1 Instructor Elementary Business Statistics (STA f309) MTWTh 10:00-12:00, UTC Summer 2012 Michael J. Barrett, Ph.D. Office: GSB 4.126F, , Hours: MTW 12:00-1:00 and by appointment The goal of the course is to introduce principles and procedures for working with descriptive and inferential statistics that support research and decision-making in business. Topics include describing distributions using measures of central tendency and variability, development and testing of hypotheses, estimation, confidence intervals, and parametric and non-parametric tests. Knowledge of and facility in applying statistical methods supports conducting your own research, evaluating the research of others, and employing the principles of systematic and objective decision-making essential in business and valuable in everyday life. Prerequisite Fundamental mathematical skills are essential, including algebraic competencies such as solving single variable equations, understanding exponents and square roots, observing order of operations, and working with proportions, fractions, decimals, percentages, and negative numbers. Required Materials Textbook: The Practice of Business Statistics (second edition), David S. Moore, George P. McCabe, William M. Duckworth, and Layth C. Alwan. Calculator: You need a calculator that performs basic operations, including determining square roots and handling two-variable statistics. You ll use the calculator for homework and exams. If you don t have a recent version of Excel (2007 is fine) on your computer you may want to use the business school computer labs. Excel is the application that will most likely be available to you in your workplace, but it is limited in some cases

4 4 Disability Accommodation If you require special accommodations, you must obtain a letter that documents the disability from the Services for Students with Disabilities area of the Office of the Dean of Students ( voice or TTY for users who are deaf or hard of hearing). Present the letter to each instructor at the beginning of the semester and discuss at that time the accommodations you need. Five business days before an exam, you should remind the instructor of any testing accommodations that will be needed. For more information, see ssd/providing.php. Communication You are responsible for checking the Blackboard course site regularly for class work, announcements, and resources. As with all computer systems, there are occasional scheduled downtimes as well as unanticipated disruptions. Blackboard is available at utexas.edu. Support is provided by the ITS Help Desk at Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., so plan accordingly. Components of the Final Course Grade Item Points Exam Exam Exam Portfolio: Research Question 5 Excel Exercises 10 Daily Quizzes 15 Class Participation 20 The final course grade will be assigned based on percentages as follows: Total Possible 500 A above B C D A B C D B C D F below 60 Important University Notices and Policies Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) If you are worried about someone who is acting differently, you may use the Behavior Concerns Advice Line to discuss by phone your concerns about another individual s behavior. This service is provided through a partnership among the Office of the Dean of Students, the Counseling and Mental Health Center (CMHC), the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and The University of Texas Police Department (UTPD). 5 5 Emergency Evacuation Policy Occupants of buildings on the UT Austin campus are required to evacuate and assemble outside when a fire alarm is activated or an announcement is made. Please be aware of policies regarding evacuation: Familiarize yourself with all exit doors of the classroom and the building. Remember that the nearest exit door may not be the one you used when you entered the building. If you require assistance to evacuate, inform me in writing during the first week of class. In the event of an evacuation, follow my instructions or those of class instructors. Do not re-enter a building unless you re given instructions by the Austin Fire Department, the UT Austin Police Department, or the Fire Prevention Services office. Tentative Course Schedule The syllabus reflects present plans, but as we go through the course those plans may need to change to maximize learning opportunities for the class and to respond to your feedback. I ll communicate changes as early and clearly as I can, so continue to check your frequently and the course site on Blackboard. And of course, be in class every meeting. Text Section Topics Reading for Next Class Planned Dates Introduction: Activity, Administrative Matters May 31 Chapter 1 Descriptive Statistics, Distributions June 4 Chapter 1 Normal Distributions June 5 Chapter 2 Scatterplots, Correlation, Regression June 6 Chapters 3-4 Sampling, Experiments, Inference, Sampling Distribution Review Sheet June 7 Review and Exam Prep June 11 First Exam June 12 Exam Discussion and Recap June 13 Chapter 6 Inference: Hypotheses, Confidence Intervals, Significance June 14 Chapter 7 Test Statistics: One-Sample t June 18 Test Statistics: Two-Sample z and t Review Sheet June 19 Review and Exam Prep June 20 Second Exam June 21 Exam Discussion and Recap June 25 Chapter 5 Probability Principles and Binomial Distributions June 26 Chapter 8 Confidence Intervals, Single Proportions, Two Proportions June 27 Chapter 9 Inference for Two-Way Contexts, Chi-Square and Frequencies Review Sheet June 28 Review and Exam Prep July 2 Third Exam July 3 Exam Discussion and Recap July 5 Tips for Success The homework, portfolio, and in-class activities provide opportunities for hands-on practice in working with statistics practice that complements watching an instructor work examples. That is, you will be doing the kinds of tasks that you ll be asked to do on exams. After all, preparing for something important should include multiple opportunities to practice that important thing, including the opportunity to make mistakes that serve to be instructive rather than punitive. 5
