2 COURSE OVERVIEW EDUCATIONAL NEED AND PROGRAM GOAL: South Texas is leading the country in new and on-going cases of diabetes as evidenced through emergency room and hospital admissions and the clinical environment. It is crucial to continue looking for ways to prevent, manage and treat diabetes and all its complications. All health care professionals should stay up to date on the latest advances in this field in order to provide patients with better care and education. This two-day seminar will feature outstanding speakers covering a broad range of topics, including diabetes, treatments, wellness perspectives, and associated comorbidities. It will offer health care professionals the latest standards of care for diabetic patients. Attendees will be able to use this information in the medical management and prevention of complications for the patient with diabetes. NURSING PURPOSE STATEMENT: The purpose of this education activity is to enhance the knowledge of the latest standards of management of type 1&2 Diabetes of the Registered Nurse in the area of acute, critical and home care environments_ by addressing _ type 1 &2 diabetes with the pediatric and adults and their implications with managed care; the effect Diabetes has on Cardiovascular Disease; Diabetic Dyslipoprteinem; Fatty liver disease; Neuropathy; and managing Diabetes with menopause and Hormone Therapy in an effort to provide the latest standards of care for diabetics as evidenced by improved patient care and education of diabetic child or adult. TARGET AUDIENCE: This activity is designated for family practice, primary care, internal medicine, and interested subspecialty physicians, as well as pharmacists, physician assistants, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, dietitians, community health workers and other interested health care professionals. EDUCATIONAL METHODS: The format will consist of PowerPoint assisted lectures with integrated audience response questions, each followed by a brief question and answer session. 3 OVERVIEW ACCREDITATION STATEMENT(S): Physicians: The Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) Coastal Bend Health Education Center (CBHEC) is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. TAMHSC CBHEC designates this educational activity for a maximum of 15.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The presentation titled The Ethics of Patient-Centered Collaborative Care has been designated by TAMHSC CBHEC for 1.25 hours of education in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility. Family Physicians Application for credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. Pharmacists: The Texas A&M Health Science Center Coastal Bend Health Education Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The 11th Annual Diabetes Conference has been accredited for up to 15.0 contact hours of ACPE continuing pharmacy education. In order to receive continuing pharmacy education credit, participants must participate in the session(s) and complete a reporting form and program evaluation at the conclusion of the conference. This activity is knowledge based. Nurses: Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi College of Nursing and Health Sciences (TAMUCC CONHS) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. This activity provides up to 12.6 contact hours. Day 1 = 6.3; Day 2 = 6.3 Nurses must attend each session in its entirety and complete an evaluation of the overall program in order to receive a CNE certificate. Approval as a provider refers only to recognition of the continuing education activity and does not imply endorsement or approval of any commercial products by the TAMUCC CONHS, TAMHSC CBHEC or American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. Certified Diabetes Educators: To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification by continuing education for the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the NCBDE List of Approved Providers (ncbde.org). NCBDE does not approve continuing education. As an ACPE accredited provider, TAMHSC CBHEC is on the NCBDE List of Approved Providers. Certificates of Credit/Attendance: Certificates of Credit/Attendance will be provided based upon completion of the online evaluation. The online evaluation will be available from July 25-August 14, Certificates will not be provided to pharmacists. Instead, credit will be reported to CPE Monitor and pharmacists can log in to their NABP accounts to access the information about this activity. Overall Conference Objectives: Analyze clinical studies of new agents in the management of diabetes and evaluate therapy options Evaluate the role and impact of diabetes on heart disease and recognize strategies to improve patient outcomes Analyze current nutritional evidence and therapies specific for stable blood sugar outcomes for both type 1 & 2 diabetes Evaluate the different pathophysiology of T1DM and T2DM in adults and children Identify factors and processes related to fatty liver disease Indicate the gender differences relating to diabetes and evaluate outcomes in menopausal women Identify current and emerging therapies for managing diabetic neuropathy and examine the role of self-care techniques Investigate the ethics of patient centered collaborative care The Texas A&M Health Science Center Coastal Bend Health Education Center and conference planning committee reserve the right to cancel this conference in the event of unforeseen or extenuating circumstances.
