1 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS (Intro to Business) Mrs. L. Johnson Planning: 3rd period COURSE DESCRIPTION Introduction to Business will introduce you to the role and purpose of business in our economic system, with emphasis on what everyone should know to function effectively as a consumer, a worker, and a citizen. Furthermore, this course will also: (a) serve as a background for other business courses you may take in high school and college, (b) assist you with consumer decision making and many aspects of personal finance, (c) prepare you for future employment, and (d) help you effectively perform your responsibilities as a citizen. TEXT The assigned text for this course is Introduction to Business, 5th and 6 th Editions, Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, 2003 and 2006 by Dr. Betty J. Brown and Dr. John E. Clow. SUPPLIES NEEDED Daily you will need : pen and/or pencil any assigned materials three-ring binder assigned textbook with a bookcover notebook paper ATTENDANCE Poor attendance is the most common cause of academic failure. It is important to me that each student is successful, so good attendance is a very high priority. There is a 10-absence limit per semester. On the 11 th absence, a student is at risk for losing credit for this class. These absences do not include school-related absences or suspensions. Once students have reached 10 absences, they may buy back an absence by working in Room 233 after school for one hour. Students are expected to get to class on time and be ready to learn as soon as class begins. Three tardies will be counted as one absence. Students arriving more than 10 minutes late to class will be considered absent. MAKE-UP WORK Students will need to be responsible for getting make-up assignments (check the assignment folder) or scheduling make-up quizzes or tests in case of an excused absence. Make-up work should be turned in no later than three days after its due date for credit and must have a completed Late Work Form attached. It is YOUR responsibility to find out what assignments or tests you missed during your absences. Check the assignment folder when you return to class and see your teacher if you have any questions. Assignments and tests must be made up within three days of your return to school after an absence. Staple a completed Late Work Form to the upper left-hand corner of your late (make-up) document. Work completed after three days will be penalized 50% of the points possible. All unit work must be turned in by the day the chapter or unit test is given to the class. Tests and quizzes must be made up after school within three days of your return to school. Fill out a Test Make-up Appointment Form. Be sure to keep your appointment. Tests/quizzes not made up within three days will earn a grade of zero. Intro to Business Mrs. L. Johnson Page 1 of 5 2 nd Semester, 2014

2 NOTE: No make-up work will be accepted from students with more than 10 absences until they have begun buying back time after school by working in Room 233. If no attempt has been made to buy back absences over ten, work turned in after an absence will be counted as late. CLASS EXPECTATIONS Introduction to Business is a class that will introduce you to the world of business and personal responsibility and it is important that students demonstrate a good work ethic. Desirable behaviors will be stressed (and graded): Be in class daily. Punctuality is essential. Come to class on time and be in your seat when the bell rings and be ready to begin class. Arrive to class prepared (with supplies, completed homework, etc.) Be an active participant in classroom discussions and activities. Use classroom time wisely and work until the bell rings. Work quietly without disturbing others. Be courteous to others at all times. Use appropriate language for the classroom. Complete assignments and turn them in on time. Be honest! No cheating* no talking during tests and quizzes. Use computer only with permission and only for school related activities use only authorized programs and features of software as instructed by your teacher. Keep your work area cleaner than when you arrived push your chair in when you leave. No food or drink in the lab water is OK. No electronics no headphones, i-pods, cell phones allowed during class. Only one person may leave class at a time and you must sign out and take the license plate pass with you. If you are using a potty pass, you must give it to the teacher before you leave. REMINDER: Five-minute limit. CLASSROOM COMPUTER USE You must have the teacher s permission before logging on to a computer in the classroom. Log in using only your ID and password and using only your account. Use only authorized programs and features of software as instructed by your teacher. Please ask before printing. Electronic Devices Electronic devices (cell phones, ipods, etc. including headphones and earbuds) must be off and put away during school hours and should not be used during class time. 1 st offense--warning device must be turned off and put away and not brought out again. 2 nd offense--confiscation device will be picked up by Security and can be retrieved the next school day. 3 rd offense--confiscation device will be picked up by Security and can be retrieved following a parent conference. Intro to Business Mrs. L. Johnson Page 2 of 5 2 nd Semester, 2014

