Instructor: Emilia Chuquin, PhD. Course Description Spanish XL 3 is the third of a three-quarter series (Spanish 1, 2, 3) of elementary Spanish language and culture (first college-level Spanish). It is designed to continue to introduce you to the Spanish language and the many facets of Hispanic culture. The communicative integrated language teaching approach method will be used in this course. It will develop linguistic fluency in an interactive way. Therefore, this class will be centered in helping students to develop communicative competence in all language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. These activities also will give an opportunity for the student to practice grammatical structures, acquire new vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions to be used in communicative activities. Likewise, this course will help the student to build up cultural insights in an analytical manner by examining information, ideas, historical events from Americas and Spain. Objectives The goals and objectives of Spanish XL 3 are to continue developing linguistic fluency and attain proficiency in all four communicative skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The main objective is to introduce students to the present subjunctive for expressing expectations, hopes, emotions, opinions, attitudes, doubts, conjectures, conditional, past perfect, imperfect subjunctive, hypothesizing about the present and the future. This course also will expand more about direct and indirect object pronouns, review the past imperfect and the preterit, por and para, possessive pronouns and adjectives. More importantly, in order to acquire fluency in Spanish this course will be based in many interactive class conversational activities such as discussions, role-plays, debates, brainstorms, poems, and oral reports in an analytical manner. Thus, you will participate in pair and group activities that will give you the opportunity to practice your Spanish in a relaxed environment. Grammar is necessary for communication. However, vocabulary, discourse strategies and familiarity with the cultural norms are equally important. Spanish XL 3 will be conducted entirely in Spanish. Required Texts: UNIDOS: An Interactive Approach (textbook) by Guzman et al., 1 st edition 2013 Unidos: My SpanishLab (Electronic) in MySpanishLab.com Suggested book: 501 Spanish Verbs (fully conjugated in all tenses) by Chritopher Kendris Course ID: CRSKLLD (To register in MySpanishLab go to Text Material Covered: Spanish XL 3: Capítulo 9 through Capítulo 12 Attendance and Participation: It is strongly recommended that you attend all scheduled classes to develop your language skills in Spanish. You are expected to arrive on time and not to leave from class before the session ends, if you do you will have an absence for that day. No matter what the reason for the absence, failure to attend class always results in missed opportunities to hear and speak Spanish. In an interactive language class where classroom work is an essential component of the course, excessive

2 absenteeism is unacceptable. The classroom is the primary environment in which you will be exposed to Spanish language. These cannot be made up! In case of family/medical emergency, please contact Jenny Polutan or your instructor. Class participation means completing assignments/preparing the reading materials (UNIDOS online in MySpanishLab.com) before class and participating in class activities/discussions by asking and answering questions and participating in role-play or pair activities. You must come well prepared to class and always use Spanish, use new and recycled vocabulary, make positive contribution to class and have respect and positive attitude toward your classmates and instructor. Important: Cell phones, pagers or other electronic communication devices should be turned off or set to silent. Furthermore, they are entirely prohibited during the exams. NO chewing gum is accepted in class (see Student Conduct Notices). Attendance: 10%; class participation: 10%. Total: 20%. Homework: It consists in online in MySpanishLab exercises (see Learning Module section). 1 To have access to My Spanish Lab you have to register online with Instructor s Course ID Number which is printed on the first page of your syllabus, and with your Student Access Code. Student Access Code, you can purchase on the My Spanish Lab website if you have not already done so. You may purchase 6 or 24 months access to My Spanish Lab. In order to register in MySpanishLab go to The online activity will be granted based on your effort, not on the facts. Note, after ending each chapter in class, you will have more than 24 hours (Due Tuesdays 11:59 A.M. PT) to finish this electronic activity in order to get credit. Moreover, the student will be writing short paragraphs and compositions (about 150 words or more (typed doubled-spaced/12 font). No ed compositions will be accepted. In addition, the student has to study the assigned pages in UNIDOS textbook before coming to class and be prepared to participate actively by using new and recycled vocabulary in each lesson. Note, description of some assignments will be assigned in class (5%), and homework assigned online in MySpanishLab.com (15%). Homework 20% Quizzes: Quizzes are designed to ensure that you master the material step by step. There will be total two quizzes. At the end of every two chapters will be a quiz (Quiz No 1: Capítulos 9 & 10; Quiz No 2: Capítulos 11 & 12. The quizzes will be in a fill-in-the-blank format and include vocabulary, reading, listening, comprehension, grammar, writing short composition and culture. The dates for the quizzes are printed in bold in the calendar section of this syllabus (Note, pop-quizzes will be given without previous notice). Quizzes & pop-quizzes: 20%. Final Written Exam (*negotiable): It will be accumulative (Chapters 9 to 12). The format will be the same as the quizzes: Listening and comprehension, reading, writing short composition, questions about cultural insights, vocabulary and grammar (Note, There will be no make-up exams approved for this course. ) Final Exam: 20%. Final Oral Report (Festival de cultura hispana): Groups of students will prepare an oral presentation on different topics from Spanish speaking countries. Each student will be evaluated based on the following aspects: preparation, organization, clarity, visual materials, and enthusiasm. For this segment, more directions will be given in class. Oral report is scheduled for June 20 (last day of spring quarter 2015). Final oral report: 20%. Grading: Final grades will be based on class participation, attendance, homework, quizzes, and final written & oral report. Course grades will be based on the following: Attendance (10%) & Participation (10%): 20% Homework (MySpanishLab online 15% & assigned in class 5%): 20% 1 Assignments are subject to update by the instructor.
