INTRODUCTION Ths specfcaton covers the requrements for applcaton of the Undercarpet Power System and s ntended as an ad to archtects, consultng engneers, buldng contractors, and electrcans. The Undercarpet Power System s a branch crcut wrng method per Artcle 324 of the 2002 Natonal Electrc Code. The wrng system ncludes, but s not necessarly restrcted to, the components lsted and shown n Fgure 1. The followng lst provdes a bref descrpton of the system components. Use these terms when correspondng wth Tyco Electroncs Representatves to facltate assstance. Transton Fttng: Box--type confguraton whch houses and protects the transton block assembly. Transton Block Assembly: Termnatng component desgned to make the transton from round conductors to flat conductors. Drect Connectng Receptacle: A low--profle duplex receptacle termnated drectly to the flat cable. 2 Floor Preparaton: A polyvnyl sheet 0.25 mm [.010 n.] thck, desgned to protect the cable from floor mosture, chemcal reacton, and abrason n slab--on--grade level applcatons. Flat Conductor Cable (FFC): Flat copper conductors between non--conductve lamnated polyvnylchlorde (pvc) wth polyester flm outer layer. Top Sheld: Steel sheet 0.25 mm [.010 n.] thck, placed over flat conductor cable to provde physcal protecton and an addtonal electrcal ground path. Tap Connector: Termnatng devce desgned to electrcally connect two flat conductor cables perpendcular to each other. Splce Connector: Termnatng devce desgned to electrcally connect two flat conductor cables to extend the cable length. Top Sheld Bondng Clp: Connector used to splce and tap the top sheld. Insulator Patch: Used to nsulate tap and splce connectors and protect exposed conductor ends or areas. 3 Undercarpet Cablng Systems (Layout and Plannng Manual) ncludes floor preparaton procedures, precautons and suggestons for proper layout technques, consderatons for economzng n materal and labor requrements, physcal and functonal descrptons of all components n each system, technques for preparng materal take--off lsts, and encapsulated nstallaton nstructons. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1. General Use all necessary care to avod damagng the components of the Undercarpet Power System before, durng, and after nstallaton and to protect the nstalled work and materals from all other trades. Pror to all work nvolvng the Undercarpet Power System, verfy that the work of all other trades s complete to the pont where ths nstallaton may properly commence. The tme for Undercarpet Power System nstallaton s just pror to carpet nstallaton. 1. In the event that the work of other trades s not complete, report the dscrepances to the engneer n charge. 2. Do not proceed wth nstallaton n areas of dscrepancy untl all dscrepances have been fully resolved Installaton A. Drawng Before the Undercarpet Power System s actually nstalled, a system layout drawng (contanng all elements of the crcut) should be made. B. Mountng the Transton Fttng/Transton Block Assembly Referrng to the system layout drawng, mount the transton fttng and transton block assembly at the specfed locaton, usng fasteners approprate for the type of fttng and the ste constructon encountered. Mountng detals are provded on the nstructon sheet packaged wth the fttng. C. Preparng the Floor S Uneven floors wth rregulartes must be leveled or patched. S Concrete slabs must have all holes flled and projectons removed to ensure a smooth surface. S Porous floors must be sealed and free from grease, ol, and mosture. S Clean floor thoroughly. Sweep and vacuum to remove all debrs. Mantan clean area throughout nstallaton. S Do not nstall Undercarpet System on or n wet areas where water or lquds wll be evdent. Tyco Electroncs does not warrant proper functons of nstallatons that are not nstalled n accordance wth precedng procedures. D. Markng the Floor Lay out the detals of the branch crcut wrng on the floor usng chalk lnes and the approprate symbols to ndcate the cable run, transton block assembly locatons, and tap ponts. It s recommended that necessary floor fttng anchor holes be drlled at ths tme so the floor may be cleared of debrs before layng the bottom sheld. E. Layng the Floor Preparaton It s mportant that the bottom sheld be nstalled on a clean, dry floor. Rev E Tyco Electroncs Corporaton 3 of 7

