Flores, Suite 200 San Antonio, Texas (210) Dear Friend of the NVOP: It is my pleasure to invite you to join us as a sponsor for the 40 th Anniversary Luncheon commemorating the four decades of service by the American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program (NVOP). This special event will take place at the Downtown Crowne Plaza Hotel in San Antonio, Texas on Friday, March 23, It s amazing to me, that ago as a young veteran of the Vietnam era, I joined the American GI Forum to help launch a very unique program of its time; The National Veterans Outreach Program. It was 1972, a very difficult time for our nation, especially for the young veterans returning from the war in Vietnam, only to find that they were not welcomed back as patriots. With the exception of immediate family members who received them, the veterans felt lost, defeated, some were angry, and some just suffered in silence with the depression, guilt, and confusion of having served in many traumatic events which no one back at home could understand. Reminiscent of a time after World War II, when Hispanic veterans had not been welcomed back as they expected, the American GI Forum was driven to mobilizea grassroots outreach effort seeking these Vietnam veterans. They created a special program called the Veterans Outreach Program with a simple formula of offering a helping hand from other Vietnam era veterans, and the concept met with resounding success! Today, after having served over 450,000 veterans, the NVOP is fully engaged in providing a full array of services to Veterans of all eras, especially the recently discharged Veterans of the Iraq- Afghanistan Wars. The NVOP, considered by many as one of the premier community- based organizations in the country, has evolved into a comprehensive system that includes employment assistance, job training, counseling, transitional and permanent housing,housing for the elderly,sheltered workshops for the disabled, services for homeless veterans, and economic development projects to create jobs. We are inviting some outstanding national and state dignitaries to headline this event, and It would be an honor for us to have you as a major co- sponsor of the Luncheon.
