5 INTRODUCTION The Natinal Cancer Registrars Assciatin s (NCRA) Cuncil n Certificatin initiated a Jb Analysis (JA) f cancer registry prfessinals in NCRA peridically cnducts a jb analysis t infrm the prcess f updating the test cntent utline fr the Certified Tumr Registrar (CTR ) examinatin. In additin t questins abut the essential perfrmance dmains and jb tasks f cancer registry prfessinals acrss the range f registry rles and settings, the 2012 jb analysis survey cntained questins abut the demgraphic characteristics f respndents, including educatin and incme, and the characteristics f their emplyers. NCRA used this data t cnduct further analyses f demgraphic and jb characteristics related t incme within the cancer registry wrkfrce. This reprt als cntains cmparisns t findings frm NCRA s 2006 wrkfrce analysis f the cancer registry field. 2 NCRA Salary Cnsideratins fr Cancer Registrars 1

6 Respndent Characteristics, Wrkplace, and Incme In NCRA s 2012 jb analysis survey, incme was reprted as either an hurly wage r annual salary. were als asked if they wrk full-time r part-time. They were nt asked t specify the average number f hurs they wrk. As a result, it was nt pssible t estimate annual wages fr hurly wrkers, and n direct cmparisns are made in this reprt between respndents wh earn hurly wages and thse wh earn salaries. Table 1 displays the mean hurly wage and annual salary fr respndents by jb title. These estimates d nt take int accunt the number f years respndents have served in their current psitins. On average, hurly mid-level management wrkers make 23 percent 3 mre than hurly cancer registrars and abstractrs, and hurly registry managers and directrs make 43 percent mre than hurly cancer registrars/abstractrs. 2 NCRA Salary Cnsideratins fr Cancer Registrars NCRA Salary Cnsideratins fr Cancer Registrars 3

7 Amng salaried wrkers, cancer registrars/abstractrs make an average f $50,599 annually, cmpared t $60,445 amng registry wrkers with supervisry r mid-level management titles, and $71,392 amng registry managers/directrs. On average, salaried mid-level management wrkers make 19 percent mre than salaried cancer registrars/abstractrs, and salaried registry managers and directrs make 41 percent mre than salaried cancer registrars/abstractrs. Table 2 displays the mean hurly wage and annual salary fr respndents by full-time (35 hurs r mre per week) r part-time (34 hurs r fewer per week) jb status. Amng salaried full-time wrkers, the mean annual salary is $62,655, cmpared t salaried part-time wrkers, whse mean annual salary is $43,000. These data shuld be viewed with cautin because the number f part-time wrkers wh respnded t the JA survey was relatively small. Table 3 displays the mean hurly wage and annual salary fr respndents by emplyer type. Amng all ther respndents emplyees f federal and state registries, freestanding cancer centers, cancer registry emplyment agencies and ther vendrs, and independent cntractrs hurly wrkers have mean wages f $24.82 and salaried wrkers make $59,794 annually. The estimates fr the nn-hspital categry shuld be interpreted with cautin because f the varius types f emplyers included in the categry. Figure 1 displays the mean hurly wage fr respndents by CTR credential status. Amng hurly CTRs, the mean hurly wage is $24.55, cmpared t $19.19 fr nn-ctrs a difference f 28 percent. Table 5 displays the mean hurly wage and annual salary fr respndents by number f years in the field. Amng wrkers wh have been in the field fr five r fewer years, the mean hurly wage is $19.50 and the mean annual salary is $53,299. In cmparisn t these wrkers, hurly wrkers wh have been in the field fr 11 t 20 years have a mean wage f $25.61, which is a difference f 31 percent. Salaried wrkers wh have been in the field fr 11 t 20 years have a mean salary f $61,251, which is 15 percent higher than thse wh have been in the field fr five r fewer years. Table 6 displays the mean hurly wage and annual salary fr respndents by regin. 9 Table 6 shws that n average, cancer registry wrkers in the Midwest and Suth/Suthwest have the lwest hurly wages at $21.50 and $21.71, respectively. The difference in these estimates is very small, hwever, and may nt be significant. Similarly, cancer registry wrkers in the Midwest have a mean annual salary f $63,031, while thse in the Nrtheast have a mean annual salary f $64,927, which is a small and perhaps nn-significant difference. Wrkers in the West have the highest mean hurly wage ($28.43) and annual salary ($69,620). Hurly wrkers in the West make 31 percent mre, and salaried wrkers in the West make 22 percent mre, than thse in the Suth/Suthwest. Cmparing the : 2012 Jb Analysis and 2005 Wrkfrce Analysis In 2005, NCRA cmmissined a cancer registry wrkfrce survey 5 as part f the first majr research prject n the cancer registry wrkfrce. The survey included detailed questins n earnings, including wages r salary, benefits, and average number f hurs wrked fr part-time wrkers. Althugh the 2012 jb analysis was nt intended as a fllw-up t the 2005 wrkfrce survey, a cmparisn f respndent characteristics suggests that the incme data cllected frm the tw surveys may be cmparable, thus permitting valid cmparisns f incme acrss the tw data sets. Table 7 displays the categrical age distributin f respndents t the 2012 jb analysis. Table 7: Age in 2012 Age Percent f 25 t t t t Ttal Lking at Table 7, the largest prprtin f respndents t the jb task analysis fell int the age categry 50 t 59. The 2012 survey cntains nly a categrical questin n respndent age, and unfrtunately, categrical age data is nt available frm the 2005 survey. Hwever, the mean age f respndents t the 2005 survey was 50, and the median age was 48, which suggests that respndents t the tw surveys are similar n age. 8 NCRA Salary Cnsideratins fr Cancer Registrars NCRA Salary Cnsideratins fr Cancer Registrars 9

