Often nonprofit organizations provide little or no training for new and/or existing board members. Since time and money are frequently scarce, board members often focus on the provision of services and related fundraising. The Center fills this gap by providing board member and officer training throughout Oregon. This involves practical training in legal, financial and leadership topics. Our training helps board members to better understand their roles and manage their organizations more effectively. Contact us at: PO Box S. 16 th Street Philomath, OR (541) Reminder: Early registration discount ends November 3rd
3 Agenda 9:00-9:50 Keynote: Leadership: Are We Slouching into Entertainment? Presented by John Frohnmayer, Lawyer, Author and Ethicist Getting attention does not equate with leadership any more than having a title automatically makes one a leader. Leadership has principles just like French or physics or football. Learning to be a leader might seem contrary to the democratic notion that leaders emerge from the citizenry, but successful leaders don't wing it: they learn how to govern honorably and well. John has some rough and tumble experience that he shares with humor and clarity. 10:00-10:45 Helping the Board Understand Their Duties, Kirk Harvey This session will explore the legal rights and duties of volunteer board members in Oregon. It will provide valuable advice on how presidents can support the growth of all board members in their organization. 10:45-11:30 Understanding Financial Information and an Introduction to Risk Management, Katherine DeYoung Although you may have a board treasurer to help, board presidents need to be very aware of the organization s financial basics. During this session we will explore key financial trends, what information you should be receiving, and how to approach the topic of risk management. 11:40-12:30 How Good Boards Make Great Decisions, Heidi Henry In this workshop you will learn about the three ways you can facilitate collaborative and robust decisions with your board. We will also cover polling methods, managing difficult discussions and when to vote. 12:30-1:30 Lunch and Networking - Lunch is included with your registration. 1:30-2:15 The Components of Long-Range Planning, Heidi Henry Although boards often work in the here and now, looking ahead is crucial. Long-range planning topics covered in this workshop include succession planning, board recruitment, and strategic planning. 2:15-4:00 Team Building is Relationship Building, Arty Trost As board president, a key part of your job is to create trusting, committed relationships with board members, officers, the Executive Director (if you have one), and funders. By the time this fast-paced session is over, you ll have a list of ideas on how to help your board build positive relationships - and create helpful momentum for your organization. Upcoming Events 12 th Annual Nonprofit Organization Board Training Saturday, January 23, 2016 Corvallis, Oregon
