KERDI-BOARD gves tle setters more control over ther projects by provdng them wth the means to smply and easly create deal substrates for tle. Unsutable substrates can be remeded and new substrates can be created whle keepng the techncal and aesthetc requrements of the tle coverng n mnd. Ths can requre comprehensve preparaton and waterproofng measures. KERDI-BOARD makes t easy to create an deal substrate for tle nstallaton over exstng structures as dverse as masonry, wood or metal framng, and mxed/exstng substrates n renovaton projects. The followng pages explan a varety of ndvdual applcaton areas n greater detal. 3

4 Ideal tle substrate over masonry or exstng/mxed substrates Uneven substrates Installng tles usng the thn-set method requres substrates to be clean and even. Masonry walls and exstng/mxed substrates are often unsutable substrates for drect applcaton of tle because they can be uneven or dffcult to bond to. KERDI-BOARD s deal for nstallaton on: Concrete Masonry of all knds Exstng substrates such as plaster, tles, panted surfaces, etc. Mxed substrates Dependng on the condton of the exstng wall areas, KERDI-BOARD can be ether fully embedded n thn-set mortar or spotbonded. Spot-bondng the panels wth thn-set mortar allows for adjustment to acheve plumb wall surfaces. KERDI-BOARD can be nstalled vertcally as well as horzontally. Where wall surfaces wll not accept a bond to thn-set mortar, KERDI-BOARD can be further attached wth the help of the specal anchors ncluded n our hardware assortment. n bonded waterproofng assembles KERDI-BOARD s sutable for use n bonded waterproofng assembles. For ths purpose, the corners and jonts must be sealed wth Schluter -KERDI-BAND usng unmodfed thn-set mortar. Fastener penetratons may be sealed wth KERDI-BAND usng unmodfed thn-set mortar. Other protrusons through the KERDI-BOARD (e.g., showerhead, tub spout, etc.) must be treated wth Schluter -KERDI-SEAL-PS seals or Schluter -KERDI-FIX. Sutable panel thcknesses of If the substrate s suffcently even to allow for fully embeddng the panels n thnset mortar, panel thcknesses from 3/16" (5 mm) can be selected. If the panels are to be spot-bonded, thcknesses of 3/8" (9 mm) or more are requred, dependng on specfc project requrements. 6 Ideal tle substrate over stud frame structures Wood or metal framng Stud framng s typcally covered wth gypsum board. Often, the trades that hang the gypsum board do not take the tme to ensure that the fnshed surfaces are plumb wth square corners. Furthermore, gypsum board panels requre addtonal prep, such as waterproofng, pror to settng tle n wet areas. KERDI-BOARD s quck and easy to nstall as a substrate for tle coverngs over wood or metal framng, usng the screws and washers ncluded n our hardware assortment. Panel jonts are to be located on the studs or other sold backng. KERDI-BOARD can be nstalled vertcally as well as horzontally. Tles can be nstalled wth thn-set mortar mmedately after the proper attachment of KERDI-BOARD; no addtonal prep s requred. n bonded waterproofng assembles KERDI-BOARD s sutable for use n bonded waterproofng assembles. The constructon of such walls usng masonry blocks or stud framng wth sheathng s tme-consumng and often requres further preparaton before tlng can begn. Sutable panel thcknesses of KERDI-BOARD can be used to quckly and smply create stable and self-supportng partton walls for tlng. If requred, the partton walls can be further attached or stablzed wth the angled and U-shaped profles, whch form part of the complete system. The abuttng seams and jonts must be flled wth thn-set mortar. Stanless steel profles can be used to cover the vsble areas. KERDI-BOARD s deally suted to create anythng from smple parttons to entre tolet and shower facltes or publc changng rooms. Sutable panel thcknesses of Dependng on project requrements, panel thcknesses of 2" (50 mm) should be used for self-supportng partton walls. 