2 BACKGROUND Analysis of environmental parameters is a vital part of most water laboratory operations. Historically, no relevant proficiency testing programs were available for nutrient and carbon analyses at environmental levels. The Environmental Nutrient Collaborative Trials (ENCT) committee, formerly the National Low-Level Nutrient Collaborative Trial (NLLNCT) committee was established to meet this need in The committee was, and in fact still is, formed by unpaid volunteers interested in the quality of data produced by laboratories analysing environmental type samples. Eighteen trials using freshwater and seawater matrices have been conducted to date. Substantial improvement in the quality of data from participants has been observed over the course of these trials. Detailed questionnaires included in the trials have enabled the comparison of different methods and instrumentation. The ENCT offers 13 different parameters in various matrices, encompassing samples taken from pristine and impacted sites in freshwater and seawater environments. After the initial data is collated from each trial, excess ENCT samples are available as Certified Reference Materials. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Managers of agencies responsible for the adoption of legislation based on Australian Standards and ANZECC guidelines. Environmental analysts involved in the analysis of nitrogen, Ammonia, phosphorus, silica, carbon and anions in water. Past and present participants of the ENCT.
