2 Course Description Leading researchers and practitioners will disseminate the latest advancements in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. This day-anda-half interaction will provide an intensive, practical and multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, nutrition management, gestational diabetes and obesity. Speakers will present a rational therapeutic approach based upon sound pathophysiologic principles. All treatment guidelines will be based on the standards of care for diabetic patients, as published by the American Diabetes Association. This course has been expressly designed for physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, nurses, social workers and other allied health professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge of diabetes care and treatment. Course Objectives Identify risk factors for the development of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and discuss the importance of early recognition List the key defects in the pathogenesis of Type 2 Diabetes Understand the limitations of the oral agents in the treatment of hyperglycemia in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Discuss practical aspects in the nutritional management of diabetes Review the basic mechanisms/factors involved in the development of NASH State the cardiovascular risk associated with diabetes State the current therapy for the treatment of dyslipidemia in people with diabetes Describe current strategies for the prevention and treatment of diabetic neuropathy Explain the etiology and treatment of T1DM Identify the main areas of clinical research interest in the field of diabetes and its complications Understand the major clinical research methods and techniques used to evaluate new therapies Discuss the role of the nurse in the management of the pregnant diabetic patient Discuss the role of the nurse and other allied health educators in educating patients about their risk factors

3 Accreditation Statement CME: The School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 12.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Dietetic: This program has been approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). CDR designates this education activity for a maximum of 11.5 CPEUs.
