3 The Legacy It was a time when President Thedre Rsevelt traveled t and frm his hme at Sagamre Hill in Oyster Bay t New Yrk City, Washingtn, D.C., and beynd by train; when magnificent steam lcmtives plied the rails and their meldius whistles eched thrugh the cuntryside. President Thedre Rsevelt. Thedre Rsevelt leaving Oyster Bay Statin when he was a Clnel with the Rugh Riders. The Oyster Bay Railrad Museum will transprt us back t a time when the railrad was Oyster Bay s link t the utside wrld, bringing the daily necessities and a means f cnnecting residents t New Yrk City and ther destinatins. It will demnstrate hw the grwth f the railrad directly affected the develpment and shaping f Lng Island as we knw it tday. Designed by the nted railrad architect and inventr f the skyscraper, Bradfrd Lee Gilbert, the Oyster Bay Railrad Statin was tuted as ne f the finest statins in the cuntry upn its cmpletin. Althugh the Oyster Bay Railrad Statin requires extensive repairs, nne f them will cmprmise the histric significance f the building and its ties t President Thedre Rsevelt and the lcal cmmunity. Let s restre this treasure t its riginal glry!

4 The Prject: Restre the Histric Landmark Statin t its Frmer Glry The Oyster Bay statin, built in 1889 and placed n the Natinal Register f Histric Places in 2005, will be restred and becme the permanent lcatin f the Oyster Bay Railrad Museum. The very same statin that President Thedre Rsevelt used t travel frm his hme, Sagamre Hill, t Washingtn, D.C., will nw hst families, schl children, and ther visitrs. The restratin prject enjys widespread cmmunity supprt. Nthing will be displaced, n prperty needs t be acquired r rezned, n sight lines will be altered, and parking will be prvided at an existing site. We will simply be restring and adapting an Oyster Bay landmark in a way that will prvide an imprtant educatinal, histrical, and family-friendly resurce t the hamlet and the regin. The restratin prcess itself will prvide lcal jbs and a sense f pride and accmplishment. The statin as it exists tday. 5 The New Exhibitins Gallery When cmpleted, the statin will feature an exhibitins gallery dedicated t simultaneusly educating and entertaining thrugh the accurate interpretatin f ur cllectin and exhibits in an interactive way. Whether a child r an adult has a passin fr railrading r is attracted t the technlgy that made railrading pssible, they will find a lasting cnnectin at the Oyster Bay Railrad Museum. 6 Why is this Imprtant Nw? The rehabilitatin f the Histric Landmark Statin will address specific initiatives that the Oyster Bay Railrad Museum has been advcating fr years. HISTORIC PRESERVATION: The Sciety fr the Preservatin f Lng Island Antiquities recently placed the building n its endangered list. Acting nw will prevent further deteriratin and restre the building t its circa 1900 appearance when Thedre Rsevelt was President. EDUCATION: The statin is clearly the vital element in fulfilling the fundamental missin f the Museum, which is t inspire students thrugh the explratin f railrad displays, exhibits, and artifacts in an histric learning envirnment. Develped cperatively by educatrs and Museum directrs, a new Educatin Prgram, when fully implemented, will prvide a significant number f schl grups a learning experience that satisfies specific New Yrk State Cre Standards. CONNECTING THE WATERFRONT TO THE DOWNTOWN: Nrthern Audrey Avenue will be dramatically enhanced and will extend t the renvated statin and plaza, prviding easy access t Thedre Rsevelt Memrial Park and the waterfrnt. FOSTER ECONOMIC GROWTH: As a family-friendly, reginal attractin, visitrs t the Museum will prvide an increased level f supprt fr the Hamlet s eating establishments, retail stres, businesses, and the many ther area histrical and cultural attractins. The Museum will cllect, preserve, and interpret the railrad heritage f Lng Island fr present and future generatins. Preserving the histric Oyster Bay Railrad Statin is paramunt in achieving that missin. The Museum currently has in its cllectin archives, histrical phtgraphs, dcuments, diaries, and a hst f ther bjects.
