1 Since 1906 PSSL 61 st ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION OF PHOTOGRAPHY RULES AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY 1. ENTRIES a. Eligibility to participate Entry is open to all photographers, amateur and professional, worldwide, however, an entry may be rejected when the sponsoring organization, or its agent, in its reasonable discretion, believes the entry does not conform to exhibition rules and conditions. b. Sections - The competition is held under the following four sections, and an entrant may enter any one or all sections and can submit a maximum of four (4) images per section and a total 16 images for the four sections. 1. Open Colour 2. Open Monochrome 3. Creative 4. Nature Please Note : The same image (or a like in camera or a reproduction duplicate of that image) must not be submitted in more than one section. Entries that had been accepted for any previous PSSL International Competition and Exhibition are not eligible to be resubmitted for current, or any future PSSL International Competitions. c. Entries Only digital entries will be accepted. Entries must originate as photographs (image captures of objects via light sensitivity) made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally. Images may be acquired digitally or scanned from traditional film to create a digital file. Any modification of the original image may be made by the entrant either digitally or otherwise. Artwork or computer graphics created by the entrant may NOT be incorporated even if the photographic content predominates the subject to the compliance of the divisional restrictions and conditions stipulated for relevant sections under Definitions. Further all entrants must have sole copyright to every element of each image they submit. d. Copyrights & Ownership - By virtue of submitting an entry for this Exhibition, the entrant certifies the work as their own (aliases are not permitted). The organisers assume no responsibility for misuse by anyone of the copyright of published images. FINAL VERSION 02 AUGUST 2016 Page 1 of 6

2 e. Names - An image showing the authors name, title or any other mark on the image or which will appear on the judge s screen will be disqualified. f. Submission of Entries i. Entries will be accepted only in digital format as per specifications given herein, and received on-line via PSSL website ii. All details in the on-line entry form must be filled in English (Western / Latin Alphabet) only. iii. Please follow the instructions for submission at the above website. iv. There is no specific convention to be followed in file naming. Please provide a title for each image in the appropriate cage when uploading images. v. Images will not be accepted in Print, CD/DVD or via . vi. Entries will not be returned. g. Image Size - All images are to be submitted in JPEG format. Image size must be limited to 1400 pixels wide and a maximum of 1050 pixels high (including any borders). Images in portrait format must be 1050 pixels high. The resolution should be 300dpi and Images must not exceed one (01) MB file size per image. Please check all image sizes before submission, images with sizes greater than specified will be not be accepted by the on-line entry platform and will be rejected automatically. h. Judging All eligible entries in each section will be presented to the judges simultaneously on separate colour calibrated monitors having pixel dimensions of 1400 pixels wide x 1050 pixel high and judged using a marking system. An entrant s four images will be distributed throughout four rounds of judging in that section. i. Acceptances All images that qualify for the final round based on the minimum qualifying cut-off point in the penultimate round will be listed as accepted. Of those images that are accepted from all sections, a total of 225 images being the highest scoring images from all four sections will be included in the print catalogue. Prints of these 225 images will also be displayed at the PSSL 61 st International Photographic Exhibition to be held from November 2016 in Colombo for Public Viewing. j. Notifications - Notification of results will be sent by and posted on PSSL website. Entrants should ensure that they provide an active address and that spam filters are set to accept s from photosocsl@gmail.com. Notifications will not be sent by post. k. Submission of High Resolution Images for Display PSSL will exhibit high quality prints of a total of 225 images from all four sections including all award / certificate winning entries at an exhibition to be held in Colombo on the dates given in the Exhibition Calendar. Entrants whose images that are selected for printed display will be requested (by immediately after judging) to provide higher resolution images for printing. It is the responsibility of the entrant to submit high resolution images resized to a minimum of 18 on the longer side and file size not exceeding 6 mb, within a period of 5 days of such notification. Failure to do so may result in such images not being displayed at the exhibition and/or not being included in the exhibition catalogue. However, any awards / prizes won for such image will be valid. Compliance - An entry may be rejected when the sponsoring organization, or its agent, in its reasonable discretion believes the entry does not conform to exhibition rules and conditions or is deemed unsuitable. m. FIAP Compliance - With the sole act of submitting his/her images or files to a salon under FIAP Patronage, the entrant accepts without exception and with no objection that the submitted images can be investigated by FIAP to establish if these obey to FIAP regulations and definitions even if the entrant is not a member of FIAP; that FIAP will use any means at its disposal for this undertaking; that any refusal to cooperate with FIAP or any refusal to submit the original files as captured by the camera, or failure to provide sufficient evidence, will be sanctioned by FIAP and that in case of sanctions following the non compliance with FIAP regulations, the name of the entrant will be released in any form useful to inform the breaches of the rules. It is recommended to leave the EXIF data in the submitted files intact in order to ease eventual investigations. 2. PATRONAGES The PSSL 61 st International Competition and Exhibition of Photography is being conducted by the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka under the patronages of International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP), Royal Photographic Society of UK, The Image Colleague Society (ICS) Image Sans Frontier (ISF) and the Global Photographers Union (GPU) which was formally United Photographers International (UPI). Following are the Patronage Reference Numbers received for the competition from the respective authority. Local entrants have other payment options. Please see web site for details. Entries without the relevant entry fee as at the closing date will be rejected and will not be judged. 4. CATALOGUES A limited number of full colour catalogue consisting of a listing of all accepted entries and images of those selected for print display will be printed. Any overseas entrant who wishes to receive a copy will have to bear a cost of US $ 08. For Local entrants the cost will be SL Rupees 700/=. All entrants fulfilling entry conditions will receive an Internet link to down load a digital copy of it. All awards and catalogues for International FINAL VERSION 02 AUGUST 2016 Page 3 of 6

