1 SUMMER 2013 Elementary Spanish XL 2/Units: 4 / Reg#: Z1759 SATURDAYS: 9:00 am 1:00 pm.: June 29 th Sept. 14 th (11 mtgs/no mtg 08/31) UCLA: Room 162 Dodd Hall Instructor: Emilia Chuquin, PhD. Required Texts: Mosaicos: Spanish as a World Language (Castells et al.), 5 th Edition Mosaicos: Student Activities Manual-SAM (Electronic) in MySpanishLab. Course ID: CRSKL7E (to register in MySpanishLab) Text Material Covered: Spanish XL 2: Capítulo 5 through Capítulo 10 Course Description Elementary Spanish XL 2 is the second of a three-quarter series (Spanish 1, 2, 3) of beginning in Spanish language and culture (first year college-level Spanish). The Communicative Language Teaching Approach method will be used in this course. It will develop linguistic fluency in an interactive way. Therefore, this class will be centered in helping students to develop communicative competence in all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. These activities also will give an opportunity for student to practice grammatical structures, acquire vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and to build up cultural insights in an analytical manner by examining information, events and ideas from a broader perspective. Objectives The objectives of XL 2 are to develop linguistic fluency and attain proficiency in all four communicative skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The main objective is to teach how to narrate past events and acquire abilities by using regular and irregular verbs in preterit and imperfect tenses, past perfect and participles used as adjectives, using command forms, comparing people and things, building direct and indirect objects, talking about careers, occupations and future tense. Many interactive class conversational activities such as discussion, and role-plays, debates, brainstorms, oral reports and songs will help to build a basic conversational vocabulary and idiomatic expressions in Spanish. Spanish XL 2 will be conducted entirely in Spanish. Attendance and Active Participation: It is strongly recommended that you attend all scheduled classes to develop your language skills, and you are expected to arrive on time and not to leave from class before the session ends, you will have an absence for that day. In an interactive language class where classroom work is an essential component of the course, excessive absenteeism is unacceptable. The classroom is the primary environment in which you will be exposed to Spanish language. These cannot be made up! In case of family/medical emergency, please contact Jenny Polutan or your instructor. Class participation means completing assignments/preparing the reading materials (Mosaicos-textbook) before class and participating in class activities/discussions by asking and answering questions and participating in role-play or pair activities. You must come well prepared to class and always use Spanish, use new and recycled vocabulary, make positive contribution to class and have respect and positive attitude toward your classmates and instructor. Important: Cell phones and other electronics should be turned off or set to silent. NO chewing gum is accepted in class (see Student Conduct Notices). Attendance: 10%; class participation: 10%. Total: 20%.

Moreover, the student will be writing short paragraphs and compositions (about 100 words, typed doubled-spaced/or more than half page/12 font) in the present, past and future tenses. In addition, the student has to study the assigned pages in Mosaicos and listen to assigned CD track before coming to class and be prepared to participate actively by using new vocabulary in each lesson. Note, some homework will be assigned in class. Homework online & assigned in class: 20%. Quizzes: Quizzes are designed to ensure that you master the material step by step. At the end of every two chapters will be a quiz (Quiz No 1: Capítulos 5 & 6; Quiz No 2: Capítulos 7 & 8; Quiz No 3: Capítulos 9 & 10). The quizzes will be in a fill-in-the-blank format and include vocabulary, reading and oral comprehension, grammar, short composition and questions about cultural insights will be included.