3 LABELING ASSIGNMENTS Please label all assignments with the following: (A) the chapter number and the assignment in the UPPER LEFT-HAND corner of the paper and (B) the heading (name, period & row, and date) in the UPPER RIGHT-HAND corner. Chapter 1 Vocabulary Freddie Jones Period & Row January 28, 2014 FBLA You are invited to join FBLA, Future Business Leaders of America. FBLA is a regional, state, and national leadership organization for students interested in the world of business. Members attend regional, state, and national conferences, participate in competitions, learn about the world of business, and network with other students who have similar interests. Students meet during Club Schudule and every Tuesday after school in Room 216. You can easily earn Leadership Points by participating in FBLA activities. COURSE GRADING % A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D Below 60% F Chapter and Unit Tests... 35% Daily Work/Homework... 25% Quizzes... 10% Project(s)... 10% Leadership/Business Habits... 10% Current Events... 5% Notebook... 5% CHAPTER/UNIT TESTS: Tests will be given at the end of each chapter (and/or unit) covered in class. A review session will precede these tests. Tests missed because of an excused absence must be made up (before or after school) within three days of your return to school or a grade of zero will be recorded. Fill out a Test Make-Up Appointment Form to schedule a makeup test/quiz. Be sure to keep your appointment. DAILY WORK/HOMEWORK: Daily Work/Homework includes any assigned work that will be turned in or presented to the class and may include handouts, book work, group work, charts, essay-style writings, etc. Daily work missed due to an excused absence must be made up within three days of your return to school. Work turned in late will have 50% deducted. To receive credit, all work must be turned in by the chapter or unit test. A Late Work Form must be attached to all make-up work and late work. QUIZZES: Chapter quizzes will be given with or without warning and are used to assess your understanding of material covered in class and in readings. Quizzes not made up within three days will result in a zero grade. PROJECTS: A project will be assigned for the end of each quarter. The first project will deal with some aspect of a business career and will include a minimum of a report, a poster, and a short presentation using library and Internet sources. Artwork, graphics, charts, videos, and other methods of presentation are encouraged. The second project is an ABC book of Business terms and concepts. (Handouts will be provided.) Intro to Business Mrs. L. Johnson Page 3 of 5 2 nd Semester, 2014

4 LEADERSHIP/BUSINESS HABITS: Leadership Activities as well as Business and Work Habits will be graded. Students are expected to earn at least 20 Leadership Points during the semester. Participating in FBLA activities is an excellent way to earn Leadership Points. In addition, students will be graded on their attendance, punctuality, classroom participation and behavior including language, work habits, and attitude, and extra-curricular activities. These behaviors may be evaluated each day. CURRENT EVENTS: Current events will be turned in every other Friday. You must find a recent newspaper, magazine, or Internet article relating to business. It should be dated within the last month (no later than three months old.) You will provide a copy of the article and you will complete a Current Events Summary Sheet. I may ask students to share their findings with the class. NOTEBOOKS: Notebooks are an easy way to organize all your class materials for easy access and reference. I think you will find it helpful to keep a notebook for most of your classes. In my class, I will require each student to use a three-ring binder with dividers to store work from this class only. This notebook will be collected and graded at the end of each quarter. (A handout will be provided.) Put your work in this notebook as you receive it back not just when you are required to turn in your notebook. One of the best ways to organize the notebook is by chapter. Class notes and tests are to be included in the notebooks. *Cheating is defined as using or copying all or part of someone else s work and handing it in as your own. Cheating also includes looking at or attempting to look at another student s work. Included in this definition are those students who knowingly allow someone to copy their work during a test or an assignment. This syllabus should be kept in your notebook for future reference. Once both the student and parent/guardian have read the syllabus and understand the expectations of this class, please sign the form below and return it to me by the end of the first week of class. I will trade you the signed form for your potty passes. (This signed syllabus will count as one assignment that is worth 10 pts.) Please note, all HHS course syllabi should be on our school s district webpage. Intro to Business Mrs. L. Johnson Page 4 of 5 2 nd Semester, 2014