4 participants will be dispatched by sea mail. Local entrant s awards and catalogues will be handed over at the opening of the Exhibition / during the period of exhibition or to be collected from PSSL office. 5. REPRODUCTION - By submitting an entry for the 61th International Photography Competition & Exhibition the entrant permits the organisers to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication in the exhibition catalogue, on an internet site and/or in other media related to the PSSL 61st International Photography Competition & Exhibition. Note: Entrants who indicate that their images may not be reproduced or used may not be eligible for awards or inclusion in audio-visuals of the exhibition and could be subject to disqualification by the exhibition sponsors. 6. DEFINITIONS a. FIAP DEFINITIONS i. NATURE All images used in International Exhibition sections recognized by the FIAP must meet the Definition as follows: Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in situations depicting natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible. Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. No techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content, or without altering the content of the original scene, are permitted including HDR, focus stacking and dodging/burning. Techniques that remove elements added by the camera, such as dust spots, digital noise, and film scratches, are allowed. Stitched images are not permitted. FINAL VERSION 02 AUGUST 2016 Page 4 of 6

5 All allowed adjustments must appear natural. Color images can be converted to greyscale monochrome. Infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations, are not allowed. Images entered in Nature sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above can have landscapes, geologic formations, weather phenomena, and extant organisms as the primary subject matter. This includes images taken with the subjects in controlled conditions, such as zoos, game farms, enclosures that make the subjects dependent on man for food, and botanical gardens. ii. BLACK AND WHITE (MONOCHROME) A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey. A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category; such a work can be reproduced in black and white in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage. On the other hand a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category; such a work requires colour reproduction in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage. 7. AGREEMENT - All entries shall conform to the stricter of the above definitions for acceptances to be validated by all the International Organizations granting recognition or patronage. SUBMISSION OF AN ENTRY SIGNIFIES ACCEPTANCE OF ALL ABOVE CONDITIONS AND THE ENTRANT ACCEPTS THE ALL DECISIONS BY THE ORGANIZERS AS FINAL. 8.
