2 2nd Conference on Medical Issues in Cancer Patients & Survivors February 15-16, 2013 Focus This conference is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of clinicians who manage medical issues in cancer patients and survivors and clinical researchers interested in supportive care research in these patients. The conference will cover issues related to toxicity of cancer therapies, supportive care, symptom management, and quality of care. In addition, special sessions in three different areas will be offered: clinical management, nursing management, and clinical and health services research. A poster presentation is planned and participants are encouraged to submit their clinical research findings or case studies for consideration. Educational Objectives After attending the conference, participants should be able to identify unique medical conditions that occur in cancer patients and survivors (knowledge, competence); describe an appropriate workup and formulate a reasonable treatment plan for some of the common comorbid conditions that occur in cancer patients and survivors (knowledge, competence, performance, patient outcomes); describe some of the challenges that clinicians face when providing care to cancer patients and survivors (knowledge, competence); describe some of the important components necessary to the creation of a model for care of the cancer patient and survivor (knowledge, competence); describe optimal research methodology to measure and improve care for cancer patients (knowledge, competence). Target Audience The course should be of value to clinical faculty, physicians and trainees, clinical and health services researchers, research staff, nurses, mid-level providers, medical students, graduate students, and other health professionals involved in the care of cancer patients and survivors. Educational Methods Lectures Question-and-Answer Sessions Break-out Sessions Posters Evaluation A course evaluation form will provide participants with the opportunity to comment on the value of the program content to their practice decisions, performance improvement activities, or possible impact on patient health status. Participants will also have the opportunity to comment on any perceived commercial bias in the presentations as well as to identify future educational topics. Accreditation/Credit Designation PHYSICIANS is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. designates this live activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The presentation, Close Calls: Tools for Helping Cancer Patients Make Difficult Decisions, has been designated by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for 1.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility. RISK MANAGEMENT Participants who attend this conference will receive 1 Risk Management Education credit. CME CERTIFICATES AND ATTENDANCE VERIFICATION CERTIFICATES Certificates awarding AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM or certificates documenting attendance will be distributed to participants as they depart the conference. To obtain a CME certificate, physicians must submit a completed evaluation questionnaire and a CME Verification Form. Upon request, a record of attendance (certificate) will be provided on-site to other health care professionals for requesting credits in accordance with state nursing boards, specialty societies, or other professional associations.
