1 SPANISH 2020: INTERMEDIATE GRAMMAR AND CONVERSATION Southern Utah University Department of Foreign Languages and Philosophy Spring 2014 Professor: Dr. Iliana Portaro Office: GC 009D Office Hours: Mondays (1-2 p.m., 3-6 p.m.), Tuesdays (12-1 p.m.) COURSE DESCRIPTION Bienvenidos a Español 2020! This course is a continuation of Spanish 2010 with an emphasis on strengthening language skills and developing cultural competency. Our objective is to reinforce the material introduced in Spanish and review major grammatical structures and vocabulary. Meeting Times & Location: MTWR 11-11:50 a.m. (GC 305) Prerequisite: Spanish 2010 or equivalent. Students who are unsure of their level should consult one of the Spanish professors for proper placement. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The outcomes below will be achieved through a development of the four major skill areas for language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Upon completion of Spanish 2020, students will have an intermediate level of proficiency and will: Be able to generate and exchange ideas in Spanish, as well as narrate, describe, persuade, and elicit information. Demonstrate comprehension of authentic spoken and simple written discourse Effectively communicate with sufficient accuracy to be understood by native-speakers Be able to produce clear and coherent simple prose Be able to read and extract meaning of a variety of authentic printed materials Will gain a deeper understanding of Hispanic cultures and demonstrate a cultural awareness of customs, geography, and differences/commonalities of traditions and dialects. This course also targets the following SUU learning outcomes: Gain knowledge of human cultures Gain intellectual and practical skills, particularly in written and oral communication Gain personal and social responsibility, particularly intercultural knowledge and competence REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS Facetas. There are NO make-ups and extra time will not be given if you are late to class. The use of notes, dictionaries, textbooks, or other materials is not permitted. Final Exam There will be a cumulative take-home exam and an in-class presentation. Further instructions will be given during the semester. Compositions There will a series of compositions throughout the semester. Composition themes will be given and written during class. You will have the opportunity to revise and rewrite them to improve your grade. Daily Homework Homework will be assigned daily and it is due at the beginning of class. Homework is closely related to daily participation, since in many cases you will not be able to fully participate without having completed the previous evening s assignment. Studying the grammar and vocabulary specified in the syllabus is extremely necessary. It is your responsibility to study before coming to class. 21% 20% If it s an assignment from the Student Activities Manual, then you must tear the corresponding sheet. Unless, it is an assignment from the textbook, handwritten homework is not accepted. Please buy the workbook or make copies. Incomplete assignments will not be graded. Lab Activities Lab Activities (listening exercises) are due at the end of each chapter and on exam days. It is your responsibility to do these at your own pace before they are due. Quizzes These will be given throughout the semester. They will be very similar to the exam questions. There are NO make-ups and scores cannot be dropped.

3 Engagement You are required to attend 3 outside events hosted by the Department of Foreign Languages and Philosophy. Your choices are the Spanish Conversation Tables (GC104), tutoring (GC 104), and the Spanish Film Series. 9% Attendance This grade will be based on your attitude, effort and quality of participation in class. Sleeping, texting, tardiness, and frequent absences will affect your grade. All students are expected to attend class and arrive on time. Also, this class requires interaction with your peers. I expect you to work with your partners and/or groups daily. You may miss 3 classes (no explanations needed). Afterwards, one percentage point will be deducted from your final grade for each additional absence. If you have more than 5 absences, you will lose the for participation in addition to the points deducted from your final grade. Remember, you cannot participate if you are not in class (mentally/physically) and thus I cannot give you a grade! COURSE POLICIES Attendance and punctuality are extremely important. All students are expected to attend class and arrive on time. Absence from class will affect your grade, as will tardiness, early departures, and regularly entering and leaving the room while class is in session. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed in class. If you know you will be absent or late, contact me to make any necessary arrangements. INCOMPLETE AND/OR LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Please do not put assignments underneath my office door or in my mailbox without permission. If you plan to be absent, your work must be turned in beforehand. Make prior arrangements. Class preparation is EXTREMELY important to get a good grade and learn Spanish. I expect you to do your homework and reading daily. During class, you should listen, engage in discussions, take notes and make an effort to speak in Spanish. Come prepared - bring your textbooks and dictionaries to class. Learning a foreign language requires time, effort and practice. Active participants will do very well in this class. You may have to step out of your comfort zone and take a few risks. Be patient with yourself and others. Learning a foreign language is supposed to be challenging. Cell Phones, headphones and other electronic devices are not allowed in the classroom unless I know why you are using them. Texting, browsing the Internet, twittering, updating your Facebook status and/or answering/receiving phone calls during class is disrespectful to your fellow classmates and me. Be courteous and limit your technology use to relevant materials that will enhance your learning experience.

4 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Scholastic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. You are expected to have read and understood the current issue of the student handbook (published by Student Services) regarding student responsibilities and rights, and the intellectual property policy, for information about procedures and about what constitutes acceptable on-campus behavior.
