BACKGROUND DCAD was develped in respnse t a request fr prpsals by Wilmingtn 2000 (nw Wilmingtn Renaissance Crpratin) and the City f Wilmingtn. The Cllege was funded thrugh a creative partnership f the Pratt Institute (Brklyn, NY) and the Crcran Cllege f Art and Design (Washingtn, DC). The partners brught a cmbined ttal f mre than 250 years experience in art and design t the establishment f DCAD and its curriculum. Opened September 1997, DCAD s main building is lcated in an histric Art Dec building built in 1932 that had served as the headquarters f Delmarva Pwer and Light. DCAD s first entering class had 50 full-time degree students; in Fall 2013, DCAD enrlled 97 new degree students wh jined 83 returning students, fr a ttal f 180 students. In May 2014, DCAD cnferred degrees n 63 students, 30% f which were minrity students. ACCREDITATION The Delaware Cllege f Art and Design is accredited by the Middle States Cmmissin n Higher Educatin (MSCHE) and the Natinal Assciatin f Schls f Art and Design (NASAD). 2 DEGREE PROGRAM DCAD ffers a tw-year Assciate f Fine Arts Degree prgram with majrs in six areas: Animatin, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Illustratin, Interir Design and Phtgraphy. As f Fall 2015, DCAD will ffer sixteen new areas f cncentratin, r tracks, within each majr: Animatin Fine Arts Graphic Design - 2D Animatin - Painting & Drawing - Advertising Design - 3D Animatin - Sculpture - Cmmunicatin Design - Printmaking Illustratin Interir Design Phtgraphy - Bk & Editrial Illustratin - Cmmercial Interir Design - Traditinal Phtgraphy - Sequential Art - Residential Interir Design - Alternative Phtgraphy - Cmic Art - Creative Cmmercial Phtgraphy - Phtjurnalism DCAD s Assciate f Fine Arts Degree Prgram emphasizes studi educatin in art and design cmbined with liberal arts curses. Of the students in the AFA Degree prgram, 38% cme frm Delaware, 50% cme frm Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and New Yrk, and 12% cme frm acrss the United States and abrad. Internatinal students have cme frm Japan, Kenya, Spain, Suth Krea, Pakistan, and Taiwan, amng ther cuntries. CONTINUING EDUCATION The Cntinuing Educatin prgram enrlls ver 350 students each year. The Cntinuing Educatin prgram at DCAD is dedicated t prviding the cmmunity with dynamic curses that fster persnal and prfessinal grwth in the fllwing areas: Web & Graphic Design, Fine Arts, Interir Design, Jewelry Design, Phtgraphy, and the Yung Artists Prgram fr high schl students. The Cntinuing Educatin prgram ffers certificates in Graphic Design, Interir Design, Phtgraphy, Web Design, and a Web & Graphic Design cmbined certificate. Wrkshps are held thrughut the year in cnjunctin with a variety f events, including DCAD s Family and Alumni Weekend. The summer Pre-Cllege Art Studi Prgram has been a successful highlight fr the past eight years. It is a week-lng, intensive prgram designed t prepare prtflis fr high schl students interested in pursuing a cllege degree in an art r design field. Students spend half f each day in drawing class and half the day in a chsen elective. Field trips and evening activities are als part f the prgram. In 2014, 53 students - the largest class yet - will participate in the prgram. Of the students wh participated in the prgram in 2013, eight will attend DCAD this fall. FINANCI AL AID DCAD s annual tuitin fr is $21,600, plus fees, and is a lwer rate than mst ther private art and design schls. On average, mre than 90% f DCAD s degree students receive financial aid. 3 DCAD s institutin-based financial aid is in the frm f a tuitin discunt. The Cllege attempts t make it pssible fr all students wh meet DCAD s admissins criteria t attend. Since pening in 1997, DCAD has returned mre than $8.8 millin in the frm f need and merit-based schlarships t mre than 1,700 students. In FY2014, DCAD awarded mre