DESCRIPCIÓN DEL CURSO En este curso, el estudiante adquirirá habilidades en el lenguaje (en forma escrita y oral) para que pueda desenvolverse con propiedad en diversas actividades diarias por medio del uso de estructuras y vocabulario elemental en situaciones comunicativas. También recibirá información sobre aspectos culturales necesarios para sobrevivir en un ambiente de habla inglesa. 3. GENERAL OBJECTIVE The student will master all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) at an elementary level. 4. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES 4.1. LISTENING/ SPEAKING The student will be able to: a) listen for details. b) Listen for the main idea c) talk about events in the past d) comment on holidays, films and music e) talk about prohibitions f) talk about work, abilities g) discuss people s appearance and character 1

Questions to get information about travelling 6. METHODOLOGY AND RESOURCES The methodology applied is centered in the student and has the communicative approach as its foundation. For that purpose, real-life situations that need communication will be used (real-life simulations). A guided discovery approach to learning will allow the students to work out the rules of the language for themselves. There will be a strong focus on listening and speaking, although, reading and writing will be dealt in depth to enable students to communicate in a meaningful way about significant topics. 3

ASSESSMENT 7.1 EVALUATION ACTIVITIES The student will be assessed through a variety of activities that include, among others, the following: - oral work, - group work - homework - presentations - written production - grammar and vocabulary exercises - reading controls - unit quizzes, - midterm oral and a written exam, - laboratory work, - a final oral and a final written exam. 7.2 EVALUATION DATES FIRST CYCLE OF INTENSIVE CLASSES From Monday January 18 to Monday, March 15, 2009 Midterm Written exam Thursday, February 11, Midterm Oral Exam Friday, February 12, Handing in midterm grades From February 12 to Thursday, February 18, Handing in class participation grades: Tuesday March 9, Final written exam: Friday, March 12, Final Oral Exam: Monday, March 15, Handing in final grades: from Monday, March 15 to Tuesday, March 16 until 12h00. 8 7.3. GRADING SYSTEM In order to pass the course, students must obtain a minimum of 30/50 points. Grades are distributed as follows: Classwork: Homework, quizzes, presentations 9 points 5 or 10 hours of lab work with Ellis Intro* 1 point Midterm written exam 10 Midterm oral exam 10 Final written exam 10 Final oral exam 10 TOTAL 50 *Students of the intensive courses have to work 5 hours in Ellis Intro. Important note: If a student misses a quiz which forms part of the grade for class work or misses to hand in a piece of homework, then it is up to the teacher to allow the student to take the quiz afterwards or accept the homework. The grade for class work has to be handed in 3 days before the final exam ATTENDANCE Students are permitted up to TEN absences per course. If a student is more than 10 minutes late, s/he is considered to be absent. If a student has ELEVEN to TWENTY absences, s/he has to get 40 over 50 points to pass the course.
