For 40 years, the Education Law Center has advocated for the most vulnerable students children living in poverty, children of color, those in the foster care and juvenile justice systems, children with disabilities, English language learners, and children experiencing homelessness. Sponsoring our 40th Anniversary Celebration will show your commitment to fair public education funding, equal access for all students, and dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline. 5 PHILADELPHIA T F PITTSBURGH 429 Fourth Ave, Suite 702 Pittsburgh, PA T F The Education Law Center s mission is to ensure that all of Pennsylvania s children have access to a quality public education, including children living in poverty, children of color, children with disabilities, children in the foster care and juvenile justice systems, children learning English, and children experiencing homelessness. FIGHTING FOR FAIR SCHOOL FUNDING OUR PRIORITIES Money matters in education. It allows schools to have the resources they need to serve the most vulnerable children. Pennsylvania is one of only three states that does not use a statewide formula to drive education funding. As a result, the quality of a child s education too often depends on his or her zip code. The Education Law Center has long been a statewide leader for more adequate and equitable school funding. We will continue to lead the fight for fair school funding and close the opportunity gap between students in wealthy and poor school districts. ENSURING EQUAL ACCESS Ensuring equal access for all students is central to ELC s historic and current work. Most recently, our advocacy efforts have included: establishing fair residency rules for children in foster care or experiencing homelessness; ensuring the full inclusion of students with disabilities in education; breaking down barriers for English language learners; and promoting access to education for children in residential placements. STOPPING THE SCHOOL TO PRISON PIPELINE Zero-tolerance policies, aggressive policing in schools, and other extreme school discipline practices lead to high rates of suspensions, expulsions, and arrests of students. As a result, large numbers of youth are pushed out of school and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. These policies and practices also fuel systemic inequalities and disparate educational outcomes based on race, gender, perceived sexual orientation, disability status, and other categories. We advocate for fairness in school discipline. We work to eliminate zero tolerance policies, reduce exclusionary discipline, and promote positive interventions and supports for all students to stay and succeed in school. For more information, please contact Spencer Malloy, smalloy@elc-pa.org, x 312. Ensuring that all of Pennsylvania s children have equal access to a quality public education.
