1 PETERS TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT CORE BODY OF KNOWLEDGE SPANISH I GRADES 9-12 For each of the sections that follow, students may be required to analyze, recall, explain, interpret, apply, or evaluate the particular concepts being taught. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Level I course is a full-year course, which introduces students to the study of World Language and culture. The basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing will be taught and practiced with emphasis on student performance in both grammar and vocabulary. Various aspects of the culture of Spanish-speaking people will be introduced and discussed. This course may NOT be retaken if a grade of C or above was already achieved in a Level I course, or its equivalent, at another school. This course may only be taken twice without successful completion. STUDY SKILLS Students will define review and new vocabulary terms in thematic topics. They will work to apply these terms in context in a variety of settings. Vocabulary lists, practice quizzes, and online tools will be provided for review and practice, but students should also review these terms on their own. Students will apply vocabulary in class through listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. Students will be assessed through in-class activities, quizzes, tests and performance tasks. Students will learn review and new grammar topics. They will work to apply these in context in a variety of settings. Grammar explanations, note sheets, PowerPoints, homework assignments, and online tools will be provided for review and practice, but students may need to spend additional time outside of class reviewing these structures and their application. Students will apply these grammatical topics in class through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. Students will be assessed through in-class activities, quizzes, tests and performance tasks. Students will learn about a variety of relevant cultural topics. Students may be asked to research certain topics to achieve a greater level of understanding of Spanishspeaking people and their culture. Students will be assessed on cultural topics through tests, quizzes, projects, web quests, and essays. Students will need to compare cultural products, practices, and structure/function of language from Spanish-speaking countries with that of their own.
