3 Welcome to Citylabs 1.0 Citylabs 1.0 is a 100,000 sq ft biomedical centre of excellence located in the heart of Manchester s Innovation District on the Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) campus, the largest clinical academic campus in Europe. A partnership development by Manchester Science Partnerships (MSP), Bruntwood, CMFT and Manchester City Council. Citylabs 1.0 comprises a beautiful Grade II listed building and new purpose built facilities for life science companies, joined by a stunning glass atrium. The unique partnership approach to its development, and location on the CMFT campus, means that companies based at Citylabs 1.0 have direct access to specialist clinical resources and expertise from researchers, clinicians and procuerment teams based within the hospitals. This enables a better understanding of patient and clinician needs and the ability to develop and trial new medical technologies in a clinical setting and grow your business. Citylabs 1.0 is one of the only developments of its kind in the UK, representing a stronger relationship between the NHS, scientific and academic communities and industry, alongside being strategically aligned with the NHS Innovation, Health and Wealth agenda. It also includes important industries related to healthcare, such as information communication technologies, digital and creative industries. University of Manchester Today the Corridor generates 3 billion, 20% of the city s GVA. 60,000 people work on the Corridor, 18% of the city s workforce. Citylabs m total capital investment 55% of the activity is in knowledge intensive sectors, significantly higher than the national (22%) and regional (21%) averages. The combination of GVA and knowledge intensive industries makes the Corridor the economic powerhouse of the city and it is expected to generate 20,000 jobs over the next decade. Citylabs 1.0 is located in the heart of this activity and the value of capital investments over the next ten years will be over 1.6 billion. 6 Plasma Screen Plasma Screen Plasma Screen Flexible Space Suites at Citylabs 1.0 are available in a range of configurations on each floor in order to cater for all user requests. A single floor plate of 20,000 sq ft at Citylabs 1.0, can easily accommodate a range of configurations to cater for all user requests. This space plan which demonstrates a mix of office and laboratory use, gives an indication of the scale of the space available within the building. The size of the floor plate provides sufficient space to enable a mix of office, administrative, lab and meeting space all on one floor. Most importantly it is entirely configurable to your needs. Customers can take whole floors or part and we can be flexible in how we accommodate the space and your needs. With an inhouse space planning team on hand, we are more than happy to help you with visualising alternate layout options to suit your bespoke requirements. Regardless of whether you want the minimum requirement of 750 sq ft or a full floorplate of around 20,000 sq ft, our space planners will work with you to develop a space that meets your needs and allows for future flexibility. The building has been designed to accommodate dedicated fume cupboard extraction for high specification laboratory fit out. The Grade A space accommodates mechanical ventilation, heating and cooling throughout the building so you have individual suite level control of your space. A BREEAM Excellent building design, the development makes every effort to use sustainable low energy systems that minimise running costs and carbon emissions. Shared facilities include a manned reception during office hours, on-site cafe, goods loading bay and access to an adjacent multi-storey car park. Alongside these facilities, Citylabs 1.0 boasts a number of conference and meeting spaces which are available to hire from one hour to full day sessions. Room configurations range from small meeting rooms seating 8 to a large conference space that seats up to 120, with a dedicated on-site events team. The North West s well established and fast growing biomedical sector includes a diverse range of internationally recognised specialist R&D and clinical research facilities. With its strong links to the clinical research base, The University of Manchester s excellence in basic and applied clinical research provides the region with world leading assets in biomedical science. The city draws on an incredible talent pool, with five universities located in the city region and twenty two universities within an hour of the centre. The University of Manchester is one of the largest and most accomplished in the world, with more than 5,000 biotech and medical graduates per year alone. 9 Health is our Business Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) is one of the UK s leading centres for translational research. It supports research in a diverse range of clinical areas and regularly recruits first global patients into studies. We believe that clinical research is most successfully translated into improved care for patients through the combined efforts of patients, clinicians, industry working in partnership. Greater Manchester is in the top three UK regions for delivering industry clinical studies. It is home to a large, diverse and stable patient population. Some 2.7 million people live in Greater Manchester with demographics representative of all major developed world disease areas, ethnic groups and areas of considerable deprivation. Over one million patients per year are cared for across our eight hospitals and community services. Companies looking to work closely with researchers will find Citylabs 1.0 to be the ideal location at the heart of the clinical-academic campus. We share our campus with our neighbour The University of Manchester. We work together to train healthcare professionals, many of our researchers hold joint appointments, and our research strategies are aligned. Our focus areas are: Musculoskeletal medicine Genomic medicine Women s and children s health Cardiovascular disease Hearing and deafness Eye disease The international quality of our translational research, innovation, education and clinical service is recognised through the Manchester s Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) accreditation The MAHSC partnership includes CMFT, The University of Manchester and five other NHS organisations. Together, we are one of only six AHSCs in the UK and the sole AHSC outside of the South East. The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) accreditations of our clinical research facility and musculoskeletal biomedical research unit, along with our appointment as host of the NIHR Clinical Research Network: Greater Manchester, are also indicative of the quality of our research. We are also home to the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine. Delivered in collaboration with The University of Manchester, this is one of the most comprehensive units in Europe offering an integrated academic and clinical service that is driving forward the precision medicine agenda. We provide an efficient and effective service that delivers on our customers needs to free them up to focus on their business. Nowhere is this trend more evident than in the new generation of health technology campuses, of which Citylabs 1.0 is one of the UK s first and foremost. These developments - built in conjunction with NHS organisations - and in some cases located within or next to clinical facilities - provide a nexus for more effective collaboration between the NHS and private sector innovators. 10 A central location The building s location on the Oxford Road Corridor provides ease of transition for staff as it sits on the main bus route in from the south of the city, easily accessible by car and benefits from excellent transport links. Manchester Airport, which has direct connections to over 220 destinations worldwide, is also only 20 minutes away by car. Parking is available within a multi-storey car park located next to Citylabs 1.0 on a ratio of one space per 400 sq ft. Alternative parking options are available across the hospital campus, within local NCP provision and beyond, should you require more space. High frequency bus routes go from the centre of Manchester to Oxford Road, stopping right next to Citylabs 1.0, and through to the residential areas south of the city. Manchester has two train stations, Piccadilly and Oxford Road, both served by buses or in walking distance for those who prefer to stroll through the city. London is only two hours away by train with direct services running every 20 minutes. Metrolink trams stop at St. Peter s Square, a 20 minute walk away from the site. Near to Citylabs 1.0 there are banks, a post office, small supermarkets and several food outlets can be found nearby. Oxford Road is well provisioned with an array of lunchtime and evening eateries, as well as bars, newsagents and a selection of supermarkets and coffee shops. There are numerous gyms and sporting facilities in the area that you can access, including the Manchester Aquatics Centre with its Olympic sized pool and varied fitness and wellbeing classes. Looking to take a client to dinner, shop for the perfect gift, see the latest play, band, art house film or blockbuster? Or simply wanting to unwind after a hard day s work? The Corridor is home to the city s leading museums, galleries and theatres, and is only a short bus ride or walk into the lively city centre where Manchester s vibrant art, culture, restaurant, music and social scene is waiting to be explored.
