The Image Density It is important that when you assess the images you are making for judging, they be viewed under lighting/screen conditions that match the Awards judging environment. Lighting Specifications for Prints The lighting system uses two sets of 40 watt colour tubes (5000 K, CRI 98) with each set of lights at 45 from the print. Light intensity is tested with a light meter set at 100 ISO from the centre of the print, pointing the incident meter towards the judge viewing position. The exposure reading should be 1/60 second at f2.8. The ambient room lighting should be one stop less, i.e. 1/30 second at f2.8. Some professional laboratories set-up environments matching the awards system to make the best prints possible. You can do the same by following these guidelines. The Fixing Methods for Prints on Mounts All prints and mounts must be affixed permanently using methods and materials that are proven to provide long term adhesion. Please note that many spray adhesives, transfer adhesives and glues provide minimal or temporary fixing only and are designed for prints, which will be held securely in place in a frame or album. 9 COMMERCIAL THE 2014 AIPP ACT COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR THE WINNER RECEIVES TROPHY AND $250 CASH Category Rules and Requirements This category includes Architecture, Commercial, Corporate, Fashion, Sport & Documentary and Industrial photography. Entries into this category must have been commissioned. A commissioned entry is a photograph that you, as the photographer, have been hired or engaged to take, by a third party. Stock photography is generally self-commissioned and therefore cannot be entered in this category. The exception would be where the entry was originally commissioned by a client or the stock library. Personal images created for your book or portfolio are not eligible for these categories because they were not commissioned by a third party. It is sufficient for the photographs to have been taken as part of the commission. They do not have to have been used by the client. Non-commissioned commercial work may be eligible for the Illustrative, Sport, Travel, Portraiture, Landscape, Documentary and Science, Environment & Nature categories. Entrants to the corporate category may include non-photographic and 3D elements used as part of the brief, as long as the image submitted remains substantially photographic in origin. Judging Considerations Commercial photography includes, for example, industrial, architectural, corporate, portraiture, food, jewellery, still-life, product, life-style, sport and travel photography. It can include work for annual reports, in-house publications, historical records, reference and progress reports, books, internet, images taken for billboards, print, online, point-of-sale etc. The subject matter isn t the issue; rather the purpose for which the photography was created. Entries will be judged in the context of a corporate image. A broad view will be taken as to how the image could be used in a corporate context. 9

TRAVEL THE 2014 AIPP ACT TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR THE WINNER RECEIVES TROPHY AND $250 CASH Category Rules and Requirements Entries into this category may be commissioned or self-commissioned. Travel photography involves an area s landscape, people, cultures, customs and history. It may express or reference the feeling of a time and place, or simply portray a land or its people in its natural state. Photographs must be single capture images with no retouching that materially affects the authenticity of the document. Traditional adjustments for exposure, contrast and colour are allowed, as is minor cloning or removing of incidental elements within the scene. Textured layers are not permissible. In other words, it has to be real! Photographs with multiple exposures or extensive Photoshop work should be entered into another category, such as Illustrative. Judging Considerations All destinations will be considered in the light of being travel photography, even if the location in the photograph is the same as where the print judging is being held. Both within Australia and overseas are acceptable. Camera technique and print quality are considered to be important, but the judges will be paying special attention to composition, light and camera angle. Entries should communicate some aspect of travel, but the judges will be asked to interpret this widely. However, also consider the Portrait, Documentary, Illustrative and Landscape categories for your entries. David Paterson 10

SCIENCE, ENVIRONMENT & NATURE THE 2014 AIPP ACT SCIENCE, ENVIRONMENT & NATURE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR THE WINNER RECEIVES TROPHY AND $250 CASH Category Rules and Requirements Entries into this category may be commissioned or self-commissioned. Entries must be of scientific, environmental, nature or wildlife photography. This is not a category for only scientific entries. Entrants must provide a description / explanation of the photograph during the online entry to assist the judges in assessing the content of the print properly. If the photograph contains animal species the description must clearly indicate if the subject is either wild; captive or; has been handled or manipulated. A limit of 25 words. Photographs must be single capture images with no retouching that materially affects the authenticity of the document. Traditional adjustments for exposure, contrast and colour are permitted. No cloning or removing of elements within the scene is permitted. Cropping the image is permitted. More than one single-capture image can appear on the entry as some scientific images are several images presented as a whole this includes stitches or mosaics. Judging Considerations Entries into the Scientific, Environment and Nature category will be judged broadly, based on content, impact and professional quality. The accompanying description of the image may have an impact on the assessment of the print. Entries in this category are expected to illustrate their subject matter authentically. The judges are looking for creative treatments of subjects within the confines of presenting them authentically. 11

