. Tahoma High School Student/Parent Handbook School Rules and Classroom Expectations Contract at all times Classroom Rules: Students will comply with all Mt. Tahoma High School Student/Parent Handbook School Rules and Classroom Expectations at all times Attend class regularly and be on time and in assigned seat when the tardy bell rings Treat the equipment, yourself, and others with respect No loud or disruptive behavior will be tolerated No food or beverages are allowed in the classroom No hats, headgear and hoods The Internet will be used for academic purposes and classroom assignments only No , chats, blogs, Facebook, online computer games, (Halo, etc.) or similar websites No downloading of any files on the computers No games, music, and/or DVD playing/viewing No display and/or the use of cell phones, electronic devices, including headphones, in the classroom; no charging of any electronic device is allowed in the classroom No personal CD s or DVD s, will be allowed to be used in the business lab; any use of USB/Flash drives (for working on and saving school assignments) is allowed only with your teacher s permission Students will respect network security at all times. Students are allowed in their own classroom folder. No trespassing in another s folders, work, or files. No trespassing in system folders or files. Violations may result in the removal from the class and a subsequent loss of credit. No student will be allowed to use the teacher s computer or telephone at any time Cheating and/or the appearance of cheating will result in no credit for the assignment or test Students are to work on assignments and remain in their assigned seats unless retrieving documents from the printer Students are to work on assignments and remain in their assigned seats until the end-of-class bell rings IX. ASSIGNMENTS & ATTENDANCE: All assignments are expected to be turned in by the due date and on time. Late work may be accepted only at the teacher s discretion (situational). Any assignment that is not turned in on the due date because of an excused absence, the assignment must be turned in within two (2) days upon the student s return back to school in order to receive credit. Any assignment received after the two (2) days upon the student s return back to school, will not be accepted. Students with an unexcused absence will not be allowed to make up the missed assignment. It is the STUDENT S responsibility to check my classroom website or CourseSites to find out what assignments were missed upon returning to class after an excused absence. Students are expected to be on time to class on a daily basis. Students are considered tardy if: They are not in their seat when the tardy bell rings. Arrives unprepared (NO assignment, books, materials, etc.) and needs to go to their locker, etc

5 Students are expected to be in their assigned seats before the tardy bell rings and start the Do Now assignment. If a student arrives late to class they are required to sign the Tardy Log when entering the classroom. Students are allowed only three (3) tardies before a parent/guardian is contacted and they are assigned after-school detention. A detention will be issued for every subsequent tardy. If a staff member delays a student, the student must have that staff member fill out and sign a Designation Hall Pass before they arrive and admitted to class. X. BATHROOM HALL PASSES AND DESTINATION PASSES: No Bathroom Hall Passes or Destination Passes are allowed during the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes of class. Students will be furnished with three (3) pass requests per semester as needed. Therefore, it is expected that students take care of their personal needs during passing time. Passes will be given at the discretion of the teacher and will not be allowed during the first or last ten (10) minutes of the class period. When using a hall pass, the student must fill out the Teacher Hall Pass Log and have the destination and the correct date and time leaving entered before obtaining a signature from the teacher. No pass abuse will be tolerated (long time out of class, multiple pass requests, etc.) and will result in the loss of pass privileges. XI. CLASSROOM WEBSITE: You may access information concerning such things as course syllabus, class schedule, announcements, documents, events, and class assignments by going to my Swift Web Site listed under Mt. Tahoma High School at: XII. SUCCESSFUL WORK HABITS: 1. Bring all materials to class and arrive on time to be in your seat when the bell rings. 2. Be ready to do early work during the first 5 minutes of class each day. 3. Be prepared for class by having all class materials and all homework assignments finished for class discussion. 4. To get full credit for assignments: Assignments must be labeled correctly (name, date, period, page assigned) Must be turned in on time Late work will not be accepted except as outlined above XIII. COLLEGE DUAL CREDIT: Students completing Web Design I with a grade of B (83%) or better may receive college credit. Please see your Career and Technical Education instructor for details. 6 INTERNET CONTRACT ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR Use of the Internet provides great educational benefits to students. Unfortunately, however, some material accessible via the Internet may contain items that are illegal, defamatory, or potentially offensive to some people. Access to the Internet is given as a privilege to students who agree to act in a considerate and responsible manner. We require that students and parents or guardians read, accept, and sign the following rules for acceptable on-line behavior. 1. Students are responsible for good behavior on the Internet just as they are in school. General school rules for behavior and communications apply. 2. Network storage areas may be treated like school lockers. Network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system integrity and ensure that users are using the system responsibly. Users should not expect that files will always be private. 3. The following are not permitted: a. Sending or receiving ; sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures; chat rooms (such as Facebook, YouTube, etc.) are off limits; printing inappropriate material not related to a school assignment b. Using obscene language; listening to music and/or watching videos c. Harassing, insulting, or attacking others d. Damaging computers, computer systems, or computer networks e. Violating copyright laws; downloading files f. Using another s password g. Trespassing in another s folders, work, or files; trespassing in system folders and files h. Intentionally wasting limited resources, including through the use of chain letters and messages broadcasted to mailing lists or individuals i. Employing the network for commercial purposes j. Revealing the personal address or phone number of yourself or any other person without permission from your instructor 4. Violations may result in a loss of access as well as other disciplinary or legal action