than $1.2 millin r 26% f its tuitin revenue in need and merit-based aid; a talented student in need can receive as much as $15,900 in institutinal aid, a tuitin discunt f 74%, and may qualify fr ther nn-institutinal financial supprt in grants and lans. H O U S ING & DINING DCAD is unique amng dwntwn Wilmingtn s educatinal institutins in prviding accessible, safe, and secure campus husing. In Fall 2012, DCAD pened new student husing at 707 N. King St. Rms have a studi/wrk space and a separate bedrm and bathrm. The Saville, lcated directly acrss street frm DCAD, creates a vibrant, rund-the-clck campus n the crner f Sixth and Market streets. At the start f the academic year, apprximately 130 students, r 73% f students, will live in DCAD-spnsred husing. A dining area, the 707 Café, is lcated n the first flr f the 707 N. King St. building. DCAD cntracts with CulinArt, Inc. t prvide the dining services fr students and special events. A meal plan is required fr all resident students, and cmmuters have the ptin f selecting a plan. Faculty and staff have access t the fd service n a pay-per-meal basis. The 707 N. King Street building als includes residential laundry, meeting, and lunge spaces, an ffice area fr the Resident Assistants, and a retail space n the first-flr f the Market Street side f the prperty. Jerry s Artarama, a full-service, prfessinal art supply stre, has ccupied this space since fall GRADUATES DCAD s curriculum is designed t prepare students t cntinue their educatin at a fur-year art and design cllege. Qualified graduates can cntinue at Pratt, the Crcran, University f the Arts, and ther art and design schls, entering as third-year students. Articulatin agreements guarantee acceptance f DCAD credits tward the BFA degree and third-year status. A minrity f students pt t enter the wrkfrce immediately upn graduatin frm DCAD. Apprximately 80% f DCAD s students cntinue their educatin at ther institutins t cmplete a baccalaureate degree. In additin t Pratt and the Crcran, DCAD students have successfully transferred t the Rhde Island Schl f Design, the Schl f the Chicag Institute f Art, the Califrnia Institute f the Arts, Mre Cllege f Art, the Maryland Institute Cllege f Art, University f the Arts, the Schl f Visual Arts, the San Francisc Art Institute, the Schl f the Museum Fine Arts, Bstn, the Ringling Cllege f Art, and the Savannah Cllege f Art and Design, t name a few. 4 GALLERY DCAD s Tni & Stuart B. Yung Gallery is pen t the public and features exhibitins f the wrk f DCAD students, faculty, and alumni, artists f prminence, and lcal artists and designers. Exhibitin penings are held cncurrent t the Wilmingtn Art Lp n the first Friday f each mnth. COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS DCAD is a highly visible participant in the cmmunity s cultural life, and either hsts r takes part in a variety f activities such as the Wilmingtn Art Lp, inwilmingtn Week, the Fringe Festival, and the Dwntwn Fall Festival. During the Fall 2012 semester, 927 hurs f cmmunity service were accumulated by DCAD students at area nn-prfits such as: the Delaware Museum f Natural Histry, Dwntwn Visins, the Creative Visin Factry and the Christina Cultural Arts Center. In 2012 and 2014, DCAD students created artwrk fr the jint exhibitin, Natural Attractin: Nature- Inspired Art, held at the Delaware Museum f Natural Histry. In cllabratin with DCAD s Develpment and Cmmunicatins Departments and featuring wrk f current students and alumni; the exhibitin is held biennially. DCAD s Design Incubatr ffers affrdable and pr bn design services t lcal nn-prfits such as the Grand Opera Huse, the Delaware Histrical Sciety, Delaware Breast Cancer Calitin, Histric Huses f Odessa, and the Delaware Slid Waste Authrity. The president f DCAD, Stuart Barn, currently serves: as the chairman f the Bard f Directrs f Main