1 Liberty High School - General Chemistry Class Expectations Your year in chemistry will be both exciting and rewarding. To get the most from your education follow these few simple guidelines - Be honest with me, with your peers and with yourself this includes academic honesty do not copy others assignments including homework. Do not allow other people to copy your work. This is considered cheating and will earn you a zero for the assignment with no opportunity to redo that or any alternate assignment. Be responsible for your education and for your actions. Come to class prepared with all your materials and ready to learn every day. Respect of others by being respectful of them. Also, respect the equipment and property in the classroom and school. Try your hardest. There is no way you can fail if you try hard, complete all assignments, and follow directions. Communicate with me. If you are having trouble with anything, inside or outside of class, let me know. Being able to help you is the best part of my job. Teacher Availability: I am part-time, so I am only available before or after school on blue days by appointment only. Please let me know in advance that you ll be coming so I can be ready for you by ing me. cynthia.jorgensen@asd20.org Website: Classroom Expectations: Be on time! You need to be in your assigned seat and answering the Question of the Day (QoD) when the bell rings to avoid being counted tardy. The fourth tardy of the semester you will receive an administrative referral. Also, the QoDs will be graded every notebook check. Hall passes: No one will be allowed to leave the room in the first thirty minutes of class; this follows Liberty s Prime Time Policy. New this year, every student will have to sign out before leaving the room (in case of a drill or emergency), so if I see that the ability to leave the room is being abuse, that privilege may be taken away. Participate appropriately in all class activities. No electronic devices other than a calculator in class. You may not use a cell phone as a calculator. Unapproved use of electronic will result in: 1 st time - Take it and keep it until the end of the period (your warning) 2 nd time - Take it and you must pick it up from the office 3 rd time - Take it, we ll call your parents, and have them pick it up for you No food or drink in class other than a water bottle. During a lab you may keep a water bottle at your seat. Visit and use my website regularly. All notes and assignments can be found there, as well as dates for tests, quizzes, and larger assignments. Materials: You will need the following every day for class: 1. Chemistry Notebook a 3-ring binder for this class only with at least 5 dividers 2. Pen (blue or black ink) and Pencil both are needed to complete lab reports 3. Calculator any type will do, but a scientific is recommended (no cell phones)

2 Grading policy: Late assignments will be accepted for half credit up until the next test unless it is in the case of an excused absence, which you need to follow the student handbook guidelines to receive full credit. After that time I will no longer accept them. For emergencies, I understand that life does interfere sometimes. Each circumstance will be considered on a case-by-case basis. You need to communicate with me. Lab make ups must be prearranged with your teacher. You will have one week to make up a lab missed for an excused absence. After a week the lab will be recorded as a 0. Grading Guidelines: We grade using weighted categories system broken down in following manner: Assignments (20% in progress grade, 17% of total grade) Assignments will be graded for accuracy, some for completion, and some will not be graded, but gone over in class. Credit for assignments will be recorded in the gradebook as a Notebook Check at the end of the unit, so you will see on large grade for assignments before the unit test. Labs (15% in progress grade, 13% of total grade) Labs are packed full of information that will be on tests so they need to be kept in your notebook. The data collection part of the labs will be given a participation/completion grade since I want the students to focus on the information on the concepts covered in the lab rather than weather or not their lab technique is perfect. The expectation is that you contribute equally as partners to the lab. You are expected to understand the procedure and concepts prior to performing the lab. You will be assessed on your comprehension of lab concepts through lab quizzes which will be the bulk of the lab grade. Quizzes (25% in progress grade, 21% of total grade) Quizzes are used to assess understanding throughout the unit. Most quizzes will be announce in advance, but there may be some pop quizzes as well. You are expected to take a quiz you have missed the class period after you return. You should know that it occurred because you checked my website the day you were absent to see what you missed. Tests (40% in progress grade, 34% of total grade) A common test at the conclusion of each unit (that means each chemistry teacher will give the same test). Tests will be announced well in advance. Therefore, if you are absent the day or days before a test, you will still take the test! If you are absent on the day of a test, you will take it on the day of you return. You must be prepared. There are no test retakes during the semester. You may retake one test within two weeks prior to finals week. This opportunity is only available to students with three or less missing assignments. Final (15% of total grade) Students will be given a common final at the end of the semester that will cover everything covered in that semester. Lab Policy: 1. A Lab Safety Contract must be signed by the student and their parent/guardian and a Lab Safety Test must be passes at 80% proficiency before being able to participate in any labs. Failure to meet these requirements will result in a zero for any lab missed. This is for the safety of you and everybody else in the class. 2. The most important thing for you to remember is to put your equipment away and clean up your mess. Do not put dirty beakers back and do not leave them on the counter. You must be responsible to wash them with soap, dry them and return them to the designated area. 3. Do not put any solids or trash in the sinks or troughs. Follow teacher s directions carefully. 4. Wash your counter with a sponge after the lab.