10 Table 8 displays a cmparisn f gender between the 2012 and 2005 data sets. Cmparing these tw values reveals whether hurly wage and annual salary are keeping pace with inflatin. Estimates f the predicted (inflatin-based) changes in wages and salary between 2005 and 2012 are based n the Cnsumer Price Index, and were calculated using the Bureau f Labr Statistics Inflatin Calculatr. 6 Figure 3: Percent Change in Hurly Wage, Table 8 shws that respndent gender is very similar acrss the tw grups f survey respndents. $30 Grwth in Hurly Wage 2005 t 2012: Predicted versus Actual Increase Table 9 displays a cmparisn f highest degree earned between the 2012 and 2005 data sets. Taken tgether, the age, gender, and highest degree data frm the 2012 and 2005 surveys demnstrate that the tw grups f respndents have similar demgraphic characteristics, and that cmparisns f incme between these tw grups are valid. Hwever, the mean hurly wage in 2012 was actually $23.89, an increase f 22.5 percent 7. If annual salary had just kept pace with inflatin, the 2012 annual salary wuld have been $56,931, a 17.5 percent increase ver the seven years. Hwever, the mean annual salary in 2012 was actually $62,232, which is an increase f 29.7 percent. This finding suggests that, amng salaried cancer registry wrkers, there has been a real gain f 12.2 percent in incme ver a perid f seven years. Summary Analysis f the 2012 jb analysis data reveals large differences ( 15%) in hurly wages and annual salaries by bth individual and wrkplace characteristics. Factrs assciated with large differences in incme include: Jb Title Registry analysts, crdinatrs, and ther mid-level manage- ment wrkers make abut 19% (salaried) t 23% (hurly) mre than cancer registrars and abstractrs. CTR Status Registry managers and directrs make abut 41% (salaried) and 43% (hurly) mre than cancer registrars and abstractrs. CTRs make abut 28% (hurly) t 29% (salaried) mre than nn-ctrs. Years in the Field Wrkers wh have been in the cancer registry field fr 11 t 20 years make abut 15% (salaried) t 31% (hurly) mre than thse wh have been in the field fr five r fewer years. Regin f the Cuntry Wrkers in the Western regin make the highest hurly wage and annual salary. Hurly wrkers make abut 31% mre, and salaried wrkers make abut 22%, mre than thse in the Suth/Suthwest. The mean hurly wage increased 5 percent, and the mean annual salary increased 12.2 percent ver the rate f inflatin. These salary data frm tw different surveys shw interesting trends in wages and salaries ver time fr cancer registry wrkers. It wuld be useful t peridically cllect wage and salary infrmatin t track trends in the industry. 5 Susan A.
