4 AD Nursing Curse Schedules The AD nursing prgram admits students fall semester and spring semester f each year. Students accepted int the spring part-time prgram actually have an early start since 5 f the nursing credits are taken spring semester instead f the fall semester. 5 Admissin Prcedure A. Apply t Nrthland Cmmunity and Technical Cllege: If yu have never been a student at Nrthland Cmmunity and Technical Cllege, then yu must apply t Nrthland Cllege befre cmpleting the applicatin t the AD Mbility nursing prgram. B. Apply t the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram: Once a student has been accepted t the cllege, he/she can then apply as a candidate fr the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram. Applicatins must be received by February 28 t be cnsidered fr pririty admissin fr the fall full time prgram and by September 30 t be cnsidered fr pririty admissin t the spring part-time prgram. Students applying fr admissin t the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram are chsen cmpetitively. C. GPA Requirement: T be eligible fr the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram a student must have a ttal cumulative GPA f 2.5 r higher (this includes nt nly curses taken at NCTC but curses taken at all previus clleges as well). A student must be in gd academic standing which means the student has successfully cmpleted a minimum f 67% f cumulative attempted credits. Credits fr which a grade f W is received are cnsidered attempted credits but nt successfully cmpleted fr the purpse f mnitring satisfactry academic prgress. A W des nt impact GPA, but des negatively impact the cumulative cmpletin percentage. Students n academic prbatin r academic suspensin will nt be eligible fr the AD-Mbility Nursing Prgram. D. Current LPN Licensure: All students must maintain a current Practical Nursing license. New PN graduates that graduate the mnth prir t the start f the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram have 6 weeks frm the start f the semester t btain their licensure. All students must maintain a current practical nursing license frm either the United States r Canada thrughut the prgram. Shuld an LPN s license becme encumbered, suspended, r revked while enrlled in NCTC s nursing prgram, that student may be barred frm clinical nursing curses cntingent upn the nature f the encumbrance and NCTC s nursing resurces t supervise the student. E. Advanced IV Therapy: An Intravenus Therapy Curse dcumented n a transcript. PNSG 1232 Advanced IV Therapy (1 credit) OR A certificatin f cmpletin f an apprved state bard f nursing IV curse OR dcumentatin frm an emplyer that the student is cmpetent in IV technical skills. F. Current CPR certificatin: Prf f current CPR certificatin including infant, child, adult, ne persn, and tw persn CPR is required prir t all clinical curses. Accepted certificatins include CPR fr the Healthcare Prvider by the American Heart Assciatin OR CPR fr the Prfessinal Rescuer by the Red Crss. G. Backgrund Study: Cmpletin f the Minnesta Department f Human Services Licensing Divisin Backgrund Study and the Natinal Backgrund Study by Verified after acceptance t the prgram. 5

Health Screening Database: Students are required t prvide dates f current immunizatin against certain vaccine preventable diseases, and date and results f current tuberculsis (TB) screening n the Health Screening Frm befre the student is eligible t participate in clinical training, unless an exceptin applies. Requests fr exemptin frm these requirements are sent t the Administrative Assistant t the Vice President f Academic Affairs. I. AD Math Entrance Exam: Nursing students must pass a Nursing Applicatin Math Cmpetency exam by 80% prir t being accepted int the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram. Students wh d nt pass the math cmpetency exam will nt be eligible fr acceptance int the prgram. As a prgram, we understand hw vitally imprtant it is fr registered nurses t be able t perfrm critical thinking as it relates t administratin f medicatins. An extremely imprtant cmpnent f this prcess is accurately determining medicatin dsages. T assure safety t the clients, the student is required t pass an AD Math Entrance Exam befre applicatin t the prgram will be cnsidered. The student will register fr NURS 0002 AD Math Entrance Exam. If the registratin windw is clsed, the student may cntact the