2 2 Spa1102 Spring 14 COURSE DESCRIPTION Sra. Martha Zárate Office: Coleman 1151 Hours: 10:00-11:00 AM (M-T-R-F) and by appointment Phone: (217) Spanish students will continue gaining competence in the language and culture. They will rehearse language skills, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. As their understanding expands, they will further express their own views and feelings on a variety of topics related to everyday life. Their comprehension and communicative learning are monitored through class activities, worksheets and online activities. The course also aims to develop their intercultural awareness. Students will increase their knowledge of contemporary Spanish culture and society. I hope they enjoy this experience as they discover how to express themselves in Spanish. COURSE OBJECTIVES OUTCOMES In Spa 1102 students use vocabulary related to indoors and outdoors leisure activities. Also, they will talk where they live to describe home spaces. They will work in activities to demonstrate how to arrange the furniture of a bedroom in class activities. They will also learn about household chores, and will learn vocabulary about computers- electronics. They also will discuss historical events in the context of the past tense and imperfect tenses. Students in this level will learn the prepositions "por/para" and also how to read large numbers. They will use the direct and indirect pronouns as well as the double object pronouns in the sentence to avoid redundancy. In L6A students will learn about the vocabulary of traveling, vacation and vocabulary on geography. They will watch the film "The motorcycle diaries." Based on this film they will write a composition answering questions about the film. The second half of the semester focuses on the formal and informal commands as well as learning useful vocabulary about nature and the environment. During the final week they students will watch a Power Point about the EIU Conservation Program in conservation energy. Students will write about this topic related to the lesson on the environment. They are asked to write the final paragraph of this composition in Spanish. REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS Sol y viento, 3rd edition, Bill Van Patten. McGraw-Hill, You need a key to access the online exercises for the Workbook V. 2.The code to register for this course is NNGD476 (see instructions in D2L). The Centro activities are found using the URL GRADING SCALE = A = B = C = D = F
3 Participation, Preparation and Attendance 50 Spa1102 Spring Homework sets: 4A; 4B; 5A; 5B; 6A; 6B 10 x 6 = 60 Centros 5A;5B;6A;6B 10 x 4 = 40 In-class activities (one every week 1x15=15) 50 x 15 = 750 Exams; 4A; 4B; 5A; 5B; 6A; 6B 100 x 6 = 600 Compositions: Compo1 + Compo2 Total sum of points ======================== 20 x 2= 40 1,540 GRADED IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES Graded written activities are done in class and may NOT BE ANNOUNCED ahead of time. NO MAKE-UPS of these are offered, except with a valid excuse (a note from a Doctor, Nurse or School Couch.) There are fifteen (15) in-class activities total, one every week of the semester. Each In-Class activity is worth 20 points = 300 points total. ONLINE ACTIVITIES Students will access the website to complete assigned activities for each Lesson, and they are responsible for the online submission. The instructor will set up a dateline for completion. Students need to Register with the Centro Website, and use the Course Code NNGD476. There is a book-key Registration fee that they need to purchase. Instructions on how to register are posted in D2L site for this Course, under the folder "Centro." Students can also access the Sol y Viento Tutorials as instructed in class. HOMEWORK The first type of assignment is the Homework Set, usually due at the end of each lesson. Students will receive copies during class time. Dates when this homework needs to be submitted is in the daily schedule. These dates will also be announced in class. Do ONLY those activities specified by your instructor. The second type of assignment comes from their Text book or Work Sheets, the instructor does not collect these all the time, but the ones to be graded and added to their Grade Book records will be announced during class time. COMPOSITIONS
4 4 Spa1102 Spring 14 There are two compositions throughout this semester. The first one is a guided composition where students will answer simple questions about the characters, action, and places where the movie takes place. Students will watch it during class. Since the film is about traveling around different countries in Latin America, they will be asked to pay attention to the geographical sites as well the culture they will observe. The second composition is based on the presentation about the EIU Energy Conservation Program to bridge the topic on the environment and natural resources. This composition is in English and students are asked to write the conclusion paragraph in Spanish. Make sure to type your compositions at double space. EXAMS There are six (6) exams in this course. Exams are given during regular class periods, except the Final Exam 7 which is given during the WEEK OF FINALS, 5/5/14 (12:30-2:30 PM) For all the other regular exams, the exam is scheduled after the chapter lesson is finished. Also there is an approximate date in the daily schedule; however, it is possible that it changes depending on class demands and pace. No make up exams given except in exceptional and documented situations. ATTENDANCE Students are expected to follow the EIU official Calendar, to attend class regularly and to be prepared for 50 minute period of uninterrupted class instruction. It is recommeded to plan their traveling trips around the EIU Official Calendar. This is particularly valid in a foreign language class since a language is reinforced over time and regular doses. Active class participation is vital in learning a second language, and quite simply, students cannot participate if they are not in class. If students have a worthwhile reason to be absent, they are responsible for contacting the Instructor through D2L ( ). PARTICIPATION Class participation is essential to succeed in this class. In order to earn full participation points, students are encouraged to contribute with their answers during class activities, the assigned worksheets or with input from themselves or with other students during group activities. Also their volunteering work with the computer helps them with earning participation points. To increase opportunities to participate in class, students need to complete all work before classes' meetings. Some students get into the habit of arriving late to class or leaving early. Remember that students are not acting alone but in the atmosphere of a group. They will learn more in an environment of cooperation. Cell phones are not allowed during class time. See Cell phone policy below. CLASS ORGANIZATION Students will engage in activities that promote oral interaction in Spanish. They will receive a brief explanation of the most salient grammatical aspects of the lesson. To derive the utmost benefit from class time, they are encouraged to taking notes, asking questions, listening to words and to follow class explanations. Their listening and repeating words will become natural. Students can create their own opportunities to speak as well as to interact in Spanish with their instructor and classmates as well as, outside class whenever they have a chance. That is, if they know how to greet in Spanish, greet in Spanish; if they know how to ask for permission in Spanish, ask in Spanish. Students can foster the idea that they are able to use the language in a spontaneous manner. I also, will encourage them to ask questions during class time since most of the time these are beneficial to the whole group. LATE WORK
5 5 Spa1102 Spring2014 As a policy, no late work or make-up work will be considered without written documentation for your absence. Examples of written documentation include: a doctor s note, a note from your hospital or clinic, or a document relevant to the situation that caused your absence. Everyone is permitted one whoops during the course when students are allowed to hand in a late assignment without documentation. This can only happen once and does not apply to exams. CELL PHONE POLICY: Students are expected to have their cell phone ringers turned off during class time. The same policy applies to other devices such as translators. If students have emergencies, they can step-out of the room to receive/make the phone call. Students who send/ receive text messages obviously are distracted yet, they distract others and most importantly, disrupt the whole class.
Spending class entirely off-task (i.e. with headphones on, texting throughout class, or sleeping) will result in being counted absent.