Street Wilmingtn, n the Executive Bard f Dwntwn Visins, as a cmmissiner n the City f Wilmingtn Design Review and Preservatin Cmmissin, n the Creative Arts District Steering Cmmittee, and is a member f the Wilmingtn Rtary Club. DCAD has initiated several successful cllabratins with rganizatins such as Wrld Cafe Live at the Queen, the Delaware Fundatin fr the Visual Arts, the Wilmingtn Renaissance Crpratin and mst recently, the Mid-Atlantic Wine + Fd Festival. DCAD partnered with Wilmingtn Renaissance in presenting Dwntwn Din Days in its inaugural event. A DCAD student, Elijah Stanfield (Class f 2002, Animatin) prvided the initial cncept and design fr Din Days. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DCAD was a featured case study in The Value f the Arts in the Life f Delaware, a summary reprt prepared by the Delaware Divisin f the Arts in William Wyer, frmer Managing Directr, Wilmingtn Renaissance Crpratin, said: the mre the art cllege grws, the mre critical mass we get dwntwn, and we realize the ecnmic benefits spillver int the lcal shps and restaurants. Since DCAD pened in 1997, tw vacant prperties acrss the street frm the Cllege have been redevelped: Kuumba Academy, a charter schl in a histric bank building designed by Frank Furness, and David Brmberg s fine vilin shp and residence. The Tatiana Cpeland Student Center, n the first flr f The Saville at Sixth and Market Streets, pened in Mrs. Cpeland s leadership has brught additinal supprt frm the crprate sectr, specifically The Buccini/Pllin Grup, whse in-kind services helped build ut the facility. In 2010, DCAD purchased the prperty at 602 N. Market St. in anticipatin f the Cllege s future grwth and expansin. In 2011, DCAD purchased the prperty at 707 N. King St. t meet the grwing needs fr student husing. In FY2014, DCAD paid nearly $2 millin in salaries t apprximately 60 emplyees (staff and faculty, fulland part-time), 80% f whm are Delaware residents. In FY2014, the DCAD perating budget tpped $5 millin. ALUMNI DCAD nw basts mre than 900 alumni. In June 2009, the first Alumni Exhibitin was held as a reunin fr frmer students. It was particularly special fr DCAD s first graduating class as it marked 10th anniversary f their graduatin. A secnd exhibitin and alumni reunin was held in June 2011 and a third in June DCAD alumni will again exhibit their wrk in the Tni & Stuart B. Yung Gallery in February DCAD alumni accmplishments: DCAD alumni have wrked fr cmpanies such as Structural Graphics in Essex, Cnnecticut; Urban Outfitters Studis in Philadelphia; Elle magazine in New Yrk City, New Yrk; FKM Advertising Agency in Hustn, Texas; and the D.C. Cmmissin n the Arts and Humanities in Washingtn, D.C., Pfizer, Pepsi, General Mills, Gatrade, Breyer s, FedEx, Merck, Bausch & Lmb, and Hess. Many have earned BFAs and gne n t earn MFAs frm institutins such as the Maryland Institute Cllege f Art (MICA), West Chester University, the University f Delaware, and Brklyn Cllege, CUNY. Animatin alumni have wrked fr the Cmedy Central Channel and Cartn Netwrk, and n shws such as Superjail, Wnder Pets, and Dra the Explrer vide games. Animatrs have wrked with BBC and Blue Airplane Prductins. They have als prduced wrk fr music vides by artists such as MGMT, Animal Cllective and Ke$ha. DCAD alumni have prduced publicatins fr Patuxent Publishing C. in Maryland, Pasadena Weekly in Pasadena, Califrnia, Spark Magazine in Wilmingtn, and The Delaware Cunty Magazine in Pennsylvania, amng thers. Their wrk has been published in The Bk f Alternative Phtgraphic Prcesses and Natinal Gegraphic Kids and been featured n The Cnan O Brien Shw and the Late Shw with Craig Fergusn. Many alumni have pened their wn studis, firms, and businesses. Other alumni have entered the teaching prfessin r have been able t change careers due t the breadth and depth f their DCAD educatin.
