2 Course Syllabus Course Name and Number: 75-Hour Nurse Aide Course NICC: Hempstead High School Senior High School Semester: Fall 2015 Classroom and Class Time: Hempstead: A st Period: 7:35am-8:22am Senior: A122-7 th Period: 1:33pm-2:20pm Monday-Friday: September 1 st to November 6 th Instructors: Classroom- Candy Raymond RN, ADN, BA CONTACT INFORMATION: - craymond@dbqschools.org Lab and Clinical- Cathy Davis RN MS CONTACT INFORMATION: PH (cell) - dac224@gmail.com Other instructors TBA NICC Course Description: This 75 hour course meets the training of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA) for aides working in nursing facilities (NF) and skilled nursing facilities (SNF). It emphasizes the achievement of a basic level of knowledge and demonstrates skills to provide safe, effective resident/client care. Students will receive (1) high school credit and (3) NICC credits upon successful completion of the course. Grading scale for NICC differs from DCSD and may make a difference on obtaining credit in both. Students must have 78% to receive NICC credit, but could have less and still receive high school credit. Primary Student Learning Outcome Assessed: Apply knowledge and skills to life. Dubuque Community School District Course Description: The course is designed to provide the knowledge and practical skills necessary to provide care and service to residents in long-term care facilities by preparing individuals to become efficient, caring members of the health-care team. Thirty hours of theory will consist of classroom lecture regarding the cares provided by a Certified Nurse Aide. Fifteen hours in a laboratory setting outside of the school day will provide hands on experience of competencies prior to attending 36 hours in a clinical setting. The clinical experience provides students the opportunity to experience resident care in the long-term care environment. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible for state licensing and can test out of skills. Students are responsible for required background check fee, uniform and supplies and the optional state licensure exam fee. Students are responsible for their own transportation to labs and the clinical setting.
3 Course Standards and Behavioral Expectations: Students are required to attend 30 hours of classroom theory and achieve a 78% grade for NICC credit. Attendance is mandatory with standards dictated by state requirements. An excused absence in the eyes of the Dubuque Community School district is still an absence with the state! Arriving at class on time, when the bell rings, and present daily will ensure that you get the needed time in order to receive your certificate of completion. o Please have both feet in the door when the bell rings. The course has been divided into six units of study and there will be a total of 5 tests. You may have water in clear containers. Please fill-up your water bottle between classes. Food is only permitted in cafeteria and poolside. Students are required to attend and pass 15 hours of skills lab beyond the regular school day. This is graded on a pass/fall basis. Poor attitude in the lab setting can make you fail this portion. Students are required to attend 36 hours of clinical experience beyond the regular school day. Poor attitude in the clinical setting can make you fail this portion. Specific requirements for each area are written in detail in the student modules/skills checklists. Cell phone use, for any reason, is prohibited during class time unless authorized by the teacher. Plagiarism and cheating can result in an F in this class. Please complete your own work and keep your eyes on your own test. REMINDER: In compliance with the Iowa Smoke-Free Air Act, effective July 1, 2008, health care and public facilities (such as NICC and nursing homes, in addition to schools) are tobacco-free. Tobacco products may not be used anywhere on these properties. This includes personal vehicles parked on their properties. We expect your respect and cooperation with the requirements of this law. SPECIAL NOTE: Nurse Aide students have the privilege of completing their clinical requirements in various nursing homes in the area. To respect this agreement, students will observe the following guidelines. Wear clean uniform, socks, and shoes. Daily bath and use of deodorant. Nails must be clean, short, and unpolished. Hair must be clean and combed. Long hair must be tied back. Jewelry is limited to a watch and one set of rings and small earrings. Strong perfume is not acceptable. Nametags will be provided and must be worn at all times during clinical hours.
