2 Background The davinci robotic device has been available for nearly a decade. Urban, academic and tertiary referral centers have been advancing the use of the technology for both basic and specialized surgeries in cardiothoracic, general surgery, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, pediatric urology, and urology/urogynecology. Purpose This course is designed to be a primer on robotic surgery to fill the knowledge gap and enhance information to patients when referrals are designated. The intention is to increase minimally invasive surgical rates for patients in the region to improve outcomes. Learning Objectives The learning objectives associated with this course are as follows: Describe robotic technology; Understand current applications in urology, pedi-urology, general surgery, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, and cardiothoracic surgery; Discuss potential advantages to patient care as compared to open techniques of the same procedures; Discuss post-surgical management, side effects, and complications of robotic surgery in general; and Understand current limitations to robotic technology. Accreditation This live activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the, and Children s Hospital of Illinois. The is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
