3 Paul E. Duckworth, President Norman S. Wright Duckworth Mechanical Equipment By Gilbert Nye, PE Paul Duckworth was interviewed on March 17, 2016 by the ASHRAE SJV Chapter Historian to document Paul s ASHRAE ac vi es. To be part of the ASHRAE organiza on, it is mandatory to be born. Paul was born on November 27, 1947 in Berkeley, California. At the age of one, the Duckworth family moved to San Leandro, California where Paul a ended elementary school and Pacific High School. During his sophomore year in high school the Ford Founda on did a study to promote interest in technology based educa on. Paul was in the first study group. The Technology interested Paul and a er gradua ng from high school he a ended City College of San Francisco (CCSF) where the HVAC engineering career was promoted. The curriculum at CCSF required Physical Educa on. Members of his Physical Educa on classes for both his junior college years included O.J. Simpson and Al Collins (OJ s lineman buddy and driver of the white Bronco). Paul enrolled in a dra ing class during the summer at CCSF. Also enrolled in the class was a young lady named Donna Taylor. Donna thought it would be a great opportunity to meet young men and she was right. It worked out pre y well as Paul and Donna have been married since Paul graduated with an Associate s of Science degree in 1967 and an interest in con nuing on the HVAC engineering educa on path. Paul found that Cal Poly SLO was one of two schools in the United States that offered HVAC engineering. So he headed off to the Central Coast. Paul joined ASHRAE as a student member while at Cal Poly ( ). In June of 1970, Paul graduated with a Bachelor s of Science in Environmental Engineering and was recruited by the Trane Company as a sales engineer. A er six months of training in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Paul was assigned to the Fresno, California office. Paul Duckworth CalPoly El Rodeo 1970 Paul and Donna arrived in Fresno in December On their first day, they a ended a joint Christmas party hosted by G.J. Yamas Company and Trane who had adjacent offices on L Street in downtown Fresno. Paul and Donna met many people in the Fresno HVAC industry which included Chapter Historian, Gilbert Nye. Paul was an integral part of the Fresno Trane office managed by Jerry Prui, and became a two me member of the Na onal Top 10 Trane Sales Club. Other Fresno Trane staff at the me included Rod Davidson, Sco Labotz, and Fred Ashiem. In the early 1970 s, Paul was asked to join the ASHRAE SJV Chapter Board. He proceeded through the chairs and served as Chapter President in He and Donna a ended the Chapter Regional Conference in May of 1978 in Sea le along with other Chapter Board members and their spouses, Sam Markarian, the Becker s, and the Nye s. In 1987, Paul was recruited by McQuay to represent their products in Central California and started Duckworth Environmental Services (DES) with a sales team that included Sco Labotz, Eric Dinneen, Paul Friedenbach, and Lee Erikson. 3
