1 Elmira High School Communications I Mrs. Jeanie May Room ext. 304 before and after school and 12-12:30 Course Length: One Semester English Credit (11-12) Prerequisites: None Course Description: Students will study communication, involving intracommunication, inter-communication, and public speaking. They will be involved with the psychology of speaking, small group interaction, involving interviews and problem solving, and large group interaction, involving various deliveries, including impromptu, manuscript, and extemporaneous. Students will also write their original speeches and deliver them. Related Learning Standards: Communicate supported ideas across the subject areas using oral, visual, and multimedia forms in ways appropriate to topic, context, audience, and purpose. Organize oral, visual presentations in clear sequence, making connections and transitions among ideas and elements. Use language appropriate to topic, context, audience, and purpose. Demonstrate control of eye contact, speaking rate, volume, enunciation, inflection, gestures, and other nonverbal techniques. Demonstrate the principles of a chosen form of communication Communicates clear, coherent thinking Career-Related Learning Standards Exhibit appropriate work ethic and behaviors in school, community, and workplace. Apply decision-making and problem-solving techniques in school, community, and workplace. Demonstrate effective communication skills to give and receive information in school, community, and workplace. Demonstrate effective teamwork in school, community, and workplace. Demonstrate career development skills in planning for post-high school experiences by writing a resume, completing an application and participating in an interview. Text: Articles: Expectations: Speech in Action Students will read articles and excerpts from How to Say It. Students are expected to be active learners, meaning that they must share the responsibility for their own education by participating in

2 activities, taking notes, completing assignments, studying and having good attendance. Homework: Work Samples: Attendance: Make-up Work: Tardiness: Honesty: Students should expect 50 to 100 minutes per week. Homework assignments are designed to enrich learning and provide relevance. Students will be given opportunities to do speaking activities that will meet CIM requirements. Regular attendance provides students with the best opportunity for success in class and establishes good habits for a future career. Students should strive for at least 90 percent attendance. Because much of the learning takes place in the classroom from discussions and performances, 15 percent of the student s grade comes from participation. Students who are absent will need to make up participation points by completing an alternative assignment. Students who have excused absences have an equal number of days to make up the work. Alternative assignments may be given since some class activities cannot be replicated, but they will be equivalent in value. If a student is absent on his or her speech date, he or she may give the speech the following day but will be placed at the end of the speech roster for that day. If a student is absent on his or her speech date and has no acceptable excuse, the student will forfeit the grade for that speech. Students who go on prearranged absences will need to turn in the make-up work the week they return to class. Students are welcome to pick up the work the week before the pre-arranged absence. Students who skip class will not be allowed to make up the missed assignment/tests. Because tardiness disrupts the teaching process, students are strongly encouraged to be to class on time. Class instruction will start promptly when the bell rings. If students are not in their seat, ready to learn, when the bell rings, they are tardy. In keeping the school-wide rule, students who accumulate three or more tardies will receive Wednesday school. It is essential that students demonstrate character by being honest in their work and testing. There is no need to cheat! Being honest also implies not letting other students copy your work or test answers. This deprives the cheating students of the opportunity to learn and to develop the self-discipline and character needed to be successful, contributing members of the community. If someone asks to borrow your paper, offer him or her real help instead. Show them how to do the assignment or where they can find the answers in the text.

3 Consequences for cheating and/or plagiarism 1 st Offense: O on assignment/test, conference with parent, teacher, student and administrator or counselor 2 nd Offense: No credit for course Behavior: Students will be expected to follow the class rules. Show respect to self, teacher, others, and property. 1. Come to class prepared with all needed supplies. 2. Be in your seat, ready to learn when the bell rings. 3. Follow directions the first time given. Students who choose to follow the rules can expect an atmosphere conducive to learning, compliments, class celebrations, and positive reinforcements. Students who choose to break the rules will receive consequences. Some possible consequences are time spent before/after school, a parent contact, behavior contract, Wednesday school, or an office referral. Safety: For fire drill or emergency evacuation, students will go to the west side of the building and proceed to the far side of the track. Students will stay together so the teacher may take attendance and make sure everyone safely exited the building. In case of a lockdown, students will move away from the door and window to a safe part of the room at the teacher s/administration s instruction. Evaluation/Performance Expectations: Every effort will be made to keep the student up-to-date on their progress in the class. Students will be shown their own grade approximately every three weeks. Anytime students are concerned about their grade, they are welcome to come in before or after school to see what their current grade is and if they have missing assignments. 10% Participation 10% Final 20% Assignment/Homework 20% Tests/Quizzes 40% Speeches Late Work: Students will receive half credit on any late assignment. No assignments will be accepted more than two weeks late. Extra Credit: A maximum of ten points extra credit is given per quarterequivalent to about two class assignments. Students will need to see the teacher individually for extra credit.

4 Hall Passes: Two hall passes will be awarded to each student per quarter. If these are not used, they may be redeemed for extra credit, five points per pass.