Nursing Department - Administrative Assistant n the EGF r the TRF campus t register fr NURS NURS 0002 AD Math Entrance Exam is 0 credits and $0 charge. Students may nly register fr the NURS 0002 AD Math Entrance Exam curse nce per year. The NURS 0002 AD Math Entrance Exam Curse will be available in D2L (Desire 2 Learn Infrmatin Management System) 24 hurs after registratin fr the curse is cmpleted. Students will have access t the curse fr 12 mnths frm the end f the term f registratin (Example: Fall 2010 curse will be pen until December 31, Example: Spring 2011 curse will be pen until May 31, 2012). The COURSE CONTENT in D2L will include the fllwing materials: A practice wrkbk, lectures, and pwer-pints. The Math Entrance Exam is accessed thrugh the D2L curse in a prctred envirnment. Exam schedules can be fund at the nursing website at The student is allwed three attempts per year t successfully pass the math entrance exam. Exam results are valid fr AD Mbility Nursing Prgram admissin fr 3 years. If a student is NOT successful after three attempts t pass the math entrance exam, the student has tw chices. 1. Take MATH 1003 Math Applicatins fr Nurses Curse (1 credit). The final exam fr this curse is the math entrance exam. 2. Try again ne year later. Register fr NURS 0002 AD Math Entrance Exam (0 credits) ne year later. Requirements fr taking AD Math Entrance Exam: N persnal items are allwed at the student s statin/table during testing. A pht ID must be presented t the prctr at the test site. A calculatr and scratch paper are permitted during the exam. Time limit t cmplete the exam is 2 hurs. Student must click the SAVE buttn after every test questin t ensure the test is being 6

7 prperly stred. The student will submit the exam electrnically. Results f examinatin will be prvided immediately upn submissin. Passing scre is 80% r 24/30. The Imprtance f Math Cntinues in the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram: Yur math entrance examinatin assures the Nursing Department that yu have a minimal level f nursing math knwledge t enter the prgram. Math will be reinfrced, hwever, thrughut ur prgram in NURS 2110 Health Assessment & Prfessinal Skills (yu will be required t determine drug dsages in a simulated test ut situatin). NURS 2125 Clinical I: The student will be required t pass a 10 pint prctred math exam with 100% accuracy t pass Clinical I (yu will have 3 attempts t pass). NURS 2135 Clinical II: The student will be required t pass a10 pint prctred math exam with 100% accuracy t pass Clinical II (yu will have 3 attempts t pass). III. Cmpetitive Admissin Prcedure Students applying fr admissin t the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram are chsen cmpetitively. Befre a student cmpletes the applicatin t the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram, the student must apply t be accepted as a student t Nrthland Cmmunity and Technical Cllege. Once a student has been accepted t the cllege, he/she can then apply as a candidate fr the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram itself. Students are chsen cmpetitively based n a passing scre n the AD Entrance Math Exam, grades previusly achieved in the required pre/c-requisite sciences and the number f cmpleted c-requisites taken prir t the selectin prcess. Research has shwn that success in prfessinal nursing prgrams is directly crrelated t GPA in the sciences. Table 1 shws hw the cmpetitive pint system is determined. The cut ff pint fr the selectin prcess is determined by the number f applicants and their pints achieved. It may be higher r lwer depending upn the applicant pl. Typical minimum pints required fr admissin is 13. If a tie ccurs, pririty selectin will be given t the candidates accrding t the date f cmpletin f the applicatin t the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram. Actual selectin t the AD Mbility Nursing Prgram is determined by a Selectin Cmmittee that cnsists f the AD Nursing Directr, a nursing faculty member, a faculty member frm the science department, and persnnel frm student service. The selectin cmmittee reviews each applicant and verifies the scres befre selectin is made. Applicatin deadline is September 30 th fr spring start, and February 28 th fr the fall start. Students will be ntified f acceptance r nn-acceptance int the prgram by Octber 31 st fr the spring start, and March 31 st fr the fall start. 7
