2 Events and Seminars The UEA Exemplar Low Carbon Building Project was awarded 6.2m from the European Regional Development Fund in October As a condition of this funding, the Centre for the Built Environment will provide free business support. This support is delivered through a series of bespoke of CPD accredited seminars, webinars and other support showcasing the design, build and post-occupancy of the UEA Exemplar Low Carbon Building which is targeting BREEAM Outstanding and Passivhaus Certification. SMEs in the East of England are eligible for up to 12 hours support free of charge. 3 Consultancy Offering The Centre for the Built Environment provides consultancy services through its sister company, Adapt Commercial, a leading strategic carbon management and sustainability consultancy. Our work builds on the widely acknowledged successes of the University of East Anglia s academic work and business activities in the low carbon sector. With our ethos of client focus and innovation, we can offer low carbon consultancy services which span the whole building life cycle and supply chain including: Strategic low carbon design and procurement for new build and retrofit We have particular expertise in the fabric first approach to maximise energy saving, carbon reduction and cost-effectiveness, and can provide the following range of services: design pre-assessment and feasibility studies, energy, carbon and financial modelling and analysis of options evaluation and setting of sustainability targets for design and construction including BREEAM, Code for Sustainable Homes, LEED and Passivhaus as well as other bespoke metrics sustainable procurement, integrating low carbon metrics and targets within the tender process and construction contracts, and implementing Soft Landings through the construction stage evaluation of low and zero carbon energy technologies as part of a holistic building strategy strategic project delivery. Sustainable construction and supply chains We can help you identify and assess sustainable construction and thereby achieve significant whole life emission reductions, cost-effective sourcing and the potential development of supply chain partnerships and opportunities. For suppliers we can advise on and facilitate the testing and certification of sustainable construction in order to verify and enhance environmental credentials to specifiers and purchasers. This is of particular value in stimulating associated supply chains and market penetration of new and innovative. Specific services include: design option analysis and recommendations carbon footprinting and life cycle analysis, ranging in scope from specific and products to complete construction projects embodied carbon calculations and environmental product declarations. Post-occupancy operational monitoring We have extensive experience of developing and implementing post occupancy monitoring programmes, enabling clients to determine the actual performance of their buildings and in turn identify and implement improvements to existing developments, enhance occupier satisfaction and capture valuable feedback to inform future designs. Our services include the following: development of a data collection plan for energy, CO 2, behavioural and satisfaction monitoring implementation and management of data collection and evaluation development and implementation of action plans for maximising performance improvement implementation of the Soft Landings process. Planning policy and application support Working with local authorities and communities we can help to define sustainability criteria which are informed by the most current and innovative practice and which are most effective in achieving strategic priorities, including: advising on the formulation of sustainability policies and supplementary documents for Local Plans, Neighbourhood Plans and specific sites assisting planning officers with pre-application engagement with prospective applicants and evaluation of planning applications in relation to sustainability criteria. Working with applicants and their design teams, we can undertake sustainability option appraisals, pre-application engagement and preparation of sustainability and energy statements in support of planning applications. Grant funding and programme management We have extensive experience in writing applications for EU, TSB and other funding on behalf of organisations. Through the Adapt Low Carbon Group of companies we have successfully raised over 25m in funding to date, and can offer the following services: bid writing consortia and partner collaboration project management dissemination specialist consultancy input as a sub-contractor. Adaptation: climate change modelling for the built environment Currently, most design and modelling is based on static climate data. With London predicted to have the climate of Marseilles by 2080, decisions on design made now may have a significant impact on future heating, cooling and water strategies and the ability to adapt. Using UEA climate data we can offer the following: climate datasets for areas as small as 5km by 5km a range of climate data including rainfall, temperature, degree days and extreme events a range of scenarios up to 2080 modelling and advice on the impacts of such forecasts on the built environment.
4 Our Stakeholders The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is a seven-year investment programme part financed by the European Union. Its objective is towards low carbon economic growth in the East of England and million has been allocated to our region. The fund aims to help small and medium size enterprises respond to the challenges of climate change and the huge commercial potential behind a low carbon economy. Partners The Centre for the Built Environment is a partnership of UEA Estates and Building Division, BRE, InCrops, Fraunhofer IWM and Kingston University The UEA Estates and Building division overseas the development and maintenance of a wide variety of buildings on campus from the 16th Century Earlham Hall, the listed teaching wall building and landmark Ziggurats designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, to Norman Foster s Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts. It strives to make all new buildings visually enhance the campus and promote the principles of sustainable design, technology, and operation. The InCrops Enterprise Hub has been developed to stimulate through new business assistance and activity the commercialisation of new biorenewable and low carbon products. The team at InCrops was instrumental in assisting the UEA estates team in developing the renewable material and low embodied carbon agenda for the UEA Exemplar Low Carbon Building. InCrops owns the Renewable House at BRE and will be a key partner the Centre for the Built Environment. Fraunhofer IWM promotes and undertakes applied research within an international context that is of direct utility to private and public enterprises and of wide benefit to society. We characterise, simulate and evaluate the behaviour of, components and systems under the influence of external forces in different environments. Some of the latest renewable will be demonstrated in the UEA Exemplar Low Carbon Building. Kingston University consistently ranks among the top institutions for student applications and is a growing force in research. Developments in teaching, learning, research and facilities have all contributed to making Kingston University a diverse and adaptable institution at the heart of education and economic development in the region. With faculties spread across four campuses located in south-west London, the University boasts academic strengths in architecture, aeronautical engineering, forensic science, social sciences and surveying. Image: The UEA Exemplar Low Carbon Building, which will house the Centre for the Built Environment, has been granted 6.2m from the ERDF, giving the green light for the 3,000 sq meter project, set to open in Targeting BREEAM Outstanding and Passivhaus Certification, the Centre will demonstrate the latest sustainable solutions in architecture, local bio-based and advanced energy performance. It will support over 500 businesses and create over 250 green jobs in the local area, with small to medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurs expected to benefit most from the project.
