2 What is capacity building? The ability of not-for-profit organizations to fulfill their missions in an effective and efficient manner. building capacity involves a continuum of interventions that assist nonprofits with basic functions (Alliance for Nonprofit Management) Capacity building has become a popular term. As the demands for services grow, needs are identified, new paradigms for exchange and interaction emerge; the nonprofit sector is continually challenged to devise ways to increase and strengthen their ability to adapt and meet mission. Nonprofit organizations that commit to building their management capacity will be the sustainable, high-performers in the field. Strong management translates into stronger mission performance. NICNE mission: To build a strong, vibrant nonprofit sector critical to a healthy community.
3 Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program Rockford College designed the Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program to support the changing demands on nonprofit leaders to enhance their management skills and operate more efficiently and effectively. This program offers courses essential to all nonprofit leaders in any type of organization. WHO SHOULD ATTEND The Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership will be valuable to: Nonprofit employees seeking to update and improve skills Nonprofit managers seeking leadership positions within their organizations Board members who wish to serve in a more strategic advisory role New nonprofit leaders seeking to gain a fresh set of concepts with which to guide their organization Individuals seeking to transfer from the for-profit to the nonprofit world PROGRAM OBJECTIVES The Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program will strengthen the participant s abilities in: Personal leadership Marketing Human resources Financial management Strategic thinking and planning PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS & EVALUATION Participants can elect to take a course or the certificate program (five courses). Participants may be given reading materials or assignments before the first meeting of each course and will be asked to use specific examples from their organization as the basis for weekly assignments and discussions. Courses are offered as four 2.5-hour sessions, with weekly assignments and discussions. Participants are expected to attend each of the four sessions of the course. Participants successfully completing all five courses will receive a certificate in nonprofit leadership. Certificate eligibility requires 90% overall attendance in the set of five courses.
4 Course descriptions LEADERSHIP: Nonprofit governance and executive leadership. Competent, ethical leadership determines the long-term success of nonprofit organizations. This course helps nonprofit executives evaluate and understand their leadership strengths, challenges and overall leadership capabilities. This course discusses various leadership principles including: Jim Collins Good to Great and Peter Senge s The Fifth Discipline. The course includes leadership styles, the roles of communication, trust in the leadership equation, ethical leadership behavior and governance principles that power exceptional boards. Each participant will complete an assessment of leadership in their organization and a personal leadership development plan. Thurs., Sept. 6, 13, 20, 27, 2012; 1:30 4:00 p.m.; Jeff Fahrenwald STRATEGIC THINKING & PLANNING: Establishing your path for success. Understand the fundamental drivers of your organization and rigorously challenge conventional thinking about them. This course will actively engage participants in thinking about core elements for defining a nonprofit s current situation and methods for designing a viable future direction. Participants will learn to apply planning principles to several aspects of nonprofit management with a focus on various planning methods, strategies for implementation and mechanisms to monitor and ensure progress. Thurs., Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, 2012; 1:30 4:00 p.m.; Angela Larson TREASURY: Financial management for the nonprofit sector. Participants will learn fundamental financial concepts and terms, basic elements of financial statements including the balance sheet, operating statement and cash flow, the accounting cycle and budgeting concepts. The course also covers the independent audit process, the significance of the new 990 form and recommended nonprofit best practices. Thurs., Nov. 1, 8, 15, 29, 2012; 1:30 4:00 p.m.; Jon Bates HR focus OPERATIONS: Managing your most valuable asset. Managing your most valuable asset. Human capital is the most valuable asset in any organization. Discussion on the importance of acknowledging staff as people more than just worker bees and defining the difference of a manager versus a leader is key to developing positive employee relations in any organization. To be successful, you must be able to attract and retain qualified staff. Participants will walk through the recruitment process with focus on creating accurate job descriptions, interview questions which uncover applicant competencies and behaviors, understanding the value of using personality assessments, how to complete reference checks and determining when credit/background checks and drug/alcohol screenings should be used. Discussion on performance management will include; how to prepare and set the stage for the formal evaluation process, how to coach and write-up poor performing employees up to and including termination without fear of liability. Participants will share in a review of common state and federal laws that employers are required to follow. Thurs., Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28, 2013; 1:30 4:00 p.m.; Sue Buckwalter ADVANCEMENT: Informing and persuading key constituencies. A pro-active marketing approach strengthens your organization s ability to engage donors, clients, media, volunteers, policy-makers and funders. This course will introduce skills and concepts that can be put immediately into practice to help nonprofit leaders effectively manage their organization s messages and programs in order to actively support both long term development and friend-raising. Elements of this course include: audience identification and message development, managing an on-line presence using social media to engage constituents, and developing relationships with customers, volunteers and donors in the context of several different fundraising models. 