8 Showers and bathtub surrounds made wth Ideal tle substrate Tled showers and bathtub surrounds requre proper mosture management to ensure successful long-term performance. Whle cement backerboards are mostureresstant, they are not waterproof. Thus, addtonal measures must be taken to protect wall cavtes from water and vapor penetraton. In addton to beng lghtweght and easy to cut wth a utlty knfe, KERDI-BOARD s nherently waterproof and vapor-retardant. When used n conjuncton wth the Schluter -Shower System, KERDI-BOARD provdes an ntegrated tle backng and mosture management system for tled showers and bathtub surrounds. n bonded waterproofng assembles KERDI-BOARD s sutable for use n bonded waterproofng assembles. For ths purpose, the corners and jonts must be sealed wth KERDI-BAND usng unmodfed thn-set mortar. Fastener penetratons may be sealed wth KERDI-BAND usng unmodfed thn-set mortar. However, tle setters are often faced wth substandard framng, partcularly on new constructon projects. Many of the materals used to buld the platforms are mosture-senstve and requre addtonal preparaton pror to settng tle. KERDI-BOARD can be used to quckly and smply create flat, level, plumb, square, and waterproof tub platforms. The grooved versons of the panel and the easy cuttng propertes of KERDI-BOARD also allow for effectve use n creatng curved surfaces. n bonded waterproofng assembles KERDI-BOARD s sutable for use n bonded waterproofng assembles. For ths purpose, the corners and jonts must be sealed wth KERDI-BAND, usng unmodfed thnset mortar. Fastener penetratons may be sealed wth KERDI-BAND usng unmodfed thn-set mortar. Usng KERDI-BOARD as a buldng panel makes t possble to quckly and easly buld the vanty structure wth the techncal and aesthetc requrements of the tle coverng n mnd. KERDI-BOARD s dmensonally stable and waterproof. Panels and openngs are easly cut wth a utlty knfe. The vsble edges can be fnshed n a number of ways, ncludng: Brushed stanless steel U-shaped profles n combnaton wth the Schluter -RONDEC or Schluter -QUADEC fnshng profles Schluter -RONDEC-CT or Schluter - RONDEC-STEP edge profles Tle strps and two fnshng profles such as RONDEC or QUADEC Sutable panel thcknesses of Select the panel thckness accordng to the sze and expected stresses of the project. 2" (50 mm)-thck boards are sutable for buldng the structure, whle 3/4" (19 mm)-thck boards can typcally be used for shelvng. Addtonal work s requred to prepare the surface for tle nstallaton, whch can be tme-consumng. KERDI-BOARD s partcularly sutable for buldng countertops and other work surfaces wth tle coverngs. KERDI-BOARD s dmensonally stable and waterproof and can be adhered drectly to base cabnets, thus elmnatng the need for labor-ntensve preparaton. Panels and openngs are easly cut wth a utlty knfe. The snk ral can be created n a number of ways, ncludng: Brushed stanless steel U-shaped profles n combnaton wth the RONDEC or QUADEC fnshng profles RONDEC-CT or RONDEC-STEP edge profles Tle strps and two fnshng profles such as RONDEC or QUADEC Sutable panel thcknesses of Panel thcknesses of 1-1/2" (38 mm) or 2" (50 mm) are recommended when adherng KERDI-BOARD drectly to base cabnets. 11

12 Ppe and column coverngs made of Schluter -KERDI- BOARD Ideal tle substrate The nnovatve, prefabrcated L-shaped and U-shaped panels of the KERDI-BOARD system make t especally easy to conceal ppes and columns. The panels feature V-shaped grooves and are shpped n a space-savng flat desgn, whch makes them easy to store. The flat panels are also quck to cut to the necessary dmensons. Thn-set mortar, KERDI-FIX, or double-sded adhesve tape s appled to the V-grooves. Fold the panels pror to nstallaton. The panel allows for quck and easy creaton of: Self-supportng partton walls (e.g., for multple shower cubcles) Tub surrounds Coverngs for support structures and columns Coverngs for ppes and duct work Wall coverngs If the grooved surface ponts toward the nsde, t s recommended that the grooves be flled wth thn-set mortar pror to nstallaton. If a larger expanse of panels s requred, several panels can be connected along the edges wth thn-set mortar, KERDI-FIX adhesve, or double-sded adhesve tape.
