MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER CULTURAL SKILLS & CREATIVE ECONOMY This Marketing & Communications Manager leads on the development and delivery of marketing and communications for the Cultural Skills Unit (CSU) and Creative Economy (CE) team. The post-holder helps to achieve greater impact, profile and reach for the British Council s work through multiple channels, including the teams social media platforms and websites. They liaise closely with each of the teams Programme Managers and colleagues across the organisation to proactively create and promote content about our projects and programmes, and publicise new research to a UK audience. The Communications & Marketing Manager is also responsible for internal communications, working across the British Council to raise the visibility of both teams, communicate our impact and look for opportunities to collaborate with others. 1 Arts 143 PB6 Team Assistant CSU and CE I British Council

2 Role Information Role Pay Band Location Duration Reports to: Marketing & Communications Manager, Cultural Skills Unit & Creative Economy British Council Pay Band 7 UK Fixed term contract 2 years Senior Programme Managers, CSU & CE Role purpose The Marketing & Communications Manager is responsible for delivering the CE and CSU marketing and communications strategy to support and promote research, projects and events. They will maintain and develop strategic partnerships while demonstrating the value of CE and CSU work to internal and external stakeholders in the UK. Strategic Business Unit overview: The British Council was founded to create a friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and wider world by making a positive contribution to the countries we work with, and in doing so making a lasting difference to the UK s international standing, prosperity and security. The programmes we use to do this are wide-ranging and cover the arts, education, English, science and society. Our UK Arts team works with the British Council s global network of offices to achieve significant impact and change by finding new ways of connecting and seeing each other through the arts. Our team in the UK has three main groupings: We have six art form teams; three cross-disciplinary teams; and three country-specific teams in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our aim is to see stronger creative sectors across the world that are better connected with the UK. We believe arts and culture are vital to prosperous, secure societies, and that offering international cultural connections and experiences strengthens their resilience. We are uniquely able to make a difference thanks to our extensive and diverse networks in the UK and internationally, enabling us to respond to the individual context of each place we work in. Link to Vision on internet. The Cultural Skills Unit collaborates with colleagues across all three areas of the British Council: Arts; Education and Society; and English and Exams. In doing so, it aims to complement and fill gaps in the British Council s current skills provision, align areas of work and regional priorities and to cultivate joined up ways of working. The CSU draws on UK expertise in the area of cultural skills to co-invest in strategic partnerships across the full spectrum of the cultural sector. The CSU will position the British Council as a lead facilitator and convenor in the global provision of cultural skills by forming partnerships with institutions and governments globally. The CSU co-create innovative, evidence-based programmes and products which strengthen cultural relations through shared activity and mutual benefit. The Creative Economy team: using our unique network of resources, the British Council Creative Economy programme supports opportunities for individuals and organisations in the creative and cultural industries around the world. 3 three main areas that are important for both these industries and their contribution to wider society: o Building diverse networks and communities - working with and through hubs to support and profile their role in civic renewal and growth o Developing creative enterprise - celebrating creative entrepreneurship, building business capacity, debating and promoting new business models which adapt to the globalised and distribution of culture (through training and networks) o Understanding the impact of digital technology - developing digital thinking and showcasing innovation Working in partnership, we produce collaborative, multi-disciplinary projects including innovation labs, hacks, professional development and skills workshops as well as policy investigations. You can find recent examples here: Main opportunities/challenges for this role: Develop and deliver the CE and CSU marketing and communications strategy, across all channels, to communicate the impact of both teams work, raise the profile of the British Council and grow reach with a range of external stakeholders. Working with Arts communications colleagues, create and commission engaging multimedia content that demonstrates the impact of our work. Share insight on new and relevant social media platforms, offer advice on how best to use social media platforms within communications campaigns. Grow engagement with audiences online. Work closely with the CE and CSU Programme Managers, British Council Arts and Corporate Communications teams and external PR agencies (as necessary) to deliver effective communications plans around events, publications and projects. Ensure EDI (Equality Diversity and Inclusion) targets are included in as many of projects as possible. Main opportunities/challenges for this role: Communication and Marketing Ensure that communications are consistent and linked to the Vision for Arts and the aims of the British Council. Work with central Arts and corporate Marketing, Communications and Digital teams to ensure our work is aligned. 4 Regularly edit and distribute a newsletter, and work to grow its subscriber base. Support the teams on creating relevant materials for speaking opportunities. External Communications Manage online content, including commissioning and writing news stories and blogs, writing and publicising open calls. Effectively develop partnerships to promote our opportunities to a diverse group of professionals working in the creative, digital, education and cultural sectors. Responsible for identifying newsworthy stories about our work for British Council press office and external media. Use metrics to analyse the effectiveness of our social media and websites, and ensure our content is created to drive growth in our digital reach Develop and maintain a database of UK media and stakeholder contacts. Relationship & Stakeholder Management Develop good working relationships with British Council colleagues and in the international cultural skills sector Build professional networks and maintain an excellent understanding of relevant developments, stakeholders and opinion formers in the cultural skills sector Develop and maintain professional networks with key organisations and media who have interest in the key themes of creative economy work, including digital culture, innovation, and technology for social good. Risk & compliance Ensures projects and programmes are delivered in line with British Council quality standards and Project Management methodologies, including adherence to all process and procedures, governance requirements and communication procedures. Uses specialist experience to identify project and programme issues and potential solutions or improved ways of working to address them, escalating where necessary. Commercial, financial & resource management Using agreed British Council systems and processes, plans and manages the budget for a range of small/medium-sized projects and conducts monthly and year-end reporting. Leadership & management Plans and prioritises own work activities, and those of a wider project team/teams (many of which exist outside the direct management line and may be external to the British Council e.g. software developers, content producers), to ensure effective delivery of diverse responsibilities and projects. May be formal line manager to junior staff, temporary staff or interns. Provides coaching and mentoring for staff reporting to the role and/or staff in the project teams, as agreed to build capability and capacity within the team and ensure the team receives the support it requires. Supports the analysis of skills, identifies development needs and contributes to the development of learning and development initiatives from areas of own expertise. Shares knowledge, expertise and ideas to support senior managers and peers, identifying and/or developing ways in which the teams can make the most effective impact on the British Council s cultural relations. 4 Arts 143PB7 Marketing & Communications Manager CSU and CE I British Council
