With potential progression once in post to 39,685 a year. Terms and Conditions Administrative and Other Related Closing Date 8 June 2015 Job Summary Under the direction of the Head of Postgraduate Recruitment, this post will be responsible for the development and implementation of the postgraduate recruitment marketing and communications strategy, with the aim of increasing recruitment of high-calibre postgraduate taught and research students to the University of Birmingham. The post holder will be expected to further develop existing postgraduate recruitment activity, as well as advising and assisting University Schools in the development of their individual recruitment strategies. The post holder will work with colleagues across the Office of External Relations, the wider University and with key external agencies to ensure the provision of an efficient, responsive and professional information and advice from the first point of enquiry to the point of admissions to the University and beyond. We aim to provide applicants with accurate and accessible information to enable them to make an informed choice about their future. The post holder must be able to operate effectively and autonomously, and be capable of effectively managing large projects, budgets, and members of staff.

2 Main Duties Enhance our online communications strategy to enable the recruitment of high calibre postgraduate students to the University of Birmingham. To manage the content development, build, execution, and tracking of the University s entire PG pre-applicant and applicant communications plan using the University student CRM system including , VIP pages (customised student portals), chat, social media, and event management. Responsible for the Postgraduate section of the University website Develop a sector leading University Postgraduate Virtual Open Day platform that is tailored to the needs of prospective postgraduate applicants by offering a suite of interactive, discipline-focused online materials. To lead on the use of social media as tools for reaching potential and inprogress applicants, as well as exploring and exploiting the potential of applicant-management functionality and communications offered by our online application system. In liaison with the marketing team, shape and implement our postgraduate digital communications including the development of social media, management of key external online advertising channels for the promotion of postgraduate courses and funded studentships (including provision of accurate University and programme information in external directories and databases). Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of postgraduate markets, including other HEIs courses, marketing strategies and recruitment activity. Evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of PG recruitment activity To control and manage student data from all of your enquiry sources To ensure effective monitoring and evaluation of postgraduate market and recruitment activity, including student feedback and budget monitoring, to inform future planning. Track the progress against recruitment targets and use this information to inform subsequent strategies Undertake significant market analysis, analysing complex information, identifying patterns, gaps and conflicts in data impacting on PG recruitment goals Recommend key UK markets and academic programmes to be targeted by identifying and analysing internal and external recruitment trend data Act as a key point of contact for collaborative work with members of academic staff, members of the Marketing team (at University, college and school level), and other External Relations staff. Review and promote internal best practice in relation to recruitment activity in Colleges and collaborate with the Marketing and Communications Managers to develop a more consistent university-wide approach to marketing of PG programmes To build and manage effective internal relationships with College staff, advising on the development of school postgraduate recruitment strategies and implementation plans to support the achievement of student number targets. To build and manage effective relationships with key postgraduate market influencers, customers and contacts.

3 To work closely with colleagues across the University to plan pre-applicant and applicant promotional and communication campaigns that support the UK and EU postgraduate market and raise awareness of the University of Birmingham. To oversee implementation and monitor performance of the Student Recruitment team s activity in communicating with UK and International postgraduate offer-holders. Aid the Head of Postgraduate Recruitment in the design, development and delivery of the postgraduate print and digital advertising campaign and act as Design and Publication s key point of contact for this. Work with colleagues at other Russell Group institutions to develop and deliver a mutually beneficial series of recruitment events and activities. Build effective relationships with colleagues across the University in pursuit of postgraduate recruitment objectives, participating in committees, working groups and project teams as appropriate Act as a source of information and expert advice about postgraduate study: Represent the University at postgraduate recruitment fairs, careers conventions and other recruitment events in the UK, EU and overseas to promote postgraduate taught and research opportunities Maintain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of UK funding arrangements Give presentations at these events on a range of topics relevant to prospective postgraduate taught and research students. These might include: a guide to the University s admissions processes; the postgraduate funding offered by Birmingham; writing a research proposal; life as a postgraduate student Offer one-to-one advice to potential applicants about the entire range of postgraduate programmes offered at Birmingham and advising students on their suitability for admission in each case Co-ordinating and publicising information about University-wide funding opportunities, and providing funding advice to applicants and colleagues. Supporting the University s large-scale recruitment events, including the Postgraduate Open Days, the Russell Group Universities Roadshow, and FindAUniversity events. Actively manage the University s large, on-campus recruitment events and related projects, together with the staffing of, and budget for, these Develop advertising and communication campaigns to support UK recruitment by copy-writing and editing relevant and targeted pre-applicant and offer-holder communications, particularly those pertaining to the University s large-scale recruitment campaigns and activities Negotiate cooperation between institutions or organisations to ensure maximum benefit for UK recruitment, seeking approval from the University s Legal Office where necessary

4 Undertake regular benchmarking and evaluation activities Prepare detailed written reports following each recruitment event, assessing the merits of the activities undertaken and making recommendations, to both the Postgraduate Recruitment team and academic departments, about future activities, ensuring all recommendations are within agreed budgets Assume supervision responsibility for the Postgraduate Recruitment Advisor(s) where necessary Contribute to the coaching and development of Postgraduate Recruitment Advisor(s) Resolving day to day problems and reviewing performance as required Assisting in the recruitment, selection and induction of new staff as appropriate Manage the Advertising and Conversion Postgraduate Recruitment budgets: Providing accurate forecasts of the cost of all activities for consideration by the Head of Postgraduate Recruitment Monitoring ongoing expenditure to ensure that all activity is carried out within the agreed budget and making judgements on what new activity can be undertaken within the agreed budget Identifying and rectifying any potential deviations from the agreed budget quickly and effectively, notifying the Head of Postgraduate Recruitment of any major difficulties in this respect Providing outturn forecasts in preparation for year end and any other reports that the Head of Postgraduate Recruitment may request from time to time Person Specification Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience A good first degree or equivalent Proven and effective experience in a student recruitment, marketing, sales or external relations role Proven project management skills Customer relationship management skills Excellent communication skills written and oral Demonstrable problem solving skills when under pressure Creative thinker and self motivating, with the ability to use initiative An appreciation of current issues within Higher Education, especially those concerned with postgraduates, recruitment and admissions Evidence of marketing analysis skills and the ability to interpret data Willingness to travel (UK and Overseas)
