3 The overall aim for the project has remained constant: to create a World-Class Business School and Student Hub so that all our staff and students can enjoy working and learning in one of the finest and most environmentally sustainable academic buildings in the UK today. Welcome Since the initial planning was approved in 2007, it has been an exciting journey to create such a wonderful building for the University. Several thousand people have been involved in the planning, design, consultation, construction and fitting-out of this 75million building, too many to thank personally. The architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and main contractors, Sir Robert McAlpine, are to be congratulated on creating one of the best academic buildings in the UK. The Business School will be home to over 5,000 students, 500 staff and with the Student Hub at the heart of the development, our 38,000 students will be able to utilise the many student services provided within. We are immensely proud of this building and what it represents for us as a university and for all staff who will work here. 4 An Inspirational Learning and Teaching Environment Spacious 250-seater lecture theatres, a range of smaller lecture theatres, seminar and tutorial rooms equipped with the latest teaching and learning technologies and an extensive virtual learning environment provide outstanding facilities for staff, students and business clients. Informal study areas for students and researchers are available for use throughout the day and evening. Social spaces provide ideal venues for project meetings, fully-equipped areas are available for group working, and quiet zones provide individual work spaces.

5 MBA and Postgraduate Business Suite A dedicated study suite on the 7th floor for our postgraduate, doctoral and MBA students has its own range of lecture theatres and seminar rooms including a Harvard-style teaching area, along with social and touchdown spaces. The Sir Kenneth Green Library, adjacent to the Business School and Student Hub, has been winning awards for customer service since 2008 and provides access to a huge digital library of journals, e-books and research papers. Open around the clock during key times of the academic year it provides a comfortable and supportive study environment for undergraduates and postgraduates alike.

6 Opening Doors for our Graduates Our study programmes are distinctive for their strong links with business and many are accredited by the key professional bodies including ACCA, CMI, CIPD, CIPR and CIM. They include broad-based degrees in business and management and specialised disciplines to give each graduate a sound foundation upon which to build their careers as professionals and entrepreneurs. Many include a sandwich year business placement with opportunities to work in Europe or overseas for household brands, or study abroad in Australia, North America, China or Europe. Our extensive careers support ensures that there is a strong focus on employability and as a result 92%* of our business, marketing and management graduates go straight into employment or further study. Postgraduate taught courses and specialist qualifications are offered in full and part-time modes, including professional accounting stages and examinations, Masters in financial management, business management, leadership, human resource management, and more. Our full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Executive MBA programmes are accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). Business School accredited programmes of study are delivered across the world including North America, Singapore, Vietnam, Sweden and the Netherlands. 7 Our aim is to develop responsible managers and professionals, create sustainable competitive advantage for business organisations and use our applied research to lead the agenda for change. The University s new Business School location is a significant investment in our vision to be a leading modern business school that develops the next generation of successful entrepreneurs and business leaders.

8 Innovation for Business The Business School has built a considerable reputation by adapting to meet the needs of businesses in a fast-changing economy. In partnership with Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses we have delivered management training to help ambitious small businesses unlock their potential for growth and job creation. The Centre for Enterprise has worked with almost 1,000 business people, improving their leadership, innovation and entrepreneurial skills to support the drive for growth in the region. With the growth of the city of Manchester into the second largest financial and professional services centre outside London, the Business School was the first to create an academic qualification in partnership with the Institute of Financial Planning. We were the first to develop a full-time degree in Retail Marketing Management, now the fourth largest sector in the city s economy. We were the pioneers of both a degree and a Master s programme in Digital Marketing Communications; the ICT digital sector now employs 100,000 professionals in our region. A bespoke degree in Professional Studies in Taxation for HM Revenue and Customs is the latest employer-based training contract signed by the Business School following similar partnerships with the Bank of New York Mellon, PwC, Tesco and McDonald s. We established the University s successful business incubator Innospace responsible for nurturing more than 120 business startups and new enterprises. Keeping Good Company At Manchester Metropolitan University we offer a choice of professionally relevant courses in subject areas directly related to the needs of employers. In the Business School we are very proud of our professional associations, being a leading and innovative developer of these relationships in the sector. These help many of our graduates to start their professional career with the right skills and knowledge and start contributing to whatever organisation they join or establish.

9 Strength in Research Our Research Institute for Business and Management enjoys extensive links with academic institutions worldwide and has been recognised in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise for producing internationally excellent business and management research. We focus on enhancing the contribution of research to the practice of management and this is reflected in our particular research strengths in: Accounting and finance Digital business and management systems Human resource management and organisational behaviour Marketing and retail Strategy, entrepreneurship and international business Our large doctoral programme, which is fully recognised by the UK s Economic and Social Research Council and the European Doctoral Association for Management and Business, has 60 MPhil and PhD students.

10 Student Hub At the heart of the central learning zone atrium, the Student Hub provides large, open-plan, flexible spaces to create a welcoming social environment where students from across the University can meet, eat, study and access information. The Hub is the focal point for the University s advisory teams providing support, advice and specialist services to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and general information for prospective students and applicants. A team of staff are on hand for students who need specialist information, advice and guidance on: Employability and careers Financial and legal advice Health and wellbeing International student support Learning support Placements and internships Study skills Programme enquiries Student accommodation

11 Business Class Catering The Hub Café serving barista-style Fairtrade drinks and snacks and the Hub Kitchen hot food servery are open to students, staff and visitors throughout the week and also at weekends, creating the flexibility that students need to fit their studies around work and home life. Learning Zones Large drop-in IT and computer labs are equipped with the latest low energy PCs, and touchdown zones and laptop counters throughout the building allow students, staff and visitors quick access to a laptop or space to plug in their own mobile devices. Wi-Fi coverage is available throughout the building and extends into the park outside.

12 Leading on Environmental Sustainability Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the world and we believe we have a role to play in addressing the challenge. People and Planet already place us in the leading group of green universities and we are determined to do much more. The Business School and Student Hub are at the forefront of low carbon, low energy sustainable buildings and have been designed and built to exceed the BREEAM environmental assessment scheme s Excellent rating. We place environmental sustainability alongside graduate employability as one of our top priorities. 13 Low Carbon Technologies On-site renewable energy sources are key to our success in exceeding our energy targets for renewables and the design ensures that the building creates a thermally efficient and comfortable environment with the maximum amount of natural light throughout. Three boreholes provide natural, untreated water to heat and cool the building. The pioneering and unique cool slab chilled concrete cooling system was developed for use in the new building a first in the UK. Mechanical displacement ventilation with heat recovery provides an efficient form of natural air conditioning. Integral structural cooling and exposed thermal mass maintains a comfortable interior environment. A 922 metre square photovoltaic array on the large south-facing roof generates power for the building. Natural light is maximised for all spaces. Energy efficient lighting and LED technology are used throughout. The latest low energy PCs and IT infrastructure have been installed as standard. Rainwater harvesting reduces demands on the mains supply. Green roofs provide improved insulation, protection against the elements and an important habitat for birds and insects.
