1 DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES SPANISH FIRST FORM COURSE OUTLINE INTRODUCTION

2 First Term Topic/Content Objectives 1. ALPHABET Students should be able to: Pronounce the Spanish alphabet. Spell words using the Spanish alphabet. Identify the difference between the Spanish alphabet and the English alphabet. 2. GREETING & RESPONDING Student should be able to: TO GREETINGS Goodbyes Read and transcribe simple Welcome dialogues including greetings and goodbyes for different times of day. Respond to common greetings appropriately. Greet and say goodbye appropriately in situations described in English. Greet and say goodbye in role-play situations. Use the different forms of welcome.

3 3. SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRIES IN NORTH AMERICA, SOUTH AMERICA` AND THE CARIBBEAN Students should be able to: Identify Spanish speaking countries and their capitals. Give the location of the Spanish speaking countries. 4. THE VERB LLAMARSE Students should be able to: Family Introduce self and others: me llamo Se llama Ask names using the questions: Cómo te llamas?, Cómo se llama? State names of immediate family members: Mi mamá se llama 5. THE DEFINITE AND THE INDEFINITE ARTICLES Classroom Items Students should be able to: Identify the definite and the indefinite articles in English and Spanish. Distinguish between the definite and indefinite articles in Spanish. Determine the gender of a noun in Spanish. List the classroom items in Spanish using both singular and plural.

4 Use the questions Qué es esto?, Qué son estos? to elicit information about the identity of classroom objects. NUMBERS Arithmetic Age Students should be able to: Count from zero to one hundred in Spanish. Write out and calculate sums in Spanish words. State age and the age of others in Spanish. Second Term 6. THE VERB SER Students should be able to: Adjectives Conjugate the verb ser in the present tense. Countries & Nationalities Identify self and others using the verb ser : Soy, Es Occupations Ask and answer simple questions orally and in writing to identify self and others by name: Quién es? Es Ana Ask and respond to questions with the verb ser relating to description, origin, nationality and occupation. Make simple sentences using the verb ser.

5 7. REGULAR ar, er & ir Students should be able to: Verbs Identify verbs in Spanish. Identify the endings for ar, er and ir verbs. Conjugate ar, er and ir verbs. Complete sentences using the correct form of the verbs in the present tense. Make simple sentence construction. Ask and answer questions affirmatively and negatively about daily activities. Transform affirmative sentences into negative sentences and vice versa.

6 Third Term 8. TIME Students should be able to: State orally the time shown on a clock. Write in words the time shown on a clock. Respond to yes/ no and either/or questions about time. Ask and answer questions about school (time of events and activities, timetable etc). Ask and respond to personalized questions about daily schedule. Illustrate the differences between a la(s) and es (son) la/las Ask and answer questions about radio and television programme schedules. 9. DAYS OF THE WEEK & Students should be able to : MONTHS OF THE YEAR Ask and respond to questions: Qué día es hoy (mañana)? Qué fecha es? Answer questions based on the calendar: Qué día es el veinticinco de octubre? Place the days of the week and months of the year in chronological order. Ask and answer questions about birthday (of self, family, friends).

7 10. THE VERB QUERER Students should be able to: Conjugate the verb querer in the present tense. Ask questions using the verb querer : Qué quieres?, Qué quieres ser?, Qué quieres hacer? Talk and write about fantasies (wishes) using the verb querer in the present tense. 11. THE VERB ESTAR Students should be able to: Conjugate the verb estar in the present tense. Tell the location of self and other classmates. Ask and answer questions about the location of objects and places. 12. POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES Students should be able to: Talk about personal possessions. Answer yes/no and either/or questions about personal possessions. Fill in the blanks with the correct form of Possessive Adjectives. Convert sentences containing Possessive Adjectives from singular to plural and vice versa. Construct simple sentences in Spanish using the Possessive adjectives.
