2 Main Purpose The leadership and management of all aspects of secondary education delivery within the Cairo English School (CES). To Whom Responsible The Headmaster Key Tasks The Head of Secondary School is expected to lead by example and by design, making sure all staff are held accountable for what is expected of them and that their successes are celebrated. He/she will be required to provide leadership and supervision of teaching and learning to ensure academic achievement is realised, is thoroughly documented and reported, with intervention strategies put in place as required to support and enrich student learning. The Head of Secondary School will ensure teacher and support staff appraisals inform professional learning opportunities and build both capacity and competence within the school. The Head of Secondary School is expected to work collegially with the Headmaster, Educational Services Overseas Limited (ESOL), the other Heads of School at CES and the Secondary School Deputy Heads to ensure the school s Guiding Statements and outstanding educational programmes are implemented comprehensively and creatively, and all accreditation standards are met. ESOL s overarching vision is to provide outstanding education to students in international communities, instilling the knowledge, skills and character necessary for success in the 21st century. CES s role is to build on the successes of previous years and to further embed these into the life of the school. page 2
3 Background Located in New Cairo, the school opened in 2006 and now has over 1400 students from the ages of 3 to 18, with over 300 of those students in the Secondary School. The school is situated on a purpose - built modern campus in this rapidly growing area. The campus includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool, 400 metre running track, football fields, an indoor air-conditioned gymnasium and modern classrooms including fully equipped science labs and ICT suites. The School s mission is: To nurture a globally- minded community of learners who demonstrate high levels of achievement in the National Curriculum of England and other recognized International Programmes of Study. CES believes in Together Achieving Personal Excellence and being BETTER THAN BEFORE in everything that they do. Cairo English School is a vibrant and dynamic school where learning and student achievement are reinforcing the school s reputation for excellence in education in Cairo in particular and in Egypt as a whole. CES offers a full Foundation Stage-Year 12 English-based international curriculum, taught in English by a highly skilled staff of qualified and experienced teachers. In Years 9 and 10, CES students complete the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). The school introduced the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) in 2010 for students in Years 11 and 12, and graduated its first cohort of IB DP students in June The curriculum is designed to prepare students for entry into highly competitive Colleges and Universities in the United Kingdom, mainland Europe, North America, the Middle East, and elsewhere. CES is structured organisationally into an early years (FS1 Yr1), Primary (Yr2 Yr6), and Secondary School (Yr7 onwards), each with a Head and Deputy Head. CES is part of Educational Services Overseas Limited (ESOL), a group of eight American and British schools spanning four countries and three continents. 4 JOB DESCRIPTION The responsibilities and expected outcomes of the Head of Secondary at the Cairo English School will be to: Leadership Build, communicate and implement a shared vision which is understood and acted upon effectively by all and ensure the Guiding Statements of the school are a tangible reality in everyday work Inspire the highest standards of teaching and learning. Develop and manage the growth of the Secondary School. Ensure all professionals in the school work effectively within teams. Ensure all staff are held accountable for what is expected of them and celebrated for their successes. Use ICT innovatively to inspire and bring about improvement. Lead, support and develop staff using a variety of informal and formal strategies to enable outstanding educational programmes to be implemented creatively throughout the Secondary School. Management and Accountability Produce and implement clear, evidence based improvement plans and policies. Ensure accreditation standards are met and improve the quality of education for all students. Develop and maintain effective strategies and procedures for teacher and support staff appraisals, to inform staff development. Work with the Headmaster and Educational Services Overseas Limited (ESOL) by providing information, objective advice and support to ensure targets are met. Ensure academic achievement is attained, thoroughly documented and reported, with intervention strategies implemented as required to support and enrich student learning. Engage the school in systematic and rigorous selfevaluation processes. Use a rich set of data to understand the strengths and areas for improvement across the school. Manage change positively. Support a collaborative culture within the school and engage with others to build effective learning communities both in and outside the school. Foster good links with parents, carers, the community, and the international community to enhance and enrich the school and its value to the community. Collaborate with others in providing for the academic, moral, social, emotional, physical and cultural well-being of students and their families. page 4
5 Leading Teaching and Learning Use data and benchmarks to monitor progress in each child s/student s learning, implementing appropriate strategies to raise achievement. Ensure that learning is at the centre of teacher planning. Organise and implement a diverse, flexible, integrated curriculum and an effective assessment framework. Monitor, evaluate and review classroom practice, challenging underperformance at all levels, and promoting improvement strategies. Implement strategies that build capacity and competence within the school, ensuring teachers work in teams with a common purpose. Develop a creative, responsive and effective approach to learning and teaching. Inspire others to flourish. Take a strategic role in the development of new and emerging technologies and extend the learning experiences of students. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing to a wide variety of audiences and in a variety of settings To carry out the above duties, the school is seeking to appoint an experienced and highly committed professional. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential requirements: A well- qualified Graduate. A relevant teaching qualification. An excellent track record of teaching and learning. Dedicated to excellence in education. Knowledge of and recent and relevant experience of the English National Curriculum (IGCSEs and A-Levels) and of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Proven ability to lead, inspire and motivate staff and students alike. An understanding and/or experience of working in an international setting in more than one school. Able to lead curriculum development. Passionate about learning and teaching and committed to developing the true potential of all children from a wide range of backgrounds. An exemplary role model with strong leadership and organisational skills. Works collaboratively and supportively with colleagues within the school. The ability to ensure good student progress through an effective assessment regimen that assesses for learning, as learning, and makes assessments of learning. Willing to work within the school procedures, processes and to meet required standards for the role. Committed to continual personal and professional development. Is reflective and learns from past experience. Experience of Timetabling. Interested in innovating with ICT, competent in the use of ICT and software/hardware based teaching resources. Highly motivated, enthusiastic and an exceptional communicator. page 5
6 Desirable criteria: NPQH or similar advanced/additional qualifications. Conscientious, committed, resilient, imaginative, flexible and a lifelong learner. Willing to share expertise and grow with the school. Resilient and demonstrates ability to work well under pressure. Manages time effectively. A good administrator and record keeper. Punctual. Preferably UK trained with up to date experience of teaching the English National Curriculum at secondary level. Experience of leading teaching and learning in international settings. Experienced in using enquiry- based methods, interactive and student centred lessons. Demonstrated experience of adapting to change/new Educational initiatives. REMUNERATION PACKAGE Successful candidates will be offered a fixed term contract of two years in the first instance.
