3 Translating research into real-life Solutions Newcastle University plays a vital role in helping to translate academic research into real-life solutions. And as a core partner of Newcastle Science City, the partnership responsible for delivering Science Central, the University will have a presence on the development from Newcastle University is investing over 50m on Science Central, which includes a state-of-the-art urban sciences facility due to open in The building will span over 100,000 sq. ft. and will create a new home for its Institute for Sustainability where engineers, scientists and digital researchers will work together to discover solutions to the urban sustainability challenges we face. The building will house a number of groundbreaking projects including: The University s School of Computing Science: this will comprise an urban observatory and decision theatre which will allow real-time data from the city to be analysed and explored in order to improve understanding of the interaction between the city s energy, water, transport, waste and digital control systems. 2 million Energy Storage Test Bed: working with Siemens, a unique grid-connected energy storage test bed will be created, which could pave the way for the future of Smart Grids and low-carbon electricity throughout the UK. collected from sensors, people and computer applications.
