2 purpose and goal This half day seminar is designed to provide health care professionals with an in-depth knowledge of asthmatic disorders, including regional prevalence, special populations management, treatments, patient education and disease management. target audience This program is designed for primary care and family practice physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists and other interested health care professionals. educational methods The format will consist of PowerPoint assisted lectures with integrated audience response questions, each followed by a brief question and answer session. accreditation statements physicians The Texas A&M Health Science Center (TAMHSC) Coastal Bend Health Education Center (CBHEC) is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians. TAMHSC CBHEC designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Interpret the pathophysiology of asthma as a basis for using pharmacological treatment within the Stepwise Model for asthma. 9:15 10:00 a.m. The Dual Diagnosis Patient with Overlapping Asthma and COPD David Miller, M.D., F.C.C.P. (UAN: L04-P) Outline the diagnostic standards for the overlapping, dual diagnosis patients. Examine the epidemiology and current global statistics for the overlap of asthma and COPD. Develop the rationales for needed evidence-based research translating treatment strategies into best practices for the dual diagnosis patient. 10:00 10:30 a.m. Brunch Break Visit the Exhibitors 10:30 11:30 a.m. Teaching the Patient with Asthma Carolyn Cannon, M.D., Ph.D. (UAN: L01-P) Construct an individualized plan of care for every patient. Explain proper use of prescribed therapies according to individual, patient-centered needs. Translate the meaning of Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) measurements into action statements for patients/parents. Justify the need for PEF readings and proper self-managment of asthma. 11:30 12:30 p.m. ETHICS: Community Control of Asthma Linda Gibson-Young, Ph.D., ARNP (UAN: L01-P) Encourage involvement of patients and caregivers and the healthcare community to help organize efforts to prevent, maximize control and encourage treatment for those who may have asthma or the overlapping asthma/copd problem. Educate stakeholders across the community and region about the potential of cooperative involvement in reducing asthma risk across the lifespan.
