1 Reagan High School Family and Consumer Sciences Department School Year Course: Interior Design 1, Interior Design 2, & Interior Applications Teacher: Room: 303 Lecture & Lab Course: Monday - Friday Course Description: Interior Design 1: Examines housing and interior decisions that individuals and families make based on their needs, the environment, and technology. Emphasis is placed on selecting goods and services and creating functional and pleasing living environments based on sound financial decisions and design principles. Skills in mathematics, technology, and art are reinforced in this course. Interior Design 2: Focuses on understanding the world of work in the housing and interiors industry. Students will investigate such topics as career development; design fundamentals, backgrounds and furnishings; architecture and design; housing decisions; and presentation skills. These activities are both contextual and authentic. This course is designed to further develop a student s technical knowledge and skills in interior design. Interior Design Applications: prepares students for entry-level and technical work opportunities in interior design. Students develop interior applications to meet client s needs using components found in residential and non-residential settings. Students apply design, selection, production, and renovation skills to wall and floor coverings, lighting, windows, case goods, and upholstered furniture. Art and mathematics are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include cooperative education, entrepreneurship, internship, mentorship, school-based enterprise, service learning, and job shadowing. All three of these courses are designed to provide essential skills in the Commercial and Artistic Production Technologies career pathway. The student s interest may be either for practical application or for career development. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include field trips, job shadowing, and services learning. FCCLA leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply instructional competencies and workplace readiness skills to authentic experiences. Obj. 6 and 7 Styles, Construction, and Design 19% (Understand architectural styles and construction components. Understand aspects of a well-designed house.) Obj. 8 and 9 Home Management 12% (Interpret levels of comfort and safety in home design. Understand and apply home maintenance.) Obj. 4, 5, and 6 Design Fundamentals and Theory 66% (Apply the elements and principals of design in the residential and non-residential design field. Critique residential and non-residential space in the respect to space planning guidelines. Produce simple residential and non-residential architectural drawings.) Interior Applications - Enterprise State Course Outline OBJ. 1, 2, and 3 Design Materials and Components 64% (Analyze materials and components used in residential and non-residential design according to client needs. Synthesize furniture and accessories that create an aesthetically pleasing environment. Apply renovation techniques to residential and non-residential spaces and furnishings.) OBJ. 4 Design Presentation 36% (Implement a cumulative housing and interiors-related project within the classroom for a target audience.) Course Structure: A variety of learning styles will be addressed in this class and are reflected in the structure of evaluation for the course. Class time will consist of lecture and class discussion as well as group and individual activities. Grading Policy & Scale: Major tests will be administered after the units are completed. Quizzes will be given, both announced and unannounced. Projects and Labs will count as a major test grade. THIS A PROJECT/LAB HEAVY COURSE. Semester Exams will be given from the North Carolina State VoCats Test Banks. This course has very demanding labs and projects, in which it is important that all students be present. In order to lead by example and teach the responsibility of a work ethic that many jobs are requiring today, I have included a work ethic grade to encourage the attendance and participation that is needed for this course. THIS A PROJECT/LAB HEAVY COURSE. Did you get that? THIS A PROJECT/LAB HEAVY COURSE. Extra credit opportunities are available for Raider Fridays and Random Acts of Kindness (RAK), and community involvement. ** Tests and quizzes MUST be made up within 3 days of returning to class after an absence. If you are unable to make up your test within this time frame, you will receive a zero.** Required Student Supplies: Daily Work/Quizzes 15% Labs/ Projects/Tests 60% Participation/Work Ethic 25% Student Supplies For All Classes: Pencils (daily work) Black and/or Blue Pens (daily work) 1 3-Ring Binder with Pockets (for class) 1 Packet of Notebook Paper 4 Tab Dividers Tennis Shoes for Labs (Labeled: Syllabus, Classwork, Labs/Projects, and Reviews/Tests) Students will need various materials throughout the semester for Labs and Projects **If there are issues with the supply list, please feel free to see me personally** Useful Additional Student Supplies (not required, but helpful!): Calculator 2 USB Flash Drive or External Hard Drive