LANDSCAPE THE 2014 AIPP ACT LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR THE WINNER RECEIVES TROPHY AND $250 CASH Category Rules and Requirements Entries into this category may be commissioned or self-commissioned. Photographs must depict the natural or human/urban environment, but may be interpretative (in other words, they need not be literal images of a scene). Composite and non-composite images are acceptable in this category. Judging Considerations Entries will be judged on the basis of a landscape image, whether real or imaginary. Aspects such as composition, light and content will be closely considered. Camera technique and print quality are also considered to be important in a successful landscape image. Judges in this category will consider both traditional and contemporary values. Geoff Comfort 12

ILLUSTRATIVE THE 2014 AIPP ACT ILLUSTRATIVE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR THE WINNER RECEIVES TROPHY AND $250 CASH Category Rules and Requirements Entries into this category may be commissioned or self-commissioned Illustrative photography is a general category designed to recognise photographs taken or produced to illustrate a subject or topic. They may be conceptual or representative in nature. Examples include images taken to illustrate a magazine article, a website or a book cover, but may also be outtakes from assignments, stock photography or self-commissioned. Images entered into this category may be suitable for other categories as well e.g. a portrait or a landscape to illustrate a magazine article may be suitable for both categories. As an example, a landscape photograph that includes something more than the landscape (such as an aircraft in the sky) may be better entered into the Illustrative category where the expectations of the judges are not so specific. Judging Considerations Entries into the Illustrative category will be judged broadly, based on content, impact and professional quality. Judges will be asked to assume the image is capable of illustrating something. David Paterson 13

PORTRAIT THE 2014 AIPP ACT PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR THE WINNER RECEIVES TROPHY AND $250 CASH Category Rules and Requirements Entries into this category may be commissioned or self-commissioned Portraiture photography is broadly defined and can include family portraiture, corporate and travel work, and creative and interpretive portraits. Portraits of pets and animals are acceptable. Judging Considerations Entries into the Portrait category will be judged broadly, based on content, impact and professional quality. Is the print entry a professionally produced or crafted portrait? More conventional entries of family groups or of a domestic nature may be better entered into the Family Category, but they must have been commissioned. The judges will be asked to consider portraiture in its broadest context. Use of post-production techniques is acceptable, but extensive use of post-production techniques may indicate the entry is better entered into another category, such as Illustrative. Dan O Day 14

FAMILY THE 2014 AIPP ACT FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR THE WINNER RECEIVES TROPHY AND $250 CASH Category Rules and Requirements Entries into this category MUST be commissioned by the family depicted in the entry. Your entry does not have to be the photograph you sold to your client but it MUST be from the same photography session. This category will be judged in 3 sub categories, Family Groups, Single family members and Pregnancy/Babies. Entries are to reflect the type of photography you are selling to your clients. Entries can be multilayered allowing the use of additional photographic elements. Diptychs, triptychs and series are also permitted, as too are head swaps. The judges will be asked to reward excellence in lighting, posing, composition and camera technique. Judging Considerations Entries will be judged on lighting, posing, composition and camera technique as well as being rewarded for creativity & imagination... Emotional content can be equally as important as more traditional photographic benchmarks. Successful images may be excellent examples of traditional family portraiture, or reflect the highest level of contemporary market expectations. Emotional impact and evidence of good communication between the photographer and the subjects may also be considered a key ingredient because this category is designed to recognise the daily work of professional portrait photographers. Robyn Geering 15

WEDDING THE 2014 AIPP ACT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR THE WINNER RECEIVES TROPHY AND $250 CASH Category Rules and Requirements Entries into this category must be commissioned and photographed at the clients actual wedding. If several photographic elements are used, all the elements must have been taken at the same wedding. Judging Considerations Entries into the wedding category will be judged broadly, based on content, impact and professional quality. Very high standards of traditional wedding styles should be duly recognised, as should images that reflect the highest level of contemporary market expectations. The judges will also consider the entries in the light of the category - is the entry a great example of wedding photography? Images that are more interpretative or contemporary in nature may be better entered into Illustrative. Kelly Tunney 16