4 Halter-tops, shorts, jeans, miniskirts, and dirty tennis shoes will not be considered appropriate apparel for your clinical experience. Assessments: Formative assessments will be made throughout the class to see where you stand with your understanding of the material. By participating in the activities that we have in class, you are showing your understanding of the material to your instructor prior to test days. There will also be occasional homework which also shows your understanding of the material. Completion of this work is how extra credit is awarded at the end of the class. Summative assessments: Tests are given after every unit along with occasional quizzes. The state test may be taken after completion of this class in order to become certified, should you elect to do so. Content- Major Units of Instruction Unit 1- This unit introduces the student to the role and function of the nursing facility, to the personnel who provide resident care, to the role of the nurse aide, to effective methods of communication, and to the legal and ethical considerations for the nurse aide in nursing and skilled facilities. Unit 2- This unit explores the resident's environment and describes the nurse aide s responsibility in maintaining a safe environment for the resident. Skills include criteria for medical asepsis, organizing resident's unit, recognizing and correcting safety hazards, and transporting and positioning the resident. Unit 3- This unit explores the personal hygiene needs of the resident and the nurse aide's role in helping the resident meet these needs. Including oral hygiene care, bathing, grooming, and elimination needs. Unit 4- In this unit the student explores the normal basic body structure and function related to the aspect of nutrition, the nutrition required in a well- balanced diet, diet modifications that are required to treat special conditions and assisting residents to fulfill nutritional needs. Unit 5- This unit explores routine care procedures the nurse aide will be expected to perform. Included are taking vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, obtaining a specimen, urinary care, and application of heat and cold. Unit 6- This unit helps students explore the care needs of residents with specialized problems. Included are mental illness, cognitive problems, physical and mental disability, terminally ill residents, and the death of a resident. Instructional Strategies: Information is presented via lecture, group discussion, videos, and models. There is also a large portion of this class in which the student goes to lab at NICC and a long term facility. How to get the most from the class sessions:
5 The benefit you derive from the course will depend largely on your own efforts. The course follows the class schedule closely so that you will know each day what material is to be covered. To get the most from the class session, attend class where the material will be illustrated and discussed. You are responsible for the material that was presented when you were absent. We want you to succeed in this class! Come prepared with your materials and be ready to participate in class. The class sessions, videos, and supplemental materials will augment your comprehension of the material. Resources: Your instructor is available daily to help you succeed. At Hempstead, your instructor will be available from 7am until the start of the school day in the classroom. At Senior, she will be available until 3pm in the classroom. There may be other times in which I am able to meet with you. Please come and talk with me- I want you to succeed! NICC has a learning center both in Peosta and at the Town Clock center on Main Street for additional assistance to their students. Required Materials: 75 hour Nurse Aide Course Module (handed out as we go through each unit) Nurse Aide Course Skills Checklist Textbook: Dugan, Diana. (2012). Nursing Assisting; A Foundation in Caregiving (3rd Edition). Grading: THEORY GRADE- assignments, quizzes, and unit tests will be averaged for the percentage grade. A grade will be assigned according to the scale (below). Quiz dates will occasionally be announced in advance. Any assignment not turned in on the assigned due date will be assigned a zero. Some extra credit assignments may be given. Students must be present on the date of each unit test. If you know in advance of an absence, prior arrangements for a quiz or test make-up need to be made within 2 days from when it was given in class. An alternative test will be given that may include essays and fill in the blank. If quiz/test is not made up in the allotted time, a zero will be awarded in power school. Power school reflects the grading scale for the high school. For NICC grading, the percent will remain the same, however, the letter grade that you will be awarded is based on the scale listed below. SKILLS LAB - Pass/Fail grade. It is required to pass the skills lab to participate in CLINICALS. You must pass both to receive high school and college credit for the course. Grades are updated in Power School every 2-3 days so you can follow your child s progress in my class. If I have a concern, I will or call the parent listed for your child. Class Schedule: May be subject to change.- For the theory portion, it has always been weather related. Clinical Labs: All Labs will be held at the Peosta NICC Campus From 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM- NICC at Peosta. LABS ARE MANDATORY TO BE ABLE TO ATTEND CLINICALS. Hempstead Senior SKILLS Day 1 October 27 th Day 2 October 28 th Day 3 October 29 th September 30 th October 1 st October 6 th Hand-washing,, gloving, ungloving, infection control, communication, resident rights, safety, body mechanics, transfers, lifting a resident up in bed, gait belt, ambulation, positioning a resident in bed, dressing/undressing and grooming a resident, bedpan, commode, urinal, incontinent care, emptying a catheter, I&O, obtaining a UA, TEDs and ROM. Bed making, oral and denture care, shaving a resident, complete and partial baths, back rub, feeding a resident, Heimlich maneuver and Vital Signs. BE SURE TO BRING A TOOTHBRUSH, TOOTHPASTE, 2 PAPER CUPS AND MOUTHWASH, A JUICE, WATER, OR SODA, 2 SMALL CONTAINERS OF FOOD (FRUIT CUP, YOGURT, OR PUDDING), AND A PLASTIC SPOON. Bed Baths and Vital Signs. BE SURE TO BRING A WATCH WITH A SECOND HAND, 2 TOWELS, 2 WASHCLOTHS, LOTION, and SOAP & DEODERANT. PLEASE WEAR SHORTS AND A TANK TOP UNDER YOUR CLOTHES; YOU WILL BE BATHING EACH OTHER. State Testing Scenarios- review of all skills. PLEASE REVIEW THE SKILLS FOR THE LAB DAY PRIOR TO COMING TO LAB. Miscellaneous: Ask questions at any time as we work through this information. If I am going too fast and have lost you, please let me know so I can explain the information so you understand. Remember that you can be seen at all times by the instructor and sometimes by other students. Talking during lecture is disrespectful, not acceptable, and is distracting to those around you You are responsible for the material that you missed should you be absent. Remember, for whatever the reason, you cannot receive seat time if you are not in class. Come prepared to lab with your skills packet you were provided from your lecture instructor. You will be shown videos in class that you will use in labs.