3 Laptop or Tablet White-Out Unique Supplies for Interior Design classes: Interior Design 1, 2, and Interior Applications Student Supplies Black Foam Core Boards Fabric & Housing Material Samples 2 Black Ultra Fine Point SHARPIES Sketchbook 1 Box of 24 colored pencils- 1 Small Pencil Sharpener with a cover Crayola are fine, PRISMA preferred Rubber Cement ** Additional project supplies will be needed, if there is anything out of the ordinary that cannot be provided by the school, I will give any big project list out, so students and families may financially plan, if there is ever a difficulty, please see me directly.** Room 303 is BYOD! What is BYOD? You ask BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device. Under Additional Supplies you will see a laptop or tablet listed. In November the Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools will open the server system for secured WiFi to be used in classrooms for teachers who have participated in BYOD training. However though it does state device, a handheld device will limit student s ability for test-taking and Power Point Notes. For these courses a laptop or tablet will be more applicable Student Responsibility: Each student is responsible for reading the syllabus and becoming familiar with my expectations and policies. Although every effort will be made to follow this syllabus closely, it is subject to change. WHEN IN DOUBT REFER TO YOUR STUDENT HANDBOOK. You are responsible for any announcements concerning the course which are made during class, whether or not you are in attendance. If you miss class for any reason, you will need to ask a classmate for any notes written/discussed during your absence. It is the student s responsibility to check with me before or after class for any missed work AFTER you have spoken to a classmate. Missed work is found in your subject s file. I will ask for homework assignments at the beginning of class. Unexcused absences are not tolerated; there is no makeup work for unexcused absences. I have an open door policy, but sometimes I may be in a meeting or unavailable. When you need to see me, it is best to set up an appointment to make up work, test, extra help on assignments, or projects. I am always available to help you with work for this course; however I will not DO the work for you. **HOMEWORK is only given when necessary and is expected to be turned in at the beginning of class and completed by ALL students! ** ACK! You ve Missed Class! Now What? Due to unforeseen reasons, doctor, dentist, or orthodontist appointments, you may miss class. However due to the nature of this course and the PROJECTS please consider that when scheduling appointments. First off, if you are going to be gone from class it is highly recommended to me at and give a brief explanation of what is going on and when I can expect you back. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR LECTURES AND WORK GIVEN AND COMPLETED DURING YOUR ABSENCE. Check with a fellow classmate to get notes missed & check with me to get the Worksheets the class received during your absence. I will assign a date for your makeup work to be completed; work not completed on time will receive a zero. If you have questions, please feel free to see me after you have spoken to a classmate and I am always available for an appointment. If you know you will be gone for several days in advance, please set up an appointment at least 24 hours before your absence so we can discuss work to be done while you are gone and file and notes you may need. 3

Raise your hand and ask permission if you need to leave your seat while the teacher is talking. 4. Keep your hands, feet, and personal comments to yourself. 5. I should not be able to see you chew gum. 6. I should not be able to see or hear your cell phone. 7. Power outlet s are not for charging your personal cell phone. 8. Bottled water is the only beverage allowed in the classroom. 9. When in doubt, silence preserves your dignity. 10. Failure to follow instructions and rules will result in a referral. A Job at s Design Firm. Every day you are in class, you are on the job. Each day you are present you earn a Work Ethic Point. Lab/Project days carry 2 Work Ethic points per day. FYI: Participation grades for Labs and Projects cannot be made up. What is Work Ethics? A work ethic is defined as a set of values based on hard work and diligence. A good work ethic includes being reliable, having initiative, or pursuing new skills. Employees exhibiting a good work ethic are often noticed and selected for better positions, more responsibility and ultimately promotion. Employees who fail to exhibit a good work ethic may be regarded as failing to provide fair value for the wage the employer is paying them and often are not promoted or placed in positions of greater responsibility. The Interior Design curriculums has very demanding labs and projects, in which it is important that all team members be present. THIS IS A PROJECT/LAB HEAVY COURSE. Remember: Participation and Work Ethic counts as 25% of your grade. Work Ethic points can be lost or not earned. Ways to lose or not earn Work Ethic Points: Being Absent (Participation Grades cannot be made up!) Tardy to class ISS (In School Suspension) OSS (Out of School Suspension) Issued a D-1 by Causing Classroom and Lab disruptions Cell Phone Confiscation Improper Attire for Class or Lab Not following s Expectations Interior Design Know-Hows Animoto Website that turns photos, graphics, and texts into professional video slideshows with music. CTE Career and Technical Education Edmodo Secure Social Networking Site for Parents, Teachers, and Students. This is how you will turn in papers, projects, get assignments, and extra credit opportunities. FACS Family and Consumer Sciences FCCLA Family Career and Community Leaders of America Nationally Recognized Organization by Colleges & Universities. FCCLA is a Student-Run organization for students who have or will be taking courses in FACS. Opportunities such as Awards, Competitions, Leadership, Scholarships, Scholastic Achievement, Socials, Travel and Volunteer work are possible. Be a Part! I encourage you to join Reagan s FCCLA! 4

5 NTHS National Technical Honors Society If you are a junior or senior and have an overall 3.0 GPA and a 3.5 in your CTE courses you may apply for membership in NTHS. Raider Passes Given on Raider Fridays. Students who choose to wear Raider colors (Black, Teal, and Silver) receive Raider Passes to be used for Bonus Points on Exams/Projects or may be used for Bathroom Passes during Class. RAK (Random Acts of Kindness) Passes Students may earn a RAK Pass given by for choosing to help another out. RAK passes can be redeemed for Food Bucks or may be used for Bathroom Passes during Class. Work Ethic Points -Every day you are in class, you are on the job in Teen Living. Each day you are present you earn a Work Ethic Point. Lab days carry 2 Work Ethic points per day.