4 1. Startng at the transton fttng, lay the floor preparaton over the floor markng. Exercse cauton to keep the floor preparaton straght and smooth. 2. Cut the floor preparaton as necessary wth scssors. 3. Edge--tape the floor preparaton to the floor perodcally to hold t n place. 4. Follow the nstructons packaged wth the floor preparaton for nstallaton specfcs and recommendatons. F. Installng the FlatConductor Cable Cable nstallaton should start at the transton block assembly. Specfc nstructons are packaged wth the cable for all tasks n ths phase of the nstallaton. 1. Connect cable to fttng transton block assembly. 2. Center cable over floor preparaton and tape to the floor at the transton pont. 3. Proceed wth layng cable over floor preparaton man run and edge--tape cable to the bottom sheld every 1.8 to 3.7 m [6 to 12 ft.] to avod shftng. 4. To change the drecton of the cable run, fold the cable at rght or left angles over tself and press frmly to crease. No cuttng s requred. Corners should be centered on the floor preparaton and taped. 5. If the cable length s nsuffcent to complete the layout, splce the connectors to another cable to obtan the specfed cable length. a. Mantan conductor sze, confguraton, and polarty. b. Trm cable ends square. c. Allow a maxmum of 3.18 mm [.125 n.] between cable ends to be splced. d. Termnate the splce connector wth a Tyco Electroncs Hand Tool. Install an nsulator kt over the splce connectors. e. Edge--tape the cable n poston after nstallng nsulator kt. 6. Lay tap crcuts perpendcular to the man run. a. Trm tap cable end square. b. Allow a maxmum of 3.18 mm [.125 n.] separaton. c. Termnate the tap connector wth a Tyco Electroncs Hand Tool. Install an nsulator kt over the tap connectors. d. Tape tap crcut cable n poston, centered over the bottom sheld. e. To change the drecton of the tap crcut cable, fold cable at a rght angle over tself and press frmly to crease. Corners should be centered on the bottom sheld and taped. f. Where the tap crcut cable dead--ends at a floor fttng, trm the cable so that the squared end does not extend past the anchor screws by more than 12.7 mm [.500 n.]. 7. Apply connector patches. a. Care shall be taken when applyng the patches to ensure that a proper envronmentally sound seal s made. b. Patches are to be nstalled over splces, taps, and untermnated cable ends. G. Installng Floor Fttngs In applcatons where floor fttngs must be nstalled after cables are lad, edge tape both cable edges to the floor for a length of 0.6 m [2 ft.]. Wth the floor fttng centered across and between the taped edges, nstall the floor fttng as nstructed n Paragraph 3.2.D. Sweep and vacuum to remove all debrs pror to the tape removal and floor fttng nstallaton. Tape should partally overlap the flat conductor cable, bottom sheld, and the floor. Protectve tape prevents debrs from gettng under the cable and bottom sheld whle drllng the anchor holes. 4 of 7 Tyco Electroncs Corporaton Rev E

5 H. Installng Top Sheld 1. Begn layng the top sheld man run at the transton fttng. a. Proceed to lay the top sheld over the man runs, cross--tapng t every 1.8 to 3.7 m [6 to 12 ft.]. b. When layng the sheld over the tap crcuts, or when t s necessary to extend the length of the sheld, overlap the sheld 152 to 203 mm [6 to 8 n.] and place a pece of electrcal tape on the flat conductor cable at the pont where the lower pece of sheld edge contacts the cable. 2. Splce and tap the sheld, usng the top sheld bondng clps. 3. Termnate the top sheld to the fttngs and transton block assembles. 4. After nstallaton of top sheld, conduct an electrcal check to ensure there are no shorts between the hot, neutral, and ground. 5. Edge tape top sheld to floor, along the complete nstalled cable run. I. Drect Connectng Receptacle (DCR) Installaton 1. DCR electrcal fttng nstallaton should begn after all debrs has been removed from nstallaton of the DCR mountng base plate and after the top sheld has been nstalled. Instructons for nstallng DCR fttngs are packaged wth the DCR assembly. 2. Perform an electrcal contnuty check of the hot, neutral, and ground crcuts. 3. Install DCR cover fttng. J. Connectng Source Power 1. Instructons for connectng source power are packaged wth the transton fttng block assembly covers. 2. Recommended mnmum sze of nterconnectng wre s 12 AWG copper for 12 AWG flat cable and 10 AWG copper for 10 AWG flat cable. 3. Match color--coded round conductors to color--coded flat conductors. 4. A ground wre shall be connected from the ground bndng screw on the transton block assembly to the ground termnal on or n the wall and floor electrcal boxes or any other transton fttng. 5. After the source power s connected, place a pece of electrcal tape over the top sheld edge and nstall the transton fttng cover. 6. Apply power to the system and check the output of each receptacle for voltage and polarty. K. Installng Carpet Squares 1. Coordnate work wth electrcal trades to ensure that electrcal power s removed from flat conductor cable crcuts whle carpet s beng nstalled. 2. When cuttng carpet to ft, t s mportant that a barrer be placed between the carpet and the cable to avod accdentally cuttng the cable. 3. Place carpet squares drectly over nstalled top sheld. 4. Cut and ft carpet to ft over or around nstalled fttngs Materals Cable: Factory lamnated, abrason resstant, color--coded, flat conductor cable. Top Sheld: Corroson--resstant, cold rolled steel strp. Floor Preparaton: Yellow--colored, plastczed pvc sheet. Rev E Tyco Electroncs Corporaton 5 of 7

6 Transton Fttngs: Znc--plated carbon steel, AISI type Transton Block Assembles: R--10 RYTON molded blocks wth assocated nsulators and hardware. Tap and Splce Cable Connectors and Top Sheld Bondng Clps: Copper alloy. Floor Fttng Covers: Plastc moldng compound. Transton Fttng Covers: Alumnum alloy, type Accessores Spray adhesve and hold--down tape are used to attach the top sheld to the floor surface. 4. QUALIFICATION 4.1. Underwrters Laboratores Inc. (UL) Undercarpet Power cable s Lsted n UL Fle Number E73212 and the fttngs are Lsted n UL Fle Number E73213 (per CSA Internatonal test methods) CSA Internatonal Undercarpet Power System s Certfed to CSA Internatonal Fle Number C22.2 No TOOLING Undercarpet Hand Tool s desgned to termnate tap and splce connectors onto undercarpet power cables. 7 6. VISUAL AID Fgure 3 shows a typcal applcaton of an Undercarpet Power System. Ths llustraton should be used by nstallaton personnel to ensure a correctly appled product.