5 Instructors Jon Bates. Jon is Vice President of Finance and Administration for the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. He served previously as Vice President and General Manager of Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois. He has over 35 years of both for-profit and non-profit experience in executive and administrative leadership and has served on several non-profit boards. He is currently Treasurer for the Alliance of Illinois Community Foundations. Jon has a bachelor s degree in management from Concordia University. SUE BUCKWALTER. Sue is the founder and president of HR Concepts, Inc., a human resources consulting business. Her clients range from small to midsize in both the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. Prior to starting her consulting business in 2000, she worked for the former Warner Lambert and Rockford Health System. Sue understands the rewards and challenges of working for a not-for-profit as one of her earliest jobs out of college was fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Sue has a bachelor s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has over 25 years of experience and has been PHR certified since 1993 by the Society of HR Management. JEFFREY FAHRENWALD. Jeff teaches in the areas of management, leadership and operations at Rockford College. His active interest in training and management development has given him extensive experience in the business world. He serves or has served on over 15 nonprofit boards during his career and held leadership positions in 10 of these boards. Jeff has also helped over 15 other nonprofit organizations develop or improve planning. He has consulted with over 50 for-profit organizations in the areas of leadership, strategic planning, customer service, organizational development and human resource management. Jeff has worked in a nonprofit environment for over 20 years. He has also held senior management positions in for-profit organizations. Currently, Jeff is the Director of the MBA program at Rockford College. ANDREA GIBBS. Andrea has 25 years of product marketing and marketing communications experience in the manufacturing, service and nonprofit sectors. She has facilitated strategic planning for a wide variety of clients including the Alzheimer s Association of Chicago, Honeywell and Leeds and Northrup. More recently, as the marketing manager for Danaher Corporation, she managed the brand transition and roadmap from five brands of a multi-line, multi-product organization down to a single corporate brand. She has an MBA from American Graduate School of International Management, Glendale, Ariz., and a bachelor s in government/economics from Smith College, Northampton, Mass. Gibbs is a trainer and strategist with Act2 Strategists. ANGELA LARSON. Angela s experience in planning, marketing and communication covers several industries; including arts and culture, health care, agriculture and hospitality. Her strategic thinking, planning and communication skills have benefited nonprofit organizations such as SwedishAmerican Health System, Fortune 500 businesses such as McDonald s, and privately held companies such as Woods Equipment. As a business partner with Act2 Strategists, she facilitated planning activities with several Rockford-area organizations including ECOH, Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, YWCA and Chicago-Rockford International Airport. Angela was awarded a certificate in consumer marketing from Kellogg s Executive Management Program and earned a bachelor s degree in English from Illinois State University. She currently serves as Director of Marketing and Communications, Woods Equipment Company, Oregon, Illinois.
6 General information TUITION Tuition is $250 per course or $1250 for the entire certificate program (five courses). Tuition includes completion certificate and all instructional materials. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Access to information in a nonprofit organization that supports the course content will be beneficial (i.e., policies and procedures, financial data and strategic plans). REGISTRATION Mail the completed registration form and payment to: NICNE, Rockford College, 5050 E. State Street, Rockford, IL LOCATION All courses will be held in the newest Rockford College facility at 5100 E. State Street, Rockford, IL (located near the E. State Street entrance to Rockford College) WITHDRAWAL & CANCELLATION POLICY A full refund, less a one percent (1%) cancellation fee, will be granted to a registrant who notifies us about his or her cancellation at least five business days prior to the start of the course. After this date, no refund will be given unless the Northern Illinois Center for Nonprofit Excellence cancels the course. Registrants may apply the tuition to another course offered by NICNE if they contact us five days prior to the start of the course. Failure to attend a course does not entitle a registrant to a refund. Cancellations must be confirmed in writing by registrants. For additional information on our withdrawal and cancellation policy see CERTIFICATE COMPLETION Certificate eligibility requires 90% overall attendance in the set of five courses. MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA) CREDITS When the certificate program is completed, students may take an exam that relates to the material in the five courses.
