1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Reporting To: Salary: Contract: Job summary: Job content: Deputy Learning Support Unit Nurse Unit Nurse and Learning Support Manager (Operations) Spine Point ,840-29,211 pro rata 35 hours a week, 37 weeks per annum To assist and deputise for the College Nurse in assessing the nursing needs of young people and adults with disabilities and to co-ordinate and implement programmes of care to address the assessed needs. Main duties 1. To deputise for the College Nurse carrying out all daily duties to meet student needs and coordinating all aspects of care whilst the College nurse is off site or in clinics / meetings. 2. To co-ordinate the care of students to meet assessed needs in partnership with the College Nurse. 3. Under the guidance of the College Nurse, provide day-to-day nursing intervention to address the needs of all students in college. 4. To comply with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Guidelines for Record Keeping alongside educational guidelines. 5. To be familiar with and follow all aspects and elements of Safeguarding and keeping young people in education, safe. 6. To report to the College Nurse any concerns regarding individual students and their health and welfare. 7. To attend any mandatory training as designated and approved by the College Nurse and the Learning Support Manager. 8. To support the College nurse in delivering training to the LSA team on all aspects of student care (to include manual handling). 9. To undertake risk assessments for students who require manual handling. 10. Under the guidance of the College Nurse, to liaise with nursing colleagues in other special schools. 11. To abide by policy and operational procedures requirements designated by the School Nursing Team and Community Nursing Team.
2 12. To direct the Health Care Assistant with regard to daily care activities, under the supervision of the College Nurse. Communication 13. To use specialist skills to communicate with children with disabilities. 14. In partnership with the College Nurse, parents/carers, teachers and governors, offer health promotion to all students in 1-1 and/or group sessions 15. To assist the College Nurse in liaising with Community Teams and other members of the multidisciplinary health team in arranging and participating in relevant college clinic sessions. 16. To support the College Nurse in providing advice and support to parents and carers on health related issues concerning their young person. 17. To assist the College Nurse in giving advice, guidance and training to college personnel, enabling them to carry out functions routinely undertaken by the parents in the home and with the students when in college. 18. To work under the guidance of the College Nurse in communicating effectively with college staff concerning the health and other related issues of identified students. Responsibility for student care 19. To assist the College Nurse in developing programmes of care based on the assessed care plan. 20. To refer to other professionals where appropriate and under the direction of the College Nurse. 21. To work alongside the College Nurse in producing, maintaining and evaluating nursing care plans. 22. To have an understanding of transition at Post 16 level and support the College Nurse in preparing relevant medical reports for student who require an Education, Health and Care plan. 23. To use specialist nursing skills to make day-to-day decisions about changes in a student s health based on observations and information from the College Nurse, the student, parents/carers and other professionals. 24. To be familiar with and implement each student s handling profile. 25. To ensure knowledge of lifting and handling equipment is kept current and up to date. 26. To work alongside the College Nurse with students who have (a) multiple and severe disabilities, (b) challenging behaviour, (c) life limiting conditions. 27. To give emotional support to parents and carers, teaching and support staff in college, when required.
3 Accountability 28. To ensure the safe storage and administration of prescribed medicines in accordance with the Medicines in College Policy (2011). 29. To use resources responsibly and economically, reporting breakages and need for replacement to the College Nurse. 30. To assist the College Nurse in training college personnel in aspects of first aid and care relating to students in their care. Handling information and data 31. To aid the College Nurse in maintaining an up-to-date and accurate record system in college in a secure environment ensuring confidentiality 32. To work alongside the College Nurse in maintaining legible, accurate and contemporaneous records which are dated and signed 33. To participate in the collection of data for audit, research and management as requested by the Learning Support Manager. Health and Safety: 34. Person specification CRITERION ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE Qualifications Specialist Practitioner-School Nurse Learning Disability /Specialist Community Public Health qualification Nurse or Relevant experience of Registered Nurse Child branch working with Registered Nurse with relevant disabilities experience in Education Knowledge Knowledge and understanding of the Health Needs of disabled young people Understanding the needs of the families of disabled young people and those with life limiting conditions Understanding the needs of parents/carers of young people with disabilities and also of college staff who teach and support such young people. Safeguarding Skills Good communication skills, both verbal and written, particularly with young people. Able to work independently and within a team. Ability to work unsupervised and to plan own short and long-term work programme Ability to concentrate on and perform complex nursing skills with frequent interruptions Good organisational skills Negotiation skills Experience Experience of working with young people in a community setting Previous experience of working in education Minimum of 3 years nursing experience if RN or two years post registration experience if RSCN or RN Child Branch Previous experience of working in a Special School
