1 Sierra Vista High School Home of the Mountain Lions Course Expectations Animation I Instructor: Mr. Parks SVHS Room 317 Phone: (702) parksas@interact.ccsd.net Course Scope: This one-year course provides students with the basic principles of traditional and digital animation. Animation, storyboarding, character creation, and storytelling through animation are the focus of this course. Project-based learning provides students with career-based animation skills. Instructional practice incorporates integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to our society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course will fulfill one of the elective credits required for high school graduation. Course Goals: 1. To apply concepts and vocabulary specific to the animation field. [NS: IT 3.4, 3.6, 8.3] 2. To debate the issues related to the invasion of privacy, copyright, data security, and the ethical use of information. [NS: IT 3.9, 8.6] 3. To explore the history and genre of animation. [NS: IT ] 4. To develop skills in storyboarding. [NS: IT ] 5. To construct characters, backgrounds, soundtracks, and timings for animation sequences. [NS: IT 1.3, ] 6. 2 7. To assemble a final product using appropriate medium. [NS: IT , 3.9] 8. To develop employability skills for workplace readiness, career development, and job retention within the animation field. [NS: IT ] Textbooks The following text(s) will be utilized in this course: 1. Students will not be assigned a textbook. 2. Various books may be used to supplement the curriculum. 3. Under certain circumstances a book may be checked out to a student, if the book becomes lost, stolen, or damaged the student will be charged for replacement. Student Supplies Students are expected to have and maintain the following supplies all year: Pen & Pencil. A 2MB or higher flash drive. Tardy Policy Tardiness is a serious disruption to the educational program. Every student is required to be in his/her seat when the tardy bell rings. With that in mind, Sierra Vista s Tardy policy will be strictly enforced. On the first tardy, the student will be warned; on the second tardy, the parent will be contacted; on the third and all subsequent tardies, the student will be sent to the deans office and placed on a Required Parent Conference. In addition to this tardy policy, Sierra Vista will utilize a Tardy Lockout System. Grading Policy Grading Scale: 90% - 100% A 80% - 89% B 70% - 79% C 60% - 69% D Below 60% F Grade Determination 1. Attendance and Participation Your attendance and participation are very important to this classroom. Therefore, 30% of your grade will come from your attendance and participation. Many factors are used in determining this grade. Your daily participation in class as well as absences, tardies, and adherence to classroom rules are considered when determining this grade. Good clean-up habits and a positive attitude are also important. 2. Projects and Class work Sierra Vista High School Page: 2

3 While 30% of your grade comes from your Attendance and Participation, the other 70% will come from the work that you do. This includes but is not limited to projects, tests, written work, class discussions, and care of the classroom. Your grade will be calculated by dividing the number of points earned by the number of points possible. Below are some common point values: 100 points - Projects will be graded on a 10 point system then converted to 100 points (see example) 100 points - Tests will be worth 100 points. Semester exams may be worth more. 100 points - Clean up and care of classroom and supplies points - All other work will vary dependant on time and complexity. I will try to inform you of the point value at the beginning of any assignment. If I do not, please feel free to ask. Example of Project grade: Criteria: Did the student follow the directions and meet the rules and standards of the assignment to it s completion. / 5 pts Craftsmanship: There is care and integrity present in the final product. It is neat and clean and well put together. There are no folds or wrinkles in the paper. The skillful use of tools and materials are apparent. The student did not rush through the assignment but took care in its completion. / 3 pts Creativity: Not a copy or copied. Original idea, and student s individuality and personality are present, ability to find skillful original solutions to artistic problems. / 2 pts Total: x 10 = points 10 point grading system detailed: 10-9 A Demonstrates a high understanding of material or product, puts in extra effort, completes assignment on time and within set guidelines. 8 B Has an above average understanding of material or product, completes assignment on time, meets requirements of assignment 7 C Meets requirements of assignment, completes assignment on time. 6 D Assignment is late. 4 Semester Grades: 40% Quarter 1/3 Grade 40% Quarter 2/4 Grade 20% Semester Examination Spelling and grammar will be an important consideration in all written work. Make-up Work, Late Work, and Attendance Make-up procedures- 1. Students must contact the teacher for make-up work within three days after returning from an absence. The Amount of time allocated to complete work is at the discretion of the teacher. 2. Missed tests or quizzes will be made up after school by appointment with the teacher. 3. Students are responsible for daily bell work questions even when absent. Students must get missed questions from another student or from Edmodo.com 4. Students may earn up to 20 points each day for attendance & participation. Students that have excused absences, RPC s, or suspensions may make up these points through an alternative assignment arranged by the teacher. It is the responsibility of the student to ask for this alternative assignment. Hours of Availability- 1. Students may work on projects after school from 1:16 to 2:00pm every day. 2. Students can schedule an appointment with the teacher after school for special/additional assistance or to conference about grades. Attendance After the seventh unexcused absence, students will be denied credit and will receive an F for the course. Classroom Behavior Expectations Classroom Behavioral Expectations 1. Students are expected to quietly begin their opening assignment (bell work) immediately upon entering the classroom. Students who are not on time for class will be subject to Sierra Vista s tardy policy. Students are expected to be in their seats and have their areas clean when the dismissal bell rings. 5 3. Classroom Rules: REMAIN IN YOUR ASSIGNED SEAT - All students are expected to remain in their assigned seat. Switching seats may result in an absence or tardy, loss of participation points as well as progressive discipline. If you need to leave your seat for any reason such as sharpening your pencil, ask permission at an appropriate time by raising your hand. TALK ONLY WHEN APPROPRIATE - During production time when I am not lecturing or addressing the class, talking is permitted. However, you must make sure your talking does not interfere with your work or the work of others. Be certain that your conversation is not incriminating to you or others. When talking, there will be absolutely no swearing, sexual innuendoes, sexual harassment, or destructive conversation. There are many times when talking will not be appropriate at all. For example, when a fellow student has been asked to read aloud or address the class. There will be no talking the first 5 to 10 minutes of class (Bell work) STAY ON TASK This class will not be your opportunity to sleep, do work for other classes, socialize, play computer games, surf the internet or write notes to your friends. Students who do not stay on task will lose participation points and be subject to progressive discipline. Also, horseplay will not be tolerated! PUT NUSSIACE ITEMS AWAY Cell phones are not to be in hand or on the table. They are to be turned off. Headphones must be out of sight. They may not be worn hanging around the neck or left on the table. Nuisance items will be confiscated and given to the dean. BE RESPECTFUL! Have respect for your teacher, address him appropriately. Disrespect to your classmates will not be tolerated. You are also expected to show respect to the classroom and supplies. FOLLOW SCHOOL RULES - ALL RULES AND REGULATIONS SET FORTH BY THE CLARK COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT AND LEGACY HIGH SCHOOL APPLY TO THIS CLASSROOM AND WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED! Here are some common infractions: Dress Code Violations Tardiness Nuisance Items No Food & Drink in the Classroom Other Infinite Campus is an invaluable tool for students and parents to keep informed of student progress. If you do not have an Infinite Campus account, parents can visit the front office to obtain one. Students are expected to use Sierra Vista High School Page: 5

6 Infinite Campus to stay informed of their progress. The teacher will not discuss grades with individual students during class time. Information will be updated weekly. Students will be utilizing an online program called Edmodo to receive lessons and assignments. Parents are encouraged to also use this program to view what goes on in the classroom and to track their son or daughters progress. Please ask your child for the appropriate parent code.
