1 Teacher: Mrs. Gudgeon Room: A 124 Independent Living Phone: cgudgeon@everettsd.org Course Objective: This course was designed to analyze strategies to manage multiple individual, family, career and community roles and responsibilities. Students will develop skills and knowledge needed to created a life plan for achieving individual, family and career goals. Students will gain knowledge in policies that support consumer rights, the impact of technology and demonstrate management of individual and family resources, including food, clothing, shelter, health care, recreation, and transportation. Students will concentrate on personality characteristics, goal setting, careers and further education/training. The Teacher: My name is Corie Gudgeon and currently I love teaching high school students life applicable skills! Along with my passion for teaching, I love spending time with my family and friends, running and the outdoors. Units of Instruction: Goal Setting, Careers, Consumerism, Budgeting/Finances/Banking, Credit, Taxes, Investing, Housing/Car Buying, Insurance, and if time permits, Food, Clothing and Textiles. Materials Needed: Students will need to have a section of their 3 ring binder for Independent Living. Paper and blue or black ink pens should be in class everyday along with class assignments. A flash or thumb drive is strongly recommended for this class. Essential Learning Objectives: This course offers various learning techniques. Students will be able to: Understand the meaning what is read Write clearly and effectively Communicate ideas clearly and effectively Analyze and evaluate the impact of real life Student Learning Guidelines and Expectations: 1. Please practice Trust, Honor, and Respect by respecting each other, the teacher, guests, and equipment. 2. Please respect each other, the teacher, guests, and equipment. 3. Always act appropriately (refraining from swearing/profanity) and acting safe. 4. Be on time and prepared for class. Electronic Devices should be away unless teacher permission. 5. Come equipped with a positive and enthusiastic attitude with appropriate language for class and school. 6. Water Only allowed in class. All other food or beverages will be asked to be put away. I will adhere to the expectations of the school stated in the Student Handbook. If the student fails to respect the expectations, they will be given a warning and then disciplinary actions will occur depending on severity of the offense, according to the school s policies.

2 Bathroom Policy: Students will need to ask permission to use the bathroom. Teacher expects students to use the bathroom before or after class unless it is a legitimate emergency or medical need. Make-up/Late work: Students are expected to make-up all work missed due to absences. It is the student s responsibility to check on missing work at appropriate times. He/she will have equal number of school days to make-up the work as for which they are absent. Makeup work will need to be turned into the turn-in basket with Absent written on top of the assignment. Late Work: All assignments should be completed in class and turned in on time. The class schedule allows ample time for completion of all work during class. If a student is absent from class, or has fallen behind, it is his/her responsibility to obtain make-up work at appropriate times from the teacher. Make-up Quizzes: If a student is absent on a quiz day the student will need to make an appointment with the teacher on the day they return to make up the quiz. Appointments for make-up quizzes times will only be before or after school (until 2:30 pm). Quizzes that are not make-up will greatly affect a student s grade. Grading and Assessment: This class will be based on a standards based 4.0 grading scale. The student s grade is based off meeting criteria at standard. The student will be given rubrics for each assessment well in advance so that they know what criteria they must meet at standard. Category Standards: Summative 70% (Projects) Category Formative: 20% (Quizzes/Daily Work) Category Formative:10% 21 st Century Skills 4.0 Grading Scale 4 Oustanding/Above (100%) 3.5 Satisfactory (85%) 3 Met Standard (75%) 2 An Attempt Made (50%) 1 No Attempt Made Extended Learning projects will be assigned during the semester. Two projects will need to be completed by the end of the semester. Students will be given a list of projects that fit the requirements. Attendance and Tardies: Students are expected to attend class regularly and be on time for class. Disciplinary Action will occur if a student is frequently tardy without a note.
